Off all the RPGs I have played, the greatest boss battle in RPG history goes to..... Suikoden II's Luca Blight No silly transformations, just as well set up, exciting boss battle with one of, if not the most evil character in gaming history. He is also a very powerful warrior who can take on hundreds, as he is the bearer of the Beast Rune. He is the toughest boss battle in the game as well, although he is not the main antagonist or the final boss in the end. He is easier if you prepare, but a rude shock if you don't. A great boss battle starts with a great villian and Luca is a great one. He is no redeemable villian, he is the personification of pure evil. He rallies the populace of his kingdom for war by having his own men dress like a rival nation's and ATTACKS HIS OWN YOUTH BRIGADE. In the first five minutes you know how evil he is. He then goes on to slaughtering entire villages, doing most of the killing personally. He kills children, including Pohl, while laughing. He sacrifices the entire populace of the rival nations capital to his rune, making Kefka's massacre of Doma pale in comparision, and before he does this, he and his men cut down fleeing refugees seeking the border to an untaken kingdom. He has Jowy kill his own father (and king) at his half sisters wedding and becomes king and constantly abuses his half sister. He is so vile and evil, the other antagonist turn on him and help you get rid of him. And their betrayal of Luca Blight sets the boss fight up. The other antagonists tip off the protagonist side of an impending attack by Luca on their home base, allowing the Jowston Army to set the ambush. The battle comes to you instead of you coming to him. His entire column is killed by arrows, him struck multiple times...the first party lead by Flik attacks, he either beats them or he runs off, he is then attacked by Viktor's party, again he either fights them off or flees. Then its Riou's, the protagonist turn, in which his team has to win. In the boss battles, he gets THREE turns a round and has three moves, a column hit, a row hit, and a single triple hit on a character, add to the fact he is very good at counter attacking your party members and he is one tough cookie. After losing to Riou, he flees, and Riou has to kill some of his surviving troops while chasing after him. He then comes across an amulet full of fireflies, a trap to reveal his postion for archers. He then gest shot up, and still he is not done, and attacks Riou for a deadly and intense one of one duel. Only then does he finally fall, but not after laughing in telling Riou how evil he is and that it took hundreds to kill him while he killed thousands. And the game doesn't end, his legacy continues and so does the war. Incredibly well done boss battle that fits the story extremely well...proves you do not need to be an angelic figure with a five minute supernova attack to be great. Boss battle here.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H045qTJyds0&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUtArRUJyDM&feature=related

Necron - FF9, probably the best villian in the history ofRPG's....lol jkjk

For me it'd personally be the first Saren fight on Virmire in Mass Effect in terms of WRPG

And my favorite JRPG boss battle had to be Albedo in Xenosaga Episode 1.

Tower knight.

Animal-Mother

I loved the desing of Tower Knight but I took him down only using Soul Arrow from the top of the fortification, so I didnt think it was too epic battle. Flamelurker was the most formiddable foe for me in Demons Souls and it took me about 30 attempts before I managed to kill him.

Also, if Valkyria Chronicles counts, Batomys was very epic battle.

The two maneaters were just close to impossible. Flamelurker was tough. But as far as FF goes. Ruby and Emerald weapons. Omega weapon.

Especially if all your characters are level 100. Terrible. Shockwave pulsar was the bane of my existence. Luckily I had Holy's and holy war's

Ultimecia... that slag took me an entire day to pummel...Coyful

Probably the hardest RPG boss i have faced.

Anyway for me is:

Lavos - Chrono Trigger, the first JRPG i finished, it might not be that much today but the nostalgic value is huge for me, besides the music is really cool.

KefKa - FFVI, Even if the battle wasn't that hard, the battle felt pretty damn epic.

Sehirot - FFVII, Just like Kefka, the battle isn't that hard, but the summons and the magic made it very epic too.

Eternal Sonata Final Boss - It was kind of cool to see a boss like this one.

And that's all at the top of my head.

I never said Lavos was hard, but to this day is the most meaningful boss battle since is the one that introduce me to RPGs.

About the hardest boss, i was talking about Ultimecia.

Most likely the entire boss roster in Demon's Souls, sans the Flamelurker. That cretin wasted hours of my time.

I would agree with the person that said Red from Pokemon. The battle was just absolutley epic, and very tough.

Trainer Red was one of my favorites. Even though I have many favorites I did like fighting Culex on Super Mario RPG..

I enjoyed taking out Giovanni in Pokemon Red, in terms of difficulty (at the time) and feeling relieved to have all of the emblems.

In terms of theme, I like Saren (1st phase) and Darth Sion since words speed up the process of defeating them.

Atma Weapon from FFIII (SNES). I felt beastly after taking it down. :P 2nd goes to Seifer (FFVIII)... And for Pokemon, its gotta be the battle with N (B/W).

Gotta agree with the OP. Luca Blight. As if my avatar didn't give that way... And since I was mostly unprepared he kicked the crap out of me, a lot. It was great because you actually saw how strong he was without his transforming into a giant crustacean a la most JRPGs of the day. He was just a BAMF, and you knew it. Now I kinda want to play Suikoden II again. Also, Kefka is a close second. Love FFVI.

Game / Boss / Reason

Demon's Souls / Fool's Idol / Unique fight that was fun to figure out. Fought her twice in the same game, if you know what I mean..
Final Fantasy 7 / Ruby and Emerald Weapon / **%@**!*%!**##!
Final Fantasy 8 / Ultimecia / Just when I thought shes dead ...
Final Fantasy 10 / Mt. Gagazet Seymour / Only boss who ever gave me a game-over, for some reason
Final Fantasy 13 / Chapter 9 Barthandelus / First fight that tested my paradigms. Its great how many (including me) died the same way to Destrudo by playing defense
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess / Ganondorf / Amazing fight in so many ways
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Final Fight / Timing heaven
Paper Mario: TTYD / Pirate Boss / My badge setup shined in that fight
Pokemon Black/White / Elite Four + Final Boss / Beautifuly done for a Pokemon game
Resident Evil 4 (I consider this game part RPG!) / Salazar / Difficult and unique
Super Mario RPG / Axem Rangers / Don't think I need to explain!
Super Mario RPG / Jinx / Tough to beat the first time, yet so rewarding when you do!

demon's souls had some great ones. one that never gets mentioned is the very last one. [spoiler] hes so grotesque and pathetic. you could conceivably die, but its very unlikely if youve made it that far. i went in expecting some epic encounter and ended up pitying this slithering monstrosity with every swing of my sword. I really liked fighting Lynxwhen he switched bodies with Serge from Chrono Cross, Golbez was fun to fight too in Final Fantasy IV and fighting a boss or summon in Final Fantasy XII was great since the theme that played while you were in the battle.
