agh...age old debate. It makes more sense to compare specific series', designers, and story writers rather than Japanese vs Western. You have huge spectrums of quality on both sides.

Agreed, but if I would have to choose it would be Japanese.

apples and oranges, you'll leave empty handed from this debate. Everyone has their own opinion, and they're very different types of gameplay.

That's not true at all. Oblivion is a fantasy RPG, while JRPGs often have Sci Fi elements.

The greatest RPGs ever are Western: Planescape, BGII, and Fallout. But I think JRPGs are more consistent in quality.

JRPGs usually MIX scifi and fantasy elements. Personally, that's what ticks me off about the new Final Fantasy games.

Well, japan does make the deepest, best plot line, innovative, challenging RPGs/SRpGs/RTS's. I dunno, you tell me which is better? What western companies actually make RPG's, wait. If atlus is western , I might change my opinion. If not, meh

Western by a mile, Japanese fail to do anything new so often its unbeleiveable, and a good 80% of all JRPG's are just linear story-forced "RPGs" with little to no actual Role Playing (Or whats known as 3rd person Role Playing :P )

The West.

Morrowind, Fallout, Planescape: Torment, KOTOR, etc.

There really is no debate to be had here. :|

i dont know. WRPGS are to lord of the ring esque some times which is annoying.

but jrpgs are starting to get this whole metro look or in general dont get to far away from the cookiee cutter feel.

My favorite wrpgs are the ones that are more scifi or anything Bioware makes in general., and other games such as fallout, and planescape.

jrpgs i love the tales games, atlus rpgs, Final Fantasy and DQ.

I had a problem with each of those words when trying to say japanese devs over the western devs.

In terms of deeep and best plot. Planescape says hi. So does Kotor.

In terms of innovative Mass Effect says hi with its large scale, and dialogue system.

Challenging and funhow about Baldurs Gate 2, Marrowind, etc.

And as far as RTSs go thats entirely western dominateed unless Blizzard is a japenese company or something.

As for wrpg devs Bioware can run with the best Japan has to offer and ill say that proudly.

Exactly. Anyone who says JRPGs have the best storylines clearly hasn't played anything from BioWare or Black Isle.

Digital Devil Saga is very Sci-Fi... futuristic slum world made up of fragments of memory contained in the brain of a bored child in the real world whos purpose is to communicate with God and prevent him from corrupting the world with malignent data. The game and story owns any western RPG to date.

People act like western RPGs are more advanced.... when the hall crawler format is one of the oldest RPG formats in existance and ends up being hack and slash.

behold... better art design, music, and an insane level of difficulty not found in a western rpg.

Dude Lemmings and Hermits take up the majoirty of this board by far, just look at "favorite system" threads.

Anyway as one who've played both, JRPG's hands down.

lol I wont be trying again... check the ebay prices of this game vs any other game you think is good.Easily $80 used and only a few years old. Nobody is gonna pay $80 for a washed up overhyped game... most people cannot afford to play this game so im not really interest in the mass casuals who have never played the series... and I pretty much hate every other game on Playstation but clearly Atlus games are perfection. This is the huge difference between awful games like oblivion and clear classics.. If oblivion was a true classic, it would be worth something on the open market.

Depends on the style you want, I like both.

I play JRPGS when I feel like reading a book and I play WRPG when I feel like writing a book.

Chrono Trigger is undoubtedly the best RPG in video games.
