Best Sequels:

Resident Evil 2

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

Twisted Metal 2

Quake 2

(noteworthy mentions: not better than the original in every way possible, but still found ways to improve drastically)

Metal Gear Solid 2

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

Quake 3

Aliens vs. Predator 2

Half-Life 2

Deus Ex: Invisible War

Chrono Cross

--------------------------------------

Worst Sequels:

Doom 3

Final Fantasy X-2

Tony Hawk's Underground 2

Dino Crisis 3

-------------------------------------

Games That Need Sequels:

Red Faction 2

Aliens vs. Predator 2

Project IGI: I'm Going In

Chrono Cross

Xenogears (I'm not talking Xenosaga, either)

Parasite Eve 2

What are your opinions? Best sequels? Worst sequels? Games that need sequels?

Best:

PE2

RE4

Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

Worst:

Oblivion. It was great but sucked compared to Morrowind. Way less epic, and way less entertaining.

I didn't play much of Invisible War (I'm just won it on eBay...should get it in a week or so), but I thought it was pretty good. I suppose I was a bit quick to say it's noteworthy, since topping Deus Ex is a pretty tall order. I shouldn't have included it, but it wasn't by any means one of the worst sequels.

Freedom Fighters will not get a sequel...The guys who made it are the same that made Kane & Lynch arent they? Somehow I dont see great success for the game. Sad but true, people angry with Eidos are making the creators of Freedom F suffer.

IGI has a sequel? What is it? As for Doom 3, it was so hyped, but it just ended up being another dark corridor crawler. I remember thinking Doom 3 should be awesome, but it wound up being too generic and boring. Zone of Enders would be awesome. Also, I forgot to mention Mortal Kombat 2 and Street Fighter 2 were both awesome sequels. (edit) Also, Legend of the Dragoon needs a sequel badly.

I actually think it's quite a good game, but it's a poor sequel.

It's as though they took each feature of Deus Ex individually and said, "How can we make this worse?"

Best sequels: -Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters (Okay, so the original was more of a strategy game, whereas SC2 is more akin to Starflight and other space adventure and exploration games. Nevertheless, it still ended up being arguably the greatest game of all time.) -System Shock 2 (It has much of what made the original a great game, while having a MUCH better control scheme. And it's also arguably the greatest game of all time.) -Magic Carpet 2: The Netherworlds (The original just had you flying around and hoarding mana. This time, you have actual objectives within each level, and you also have underground levels, spells that level up into more potent versions, and a few additional spells. Yet another game that could be considered the greatest game of all time. Oh, and it had dynamically deformable terrain back in 1995 like the original-how come you don't see many games nowadays boasting such a feature?) -The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time (The first Zelda was okay, but Crystalis was superior. The second one...meh. ALttP really launched the series into greatness, and OoT secured it there.) Worst sequels: -Star Control 3 (I've only heard bad, bad things about this game, which is a shame given the greatness of the prequel.) -Deus Ex: Invisible War (Yet another game that falls well short of the astronomical expectations set for a sequel of one of the greatest games of all time.) -MechWarrior 4 (MW1 was good. MW2 and MW3 were great. But MW4? Ugh, what a pile of dumbed-down trash.) -Unreal Tournament 2003 (It wasn't exactly awful, but it seemed to be a bit too much of a rehash. And they cut out Assault! UT2004 is what UT2003 should have been in the first place.) -Doom 3 (I was hoping that this game would have followed the Doom Bible, which would have made for a somewhat interesting game. Nah-it was just another linear corridor shooter.) -Other various games I can't think of at the moment Games that need sequels: -Rocket Jockey (I'd hate to see such an original concept be abandoned. Dragging around people on a rocket bike never gets old!) -Magic Carpet 2 (Yes, I mentioned it again. They could keep the same basic gameplay, overhaul the graphics, and add online multiplayer, and they'd end up with a game that would still be better than most of the crap that gets released nowadays.) -Independence War 2 (Too few space "sims" make use of Newtonian physics nowadays. I want that to change-not necessarily for the ones with proper flight models to take over the market, but just balance it out so that we don't have so many of them with airplane-in-space physics. And, most of all, I want it to play like a space "sim" version of Starflight or Star Control II-it looks like a space "sim" at first glance, but the bulk of gameplay involves traveling around space, searching planets for minerals and artifacts, and either talking with or fighting any other sentients you encounter.) -Die by the Sword (It wasn't a particularly spectacular game, but VSIM was a neat feature that allowed you to control your character's arm directly with a mouse or joystick! Imagine that with the Wiimote...) -Panzer Dragoon Saga (I want to play this game so badly, or at least something like it. Hell, I'd settle for a remake of PDS itself that doesn't cost an arm and a leg!) -Steel Battalion (Not often do you see a game dev going balls-to-the-wall and freeing themselves of input device restrictions nowadays. I would have liked a new SB on the X360 or something that had a controller with more button-laden joysticks, as well as a single-player mode with a dynamic campaign. Online play would be a given, of course, so long as they ditch the crappy netcode and don't make it a seperate game like they did with Line of Contact.)

I'm kind of surprised to see a few people say Half-Life 2 is one of the best sequels evermade. I put it on my honorable mentions list, but Half-Life 2 didn't improve on Half-Life in every way possible. Quite frankly, I much prefered the original Half-Life to Half-Life 2. I'm not saying Half-Life 2 was bad (quite the contrary, Half-Life 2 was one of the best games I've played), but I enjoyed the original Half-Life more.

Also, I thought of another game that needs a sequel: Jade Empire. Anyone besides me want a Legend of the Dragoon sequel?

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (One of the best games evar, of course one of the best sequels)
System Shock 2
Pikmin 2 (Everything good about Pikmin times 2, and everything bad taken away)

Super Mario Bros. 3
Civilization III (One of the best TBS games ever made)

Worst Sequels:

Deus Ex: Invisible War
Unreal II: The Awakening
Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire
Metroid Prime 2 (Good game, but the backtracking is freaking painful)

Yes! Someone finally said Legend of the Dragoon. I've been waiting to hear it from someone. I'm terribly surprised it took so long. Due to sales and reviews, though, I doubt Sony has any desire to make a new Legend of the Dragoon. Despite a fanbase that thought Legend of the Dragoon was awesome, most review sites thought it sucked, and the sales weren't very good for the game. Too bad, really. It really was an excellent game.

Best sequel: Baldur's Gate 2.
1 was good, 2 was 10 times that, and a hundred times longer then any linear singleplayer game out there.
You do the math. :)

Worst sequel? Hmmm, Oblivion, but mostly because it isn't really much of a sequel.

Games that need a sequel: Monkey Island, perhaps? :) Jedi Knight too.

This thread really reminds me that I need to go back and play more MGS2.

Anyway, I can't think much of a best sequel, but Super Mario Galaxy's the best one I've played in a while.

Worst? This year, Guitar Hero: Rocks the 80s. Some of the songs are still fun, but it's wrong to charge $50 for only 30 songs, especially since I don't like a lot of them.
