Metroid. No iteration has been bad or below the standards of the other games in the series. They are all unique in their own special way and provide both a sense of similarity while offering new settings and interpretations of the gameplay.
Zelda or Final Fantasy... but considering Gamefaqs users voted Zelda as the best video game franchise of all time I say Zelda. Oh yeah, also because OoT is my favorite game :P
Final Fantasy. I like IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and X. XII wasn't so good in my opinion (semiautomatic battle system was not my thing), but that's a lot of games in one series that is great.
Other series are fallout, baldur's gate, zelda, MGS...
if its best series i'll say mario easy. nothing even compares to the legacy created. zelda would be second, but superb zelda only come out every 3+ years or so, while a superb mario game comes out atleast every other year.
Tough call. The greatest game ever isn't quite the greatest series ever, since SC1 was a strategy game, and SC3 was an abomination. Final Fantasy is consistent, has okay stories, and has excellent music, but the combat system SUCKS. (That's going by the pre-FFX titles, though I don't think that I'll like FFXII either from a combat standpoint.) Zelda is fun, but it's starting to get stale. Metal Gear is also enjoyable, but the later titles seriously need a more FPS-like control scheme. So, what do I consider the greatest series of all time? ...I can't decide. I still need to experience a few more series before I can nominate one. (For instance, I need to play Fallout 2, Freespace 2, both Baldur's Gate titles, both Independence War games, all of Ultima and Wizardry...and that's just the tip of the iceberg.)
Elder scrolls, Half-Life, Command and Conquer, Thief, Fallout, Buldurs gate, Diablo, Myst, Warcraft, Quake, Unreal, Wizadry, Doom, Civilisation, Total War, Tribes, SimCity, Jedi Knight, NOLF..... there is too many.
