Best Soundtrack in a game

Which game do you think has the best soundtrack?

For me, I think it's a tie between Halo and Half Life. The music is just so epic and memorable. And it totally fits the mood and setting of the game.

See, with GTA they usually just have well known songs in their soundtrack. I prefer soundtracks that are original and created for the game. That's not to say that GTA's soundtrack isn't good.

But if you play Half-Life 2 and both Episodes 1&2 you will see why HL2 has the better soundtrack (overall). Of course I feel that people think Halo's main theme and main battle there are outstanding, but to say the entire soundtrack is the best ever it just about insane.

The best of all time would go to a RPG. For me it's FF7, FF8, and FF10. Nobuo Uematsu obliterates any competition really. Crono Cross was amazing as well.

There's still love for old school tracks, it's just that some people have changed and evolved with the new. It's not a bad thing to like newer things. Don't be afraid of change.

It's not change I'm afraid of, but you do make a good point. Pleople are afraid of change. I LOVE alot of new work. I think it's younger audiences though or maybe new gamers...

Plus when was the last time an entire soundtrack, not just the main theme, stuck out to you and grabbed you're spirit? That is what games like Zelda:OoT FF7, FF8, and FF10 did for me.

Most of the FF games are very good ones.

Fable had a very good one. Danny Elfman Composed it.

Alone in the Dark is going to have a very good one. Its a compilation of Bulgarian Music and Folk songs from Bulgaria. Very good stuff.

outcast. u just cant go wrong with the moscow symphony orchestra. the MP3s are on the outcast website (which is still up amazingly) and is well worth a listen. definately one of the greatest soundtracks in a game ever (crackin game too...after the patches :P).

FF7 also has a great soundtrack that has stud the test of time well....and its all in midi format.

Galaxy has some great tunes also. im nto a huge fan of nintendos music (especially in mario games) but galaxy is very much an excpetion.

anything by jeremy soule also tends to be very good (supreme commander, guild wars, dungeon siege, prey, oblivion, morrowind and giants citizen kabuto amnong many others).

My first vote would be for Final Fantasy VI on the SNES, although Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and Zelda: LttP all have fantastic soundtracks on that system as well. As for more recent soundtracks that are excellent? Halo is great for an FPS, Gears for a shooter, and Smash Bros. Brawl is fantastic (although it's almost hard to include it, since it's essentially a compilation). One last one to mention: Castlevania: SotN. The soundtrack is extremely diverse, with lots of different music types, but the whole thing is amazing.

In terms of most atmospheric? Silent Hill 2 has to be close to the top of the list, if not #1. It's not the greatest soundtrack to listen to (although it is cool), but it works awesomely within the game.

Holy crap! I forgot Super Metroid, another classic, and a game right up there with Silent Hill 2 in terms of atmosphere. The Metroid Prime games are also excellent for this.
