Which one(s) would you pick to take the cake?

I think so far, Dead Space has scared me the most followed by the original Resident Evil the first time I played it.

I'd have to agree with Dead Space, then the first Condemned.

You're not the only one. It can get pretty intense. I really look forward to the rooms with the store and/or save point.

Dead Space actually puts both Survival and Horror. Resident Evil is actually neither at this point. It's a thriller action game. Only true Horror game has been Silent Hill and System Shock, and even those two are weaning off.

The Gamecube version is still one of my favorite games of all time (and I'm a PC gamer) but I think Dead Space did it perfectly. Even with its slightly repetitive enemies.

Left 4 Dead. A team of four people up against a massive, ever changing and *intelligent* zombie horde (thanks to the AI director) and with little more than what they can scrounge in terms of weapons. Not to mention the Witch... oh lord the Witch.

I'd say Dead Space.

Despite it's relative ease; it was quite scary. Great atmosphere and tension.

There is a major problem though... Resident Evil 4 is more of an action game than it is either "survival" or "horror." You trip over ammo, take down entire groups with single shotgun blasts and the only scares are creepy spike-covered dudes and a guy stuck in an oven.

I think the reason why the only survival horror game you ever thought was fun was Resident Evil 4 is because it isn't survival horror in the slightest.

I haven't played Dead Space, yet. But Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and Dino Crisis 2 take the crown! Alone In The Dark 4: The New Nightmare on PS1 was scary too. On PS3 the only horror game I bought was Silent Hill V and it was awesome aswell. Can't wait to get my hands on Dead Space.

It says a lot when the majority of people in this thread are just mentioning the action-horror titles...

My personal favourite survival-horror title is Silent Hill 2. It's tale of a broken man clinging on to the memory of his late wife is one of the most compelling plots, game or otherwise, that I've experienced.  It's a cerebal adventure that doesn't rely too much on combat, but rather on atmoshpere, puzzle solving and exploration.

Dead Space and Resi 4 are action games as much as survival horror.

Same goes for Doom 3 for that matter....

Resident Evil 2 to name one. The more you progressed in the game the more the tension had rised. It never gave you a big break outside of the save rooms and Capcom did an excellent job keeping the game's unsettling atmosphere consistent throughout the game. It's the RE game I'll never forget playing.

Probably Resident Evil Remake for the Cube. Not only was is one of the best games released at the time, but it is probably the best in the series, followed closely by Resident Evil 2.

Left 4 Dead is fun, but I don't think it's the gem of survival horror games.

This title will always go to the Resident Evil series because those are the only games that my Mother, my sister and my girlfriends would not allow me to play without them being present because they want to follow the story. It was like a scary movie that they could yell at and say run run run or shoot shoot shoot and I would do that.

I dont know, I played RE 4 on hard and I thought at the very least the Horror part was there and my GF would agree. Now on the hardest difficulty I felt it was pretty challenging, although there was plenty of ammo I would say you were tripping over it and it took alot more to kill the enemies. Not to mention some times it felt very overwhelming like when you were in the house and they were coming from everywhere in big groups. Or when one would pop up from your blind spot.

It is true you did alot more killing in this one then in the last but honestly thats not such a bad thing IMO. I guess the survival part was toned down alittle though.

Alright, people need to understand what a survival horror game is and what a horror game with action is. Left 4 Dead and Resident Evil 4 are NOT survival horror games. On another note Resident Evil remake for the GameCube was and always will be the best survival horror game ever.

I'll go with Dead Space. Sure it's shooty and not that hard but but I'd call it survival horror anyway.

In fact, it's not that different from any of the resident evils (yeah yeah, more 4 than the rest) apart from Isac being much easier to control and the fact that it's in 3d.

Huh? Resident Evil 4 not survival horror? I don't see that at all, it's stupid.

"Survival horror is a video game genre inspired by fictional horror films in which the players primary objective is to survive and or escape a threat typical of horror fiction. The survival horror genre is unique from other video game genres in that is is not generally defined by mechanics, but rather by theme, subject matter and design."

Seems to me like, Survive+Zombies=Survival horror

I'd vote Manhunt then Resident Evil 4

I think the game is scary and I think the atmosphere is genuinely creepy and gloomy, something RE is known for. It's a different kind of thrill: adrenaline-pumping action. But the game can make you jump when you're playing it in the dark, as with all RE games, and it IS a survival horror game. Just because it doesn't have the craptastic aiming system that made the RE series famous doesn't mean it's not part of the survival horror genre.

Penumbra Black Plague, System Shock 2 and Thief. Nothing else comes even close. Thief is not exactly "survival horror" but still is one of the scariest games ever made. Especially the fan missions. Third person games are IMO not scary at all. Also "horror" games where you have lots of weapons are unscary for me (like Doom 3, FEAR etc.)

That is why you fail. Try playing the game, you'll realize that it actually is a survival horror game. Again, just because you can actually fight back instead of only being able to aim at three different heights doesn't mean that the game falls out of the genre.

RE2 in its time was pretty good, i also like Silent Hill 3 a lot, dont know why, but  i found it really scary sometimes, but to me the price goes to Fatal Frame 2, towards the end of the game it gets pretty frightening. I havent play Stalker and Dead Space yet.

Right now I will go with Resident Evil Remake as the best survival horror game. I was scared pretty badly by this game when I first encountered Trevor, that thing just look unstoppable along with it disturbing appearance. I really don't know why, but there something about it that made me loved the game so much. I have yet to play Left 4 Dead so my opinion might change once I get the opportunity to play it.

I agree RE4 wasn't really thrilling, but gameplay wise it's superb, same with L4D.

Not to put you down but the whole witch deal is mostly hype, she's easy to kill. I feel more like running fast as hell when there's a Tank around instead, specially on expert
