topic, best war-type FPS franchise?! (you know..straight up realistic war!)
Feel free to debate!

Well I have Every Ghost Recon, MoH:AA and PA, Every BiA, and Every COD, from 1 to 3 (and UO), and every Battlefield.
IMO Battlefield.
1942 was like no other, Vietnam kicked ass, and 2 was ZOMG!!! 2142 is very good also.
Very close second is COD... Only no.1 and UO though. 2 and 3 arent that good.
And Ghost Recon kinda died at GRAW. Ghost Recon 1 on PC is still the best.
GRAW isn't really a first person shooter unless you switch it that way, or you play it on PC.
I say Battlefield. 2 is so much fun to play. I can waste entire paychecks at the Cyber Cafe just playing that for hours on end.

Since you've played em all, can you describe their strengths or something? :)
Damn MoH, BiA, CoD 4 coming soon...gona be crazy! But for some reason the new BF game coming out isn't on PC, only Xbox 360/PS3.

Well lets see.Ghost Recon - The original was a fantastic stealthy, realistic FPS, with awesome on the fly command, unlike R6's mission planning. Very very good game, and an awesome tactical shooter.
GRAW - Quite different to the original. Much more of a 'hollywood' style game. Loses all the realism, stealthyness and non linear gameplay in favour of tight action play (PC version more like the original. A good game, but is more or less a spinoff of GR like GR2 was... Not true to the original.
MoHAA - very fun tight linear FPS. Spurred the whole WW2 FPS crazy thing, after Castle Wolf 2. Very good game, pretty much like being in a hollywood movie. Only surpassed by COD1. Pacific Assault was also very good, abit more tactical and less frantic though.
COD - COD1 and United Offensive are the best run and gun, linear WW2 games. Seriously. These two PC orignals is what made the franchise. Seriosuly not even COD2 is as good as 1. Has some of the best sequences in any FPS (Stalingrad boat landing, and red square zomg!), and awesome multiplayer. I mean COD U had vehicles way before 3! ANd beleive it or not the devs Inifinity ward are EX Medal of Honour AA devs.
BiA - A pretty original idea - Tactical FPS in WW2, and it is very good. Drops the crazy linear seuqences of COD and MoH in favour of squad command. Slow paced, but very fun, if you want more depth in your gameplay. A great LAN co-op game - especiall BiA EiB.
Battlefield - Friggen awesome. Yes friggen awesome. BF1942, was like no other. 64 players, playing with mates on a team is like no other experience. Battleships duking it out, planes dogfighitng, tanks, jeeps, and infantry -it was all there. And all the experiences were unique.
BFV was quite good as is BF2142, but BF2 is where its curretntly at. Much more tactical, than any other BF, and a blast to play, but it is slightly less epic than 1942's batteships, carriers, masses of bombers planes, a tanks ect. Methinks next year a new PC exclusive BF will be announced. Bad Company does look quite good, but more of a barstard child of BF, not a true one.
others to mention:
Operation Flashpoint and ArmA. The mot REALISTIC AND HARCORE WAR GAMES EVER. Its more of a simulator than FPS. I LOVED OPF, and its still one of my most favourite games, and has some of the most intense gameplay ever. Also was one of the first FPS after Tribes 1 and 2 to features loads of vehicles. The Devs are ex military servicemen, and its used as a military training tool by e.g. USMC and Australian Defence Force.
Vietcong - While it wasent the most polished game the PC orignal was a very hardcore game, and deveivered probably the most authentic Vietnam war FPS experience.
There ya go, I hope that is decent :P
And yea all these upcomming games look awesome! Cant wait :)

Yea a few still do. Same with 1942. I recommend downloading the A.I mod, so even if there arent any online matches you can play against 64 very smart bots, or play Lan with mates, and include intelligent bots.Nobody better list the Tom Clancy series as realistic.
America's Army is the most realistic game I've played.
I would say that Desert Combat is still where it's at 8) After I tested the BF1942 mod Desert Combat, I was never able to go back to the vanilla version (nor to games like Counter-Strike) - best mod ever. Unlike BF2, there is no commander => you can actually flank without being spotted and also not get blown to pieces by point-and-click-artillery. Additionally, it has (IMHO) the best vehicles in any game (the helos are fantastic to fly) but also great balance between vehicles and infantry (unlike BF2).
For a game with a singleplayer campaign, my vote goes to Call of Duty 1 and United Offensive though.
OPF kept crasching so badly on my machine that the installation became corrupted. The fact that I finished the game after tens of such crasches is testament to how great the game was when it actually worked.

Well im not sure with BFV, as I havent played it in ages, so im not sure on the stiuation. The plus side is, its dirt cheap right now (I think you can get the redux edition with mods), and the A.i mod really helps, if there isnt any populated servers. Im sure there are a few ones, like every other PC MP FPS.If you want another good Nam game, Irecommend Vietcong 1. Get the patches though after you install, it and you will have the most authentic Vietnam War game to play :P That and BFV are defitnaly the best out of the bunch.
Both run on old PCs too :)

well if only installing mods was that easy (for me). See I completely f***** up morrowind by installing mods and now it's completely unplayable on my laptop. Also, how is STALKER? it's on the top of my most wanted PC games list.

Well with mods it all depends on what type. Some you might have to replace files, others its drag and drop, or most nowdays come with installers. As for STALKER its a fantastic game. I luv it! If you have played any FPS/RPG hypbrid games like Deus Ex or System Shock, you will kinda know what its like. The gameplay is fairly realstic, the guns are too, the factions and enimies are cool, the mutatats are AWESOME - some mutants in particular are bloody amazing - and scary as hell. The enviroment itself is like no other.... Its probably the best thing about the game. Anomalies are awesome too!
Its a very very immersive game, and great fun to explore, and always somthing interesting is happening in the game world - even if you dont follow the main sotry line (which you technically need to do to progress to different areas). Its defitanly one of my favourites this year, and one of the best games ive played.
The only problem is that its a big of a system hog, and prone to crashes here and there. If you buy it make sure you update it right away, and download the Float32 mod (it has an installer lol!).
If your used to console shooters, then STALKER is going to take some tim to get used too, but none of the less, buy it and give it a go. Its pretty much like no other FPS out there (even other FPS RPGs).
The only downside other than system req, is the multiplayer isnt much, and the community has dwindled. But the SP is where its at! Oh the Mod community is thriving. When the SDK is realeased some awesome mods will appear. Right now though there are tons of mods, hell you can even get drivable vehicles.

I recommend downloading the A.I mod, so even if there arent any online matches you can play against 64 very smart bots, or play Lan with mates, and include intelligent bots.nice, i've been looking for a good 'nam game. The only ones out suck (conflict vietnam, men of valor) So, would i have a good chance of getting into matches with a lot of people or is it very few people that play?
Weapon mods, please tell me there are weapon mods! I love the AK-47 and it's variants, which i saw were in the game, so that's another reason the game interested me. But if there are lots of weapons i can download then i will definitely installmods.

Oh yea you can modify weapons in the game! Its not that extensive, but you can attach scopes, grenade launchers ect., and you find internally modified weapons - e.g. AK with faster firerate. Weapons also behave realistically. They Jam, degrade over time, and the bullets bounce off particular surfaces. The weapons are also mostley European and WARSAW ones, so you can find some really unsual and sweet ones. Here is a site for Stalker mods!

Has a great community and loads of mods and addons.
Oh BTW I forgot to mention the A.i is also quite smart. They properly supress, flank, rush, and duck n' hide. The mutants and various factions also fight amoung one and other and migrate to different areas.

So how does it compate to FEAR's AI? Cause it was really good. Thanks for the site, I can't wait till october. You just made me want STALKER even more.

The A.I isnt as good as FEARS, but it its understandable as STALKERs deals with closed enviroments, and wide open spaces - while FEARS is closed enviroments. It is still quite good none of the less. My only problem is that they dont throw grenades. Its quite interseting when they pin you down: I was bunkered own in an abandonned grain processing joint at the start of the game, near a military checkpoint under a bridge, and the soldiers decided to pan out, and move from tree to tree as they advanced, waiting for me to reload. Eventually I ran out of pistol rounds, and they rushed the bottom floor, and waited for me to run, shooting me in the back. Animals like Dogs also attack if you enter their terriory, and if you kill most of the pack, they usually flee. Oh yea watch out for Spetnatz and guys in Exoskeleton suits. They are badasssss. Oh they also get smarter as your progress throught the game.
As for the weapon modifications, they arent as extensive as blood money's - which you can totally pimp your weapon, but you can still add bits an peices to your gun. Things like artifacts, you will really value and hoard.
Its also pretty cool being able to help out random guys along the way, and quite literraly make friends. I found one of the guys you meet at the start of the game Wolf - further into the Zone, he was wounded I gave him a hand, he gave me some info, and off he went. A day later I found his body near an abannondened farm - killed by bloodsuckers. I felt so sorry for the dude, I purged the farm of every damn bloodsucker, and dragged his boddy to a safe spot, so no more mutatnts could descritate his corpse lol. Hes body still remains there lol.
Oh yea if you like Zombies, then your going to find them in the game lol, it was a bit of a surprise to me when I played. Also be warey of these Telekentic Mutant guys. There are some that literraly mess with your mind - and cause you screen to warp, zoom in and out, and your speakers go nuts - gave me a damn headache. Also there are mutants which leivate objects and throw them at you. Also watch out for Bloodsuckers. Possibly one of the most scary monster in a video game.
Oh and those rat things too. I hate those things......... And also try lureing a mutant or bandit into a whirlygig anomaly. Nothing is cooler than watching them get swept up in a mini tornado then torn to shreds lol. I remember I pushed an enitre Bandit camp back into multiple whirlygigs with grenades. Lots of gibs. :D

Awesome, this sounds like a great game. Would you also suggest System Shock 2?
System shock 2 is an exellent game, but its visuals have aged very badly. There are some great mods out there to make the game look a load better though, and its dirt cheap nowdays. However with Bioshock comming out, I think going back to Shock 2 might be difficult if you had played that fist. It depends if you really want to try a classic.I highly recommend Deus Ex if you want a great FPS / RPG Hybrid. It is well recognised as one of the greatest games every made and rightly so - its friggen fantastic - and dirt cheap. However its visuals have aged bacly, but there are mods to fix it. Dont get DE2 invisible war though! BTW it may start a little slow after the first mission, but I gaurentee you, the game has more twists then every 24 season bundled together, and an awesome plot. Nearly every decision you make affects the outcome of the game... And you can play like you want to. Stealthy Ninja, Sniper, Harcore rocker dude - anything.
