Over the course of the console generation I haven't been able to finish Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas due to a game crashing bug that was never fixed. I've read multipe reports saying that this issue specifically deals with the game data file reaching a certain memory limit that onces hit, starts to freeze and eventually makes the game unplayable.

I am now reading the same for Skyrim and am unsure whether I should shell out 60 bucks for a broken product. At what point will video game reveiwers address this? It is literally a faulty product that becomes unplayable. Why hasn't this been addressed more by reveiwers? Where are the repercussions? Most products would either have a recall or a patch, why cant this bug be fixed?

Am I the only person that feels this way? For those playing Skyrim on PS3 now, are you experiencing similiar problems?

It's an unfortunate issue, and it's unknown as to whether it'll be fixed.

Fortunately, the 360 and PC versions do not suffer the same fate. That being said, some individuals are supposedly not suffering from it, but whether you want to base whether you spend your money on that, is up to you.

The point is though, that if every game on the ps3 hits that certain point in the game data file and freezes doesn't that make the product faulty? It'd be like selling a bike that falls apart once hitting a certain speed. It's unacceptable. Where was this addressed in any reviews? I'm sure it's amazing but when I buy a product that is stamped GAME OF THE YEAR and i cant finish the thing due to an inherent, unfixable bug, I either want my money back or an update fixing the issue.

It certainly makes that game faulty, sure.

TBH, i'm not sure why it wasn't addressed in reviews. Unless reviewers didn't hit the issue (which seems unlikely).

I believe Bethesda have pledged to fix this issue, whether they will remains to be seen :P

Is there any other game on the PS3 that has this issue? I don't know of any. I still don't get how nearly all of their games have the same problem on the PS3.

From what I have seen a read so far Skyrim on PS3 seems like a mess, so Im not getting it. I will get a new laptop in january so I will just get the PC version. Ive played it for a few hours on my brothers PC and it looks brilliant. The 360 version seems ok too, but PC version is miles ahead in terms of graphics and performance and I want to enjoy the best version of such a great game anyway.

It might just not be fixable. I can't think of any other reason why such a massive problem that seems to plague every PS3 version of their games would be allowed to continue on. Perhaps it has something to do with the game engine in that it's not built properly to work on the PS3's architecture (you can tell I'm no tech wiz, lol). Maybe the only fix would be to redesign the engine for PS3 which of course would never happen.

What is the limit of the save file. I might have something to do with the way the storage is allocated, and that a request to the OS might be needed to allocate more space needed for saved data. But when a Save is done, but the next one jumps too much for a request to be put in, or more than what the request asks for it might cause the problems. I am unsure. I haven't come across this issue.

It's pretty bad, my save file is at around 9500kb and it's starting to show in the gameplay, so I stopped playing until it gets a patch (hopefully) because I don't want to lose my progress, which is unfortunate because it's such an amazing game, one of the best games I've played this gen, if not throughout my 20+ years of gaming and I don't want to put it down but I feel like I have to. If your going to buy it, get it for PC or 360 if possible, otherwise I suggest waiting until the word is out that there's a fix and it does it's job. I can still play, I mean, it gets really laggy sometimes, but other times it runs great, but I feel its getting to the point where it might turn into a completely unplayable save file like others have had to deal with. Just look at the PS3 section on Bethesdas official forums, it's littered with complaints.

It's also been given a decent amount of attention from the media, gaming sites like kotaku have written an article on it, ex POM editor made a youtube video about it, IGN has a poll about it...so hopefully this time around Bethesda will actually do something to fix it unlike their previous PS3 ports.

This is my honest opinion without having played Skyrim on PS3: If we go back to the days of the Fallout 3 release, many were claiming that the PS3 had many problems and what not and didn't look nearly as good as the xbox and PC versions of the game. I had gotten the PC version, so I was not marred by any such issues. Later on, my brother decided to get the PS3 version and I managed to check it out for my self. The point? IT WAS THE SAME. Other than graphical differences between the PC and PS3 version, which should be clear as to WHY they are existent, the game was the same and it ran well from what I was able to deduce. In the end, asking "SYSTEM WARS" would not be the best place for an honest opinion as only few would share it. Additionally; a friend of mine actually platinum'ed Fallout 3 and he did not have any issues so maybe it's just a select few? :?

Had the problem on F:NV, not F3, not Oblivion. Here's hoping Skyrim won't either.

It's not a select few, and not having played the PS3 version of the game your opinion is invalid. You are the "In the end, asking "SYSTEM WARS" would not be the best place for an honest opinion"

TC, go to bethesdas official forums and you will see for yourself. I advise you not to but this game for PS3 just yet because it's so amazing that it will suck you in and you won't be able to put it down, but if you happen to be one of the select few as killy4lyfe states, then you'll regret your purchase.

That's very interesting. After skimming through a few of those websites, I am getting a ball-park figure of around 5-6 mb is where the lag starts to kick in. This is very interesting indeed. I can only wonder what Bethesda will do. PS3 does have a history with open-world games, specifically people calling out Bethesda as stated in my previous post, but I always thought they were exaggerating or just BS'ing but this seems like a real problem :(

Hey, I was just stating my previous experiences with Bethesda games, I have only played Skyrim for the PC, so yes, I would not know specifically about that one game. I was just giving my opinion about the exaggeration of things about Fallout 3 were when it came out and my own personal experience with it. It was an estimated guess, and if this problem is as big as it seems, then I'll admit my guess was wrong :?

Wow that is really crappy. They should have marked down the ps3 version if it's so serious it can't be patched. I was worried about my laptops ability to play this well but I guess I should take my chances. I remember when console games were the ones you didn't have to worry about. How far they have fallen

I didn't have any issues for a while and thought things were being exaggerated but I've started to have a lot of problems lately. The snow is really glitchy and framerate is been really bad.

I get if a game is good and you enjoy with glitches and all, but to give this game a 9 is preposterous.

The problems real, but I think it's a lot worse with Skyrim than it was with previous titles, those had lag, this one just becomes unplayable, it turns into a slideshow, actions like openinga door no longer work, interacting with someone doesn't work, etc. It's unfortunate because the game is hands down game of the year material when it works.

...and sorry for being kind of an ass earlier, being one of the players thats affected, it's been pretty annoying reading people saying how everyone is justexaggerating...but in all honesty I think those are the casual players who haven't reached that far into the game yet where their file size will get that big....when I was at 6,7000kb it was still fine and I thought I was one of the players in the clear, but the longer I played the worse it got as my file size got bigger.

The funny thing is, a lot of people have suggested temporary fixed like turning autosave off, disabling everything thats running in the background in the XMB, and a few others, and they do help, but they don't solve the problem because after a while the file size just keeps growing and the problems come back.

I'm about 8 hours in, and the only issue that I have is the game freeze for 2 second everytime I give the first attack a monster or someone in a new area. Also the game froze in the first 5 min in a cutscene of all places ( worked 1 min after, for my cuz, he had to restart his ps3. Other than texture dissapering ( that happen the first time I played the game, never happen after) the game run smoothly

It's going to get a lot worse. At about 13hrs for me (about 6500kb) framerate started dipping and there were more glitches. Some quests don't trigger and the snow for me gets really glitchy. And from there it just gets worse.

I'm not, and I'm kicking myself for not getting it for the 360. But games and issues like this is why I hate buying games on release or pre-ordering, these days some get released so broken it's a shame...and it's funny because when you look at skyrim ads, it ends with available now on xbox 360, look at bethesdas PR twitter, he's wearing a xbox shirt, lol...makes me think they'll never fix it so more people go out and buy it on the 360. Maybe they get a bigger cut from the 360 versions, or maybe I'm just paranoid, lol.

I'm not worried about that, I have the PC version myself. Can't stand the controls or graphics on the consoles.

yep, exactly. what is bothering me the most about hearing the same issues occurring in Skyrim is the new revamped engine. Rather than fix a game breaking bug they focused their attention on the graphical aspects. It's ridiculous to think the team is completely unaware of this issue. ive heard the 360 having issues and the PC crashing often, I think that's tolerable, considering at the least you can finish it. As for PS3 owners, it's literally a broken product.

The ps3 problems I have seen are !freezing! and a ton of bugs. Like sometimes when you mine ore, the game will start to let you pick axe it, then stop and you get no ore. I have seen people fly over my head to get to the location that they were supposed to be. When the "kill hit" happens it looks terrible, and not fluid. One "kill hit" just looks stupid too, the one where your character just picks up a wolf and just hits it. It's retarded. When you are switching from a bow or magic to a one handed weapon, there is a long pause before he/she actually pulls out the weapon. Sometimes the game wont let you go into 3rd person view. Sometimes when you dual cast at the same time it doesnt dual cast right. Sometimes there are missing people when the person is supposed to be there. Sometimes the game loads the landscapes really slow and trees arent planted in the ground, you cant open doors to forts, and you can walk through fort walls. Iv'e seen enemies pop in from no where. The longer you play the game, the more the game will glitch out. I've seen landscapes lose their color and just turn to a light blue color. I've noticed the higher your characters level is more glitches will happen, and will happen more frequently. And sometimes it's like the game lags when it loads its landscapes & buildings causing laggy gameplay where your character stops then walks, stops then walks. I've noticed more bugs but can't think of them right now.

And on a side note, the "final kill hit" when fighting with weapons was a very good idea. But, they really need to polish them up. They look very sloppy and sometimes you dont even know how your character killed the enemy.

TruestGamer

I can confirm this especially for skyrim it becomes unplayable, my save file was south of 15mb with about 60 hours of play and I couldn"t play for more than an hour at a time, I was lucky I was able to trade it in for The Xbox version and I also aquired the Pc version from a friend who had the steam copy and physical copy

Its very difficault to notice because it slowy gets worse I played for a good 50 hours before I started noticing anything was wrong and after that it gets worse so maybe the reviewers did play long enough to notice. A ps3 reviewer just recently encountered the bug

I hope they fix this. I'm growing quite fond of the game and it's going to really suck if I can't finish it.

edit: okay nm, just read the link above

i read somewhere that if you stop playing and reset the console once in a while that solves the worst of it. So, playing for hours straight causes the issue somehow. I'm skeptical of that because if it's anything like New Vegas it can crash after just 15 minutes

  1. Fallout 3 after some point would endlessly crash on me. Usually right after i beat the main game and the DLC allowed me to walk around the world still. That's when it would constantly crash.
  2. Fallout : New Vegas later in the game started to ceasely crashed but for some reason i persisted. I even managed to platinum the game BEFORE they gave out the patches. I've downloaded the DLC but i have yet to try it out. and i haven't played the game since they've given out the big patches.
  3. Skyrim i have not gotten far enough into the game for me to see any issues yet. and Oblivion never got far enough either because i just got bored with the world.

I know it'll cause some people to rage on this forum but i found Oblivion (not Skyrim - so far from what i've sen my friends play) to be the quintessential game-definition of GENERIC fantasy. I mean people rave about how awesome it is, the mechanics work sure, but i don't feel invested, i feel like i'm looking at a very plain picture of a fantasy world. Nothing interesting about it. Games that have broken mechanics but had some interesting twist were more fun then Oblivion.

Dragon Age : Origins was the first traditional Western fantasy game that i really liked in a long time. Skyrim looks like it'll be amazing as well. So far what i've seen my friends play has really impressed me, i must say.

This works for a while but it gets progressivly worse the period between good framerate to watching slideshow gets progressivly worse .I reached a point where it was between 45min to an 1hour and I had to reset, down from about 5 hours every reset, Slight warning this doesnt seem to affect all ps3 its probably more complex than the explanation of large filesize etc and probably involves several issues, so u mightbe one of the lucky ps3 users

Did Bethesda say they were going to address the issues?

I know we excuse them for having such large worlds that bugs are inevitible, but some of these game breaking ones should of be dealt with. They must of known about this during their testing QA period.

gamespot didn't. They said the ps3 version had some jittery framerate and pauses, but was pretty much the same as the other versions. Who's wrong??

This. At the time I arrived at my decision to purchase, all I'd heard was that the 360 version was having troubles streaming textures when installed. I decided I'd go with PS3 version then since FO 3 ran well enough for me on PS3 besides the occasional jitteriness.

Skyrim is quickly becoming downright unplayable. No excuses for this at all.

I find it disturbing how people can give Bethesda a free pass just because the games are huge open world games. GTA, RDR, Just Cause, are open world games as well and RDR's map size is actually larger than Skyrim yet doesn't have any where near the amount of problems Skyrim has. Bethesda doesn't seem to understand that if they want to make games, make them right. How can PS3 users enjoy the game if it won't let them? I'd feel ripped off and pissed. Just don't make it for PS3 in the first place.

My saves is at 6100kb and it's running the same when I first started. Though the game froze on me twice, but that's about it.

and what would have happened had any reviewer dared to speak about this? they would have been labeled as part of the international conspiracy, a petition would have been started to boycott something and the information would have been ignored anyway.

what reviewer wants that kind of a headache? better to just ignore it and copy paste the 360 review.

What happens is that we sacrifice the integrity of future products by not addressing a very relevant issue and chalking it up as still the best game ever made. I'm assuming they sent out the Xbox 360 version for review because they are fully aware of the technical issues in the PS3 version. If not addressed in their reviews, they should at least question it in interviews... but everything was glowing. New engine, new graphics, I was hopeful and convinced the issues were put to rest. Games should never come down to a cost/benefit analysis, and that's exactly what happened to the PS3 version.

[QUOTE="DragonfireXZ95"] After reading this, I'm really glad I'm not a PS3 only gamer.DragonfireXZ95

Can't stand the controls or graphics on the consoles.

really? dude thats pretty dramatic..lol..you might not like the controls just like I hate the keyboard..BUT the graphics?? really?? your eyes that golden??

That is not my problem to worry about as a reader. One cannot fix the internet.

It's an unfortunate issue, and it's unknown as to whether it'll be fixed.

lundy86_4
Good point, as they never fixed the PS3 bug on the Oblivion GotY disc. Get bitten by a vampire, the game won't let you finish the cure quest, so you're stuck with being a pariah to everyone, and you can't be out in the sun.

I knew better than to believe all the cows on this site claiming it was better on PS3 this time, so I got it for the 360 and haven't had a single problem so far.
