We've always done a lot of DLC for our games. We love making them and you always ask us for more. To reward our most loyal fans, this time we’ll be offering a Season Pass that will get you all of the Fallout 4 DLC we ever do for just $30. Since we’re still hard at work on the game, we don’t know what the actual DLC will be yet, but it will start coming early next year. Based on what we did for Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim, we know that it will be worth at least $40, and if we do more, you'll get it all with the Season Pass.

Not shock or surprised, no revolting against the system... its simply expected, and looking forward to it.

@blue_hazy_basic: It's absurd to announce a season pass for stuff that isn't even planned at this point in time (according to their wording) :P

Well since Bethesda stated that Fallout 4 was nearly complete before E3 begin, I have no problem with this news since they can actually work on any DLC if the game is finish and start working whatever it is.

@davillain-: The quote says no work has been done on anything related to DLC. In fact it says they don't even know what they'll make for DLC yet. The game will launch in early October. They'll gladly receive your $30 while they figure out what they may or may not do as DLC.

For most other companies I would have had something akin to an allergic reaction to that dlc season pass.

But in the case of Bethesda I am honestly willing to buy this. There are very few Devs able to make good DLC that is worth the money and time, but Bethesda has pretty consistently put out good dlc, which did not take away from the base game, and expanded on it in a good way.

I guess it all comes down to the notion that Bethesdas DLC is more akin to actual expansion packs rather then small piecemeal components, and content that felt like it should have belonged in the base game.

If they deliver everything DLC they are going to make for 30$? I might take the chance and buy it.

But then They are more of an exception then the rule, most of the times the obligatory "dlc season pass" thing is little short of poison.

@Desmonic: so you prefer they cut content out and work on the dlc while they work on the game? With every other season pass the kind of content is usually not known other than a name and a vague description. Bethesda has a great track record with dlc

And like the rest of the Bethesda games I have loved, I will beat the everliving piss out of the vanilla game and then rebuy the complete edition on STEAM when it is $20 on a summer sale.

Okay, and they are being honest about it.

I also don't get the 'at it again' deal here, barring the horse armor debacle, which is excusable because it was literally the first attempt at DLC in a big game, Bethesda has had some of the best post launch DLC out of all the big companies. While I will not buy a Season Pass, ever, period, I don't exactly understand the issue here. Especially since Bethesda is not known for skimping out on content in the base game to begin with.

DLC isn't bad by nature, it's all about how it's done. Of course this is the same company that brought us horse armor, actually I think Bethesda started the DLC trend in general.

But I mean this is Neo-Bethesda, chances are it'll be trash.

You got to give bethesda credit for being honest here.

Besides, its Bethesda. Whatever the DLC content is, I can almost assure you it will be well worth the money and far superior to the vanilla content.

I have never played a Bethesda game that felt unfinished, I doubt they will start now.

You do know, "planning" takes, at best, 2-3 people (the creatives) which don't do much work in these final stages of the development time, right? "Working" in one thing does not imply stopping work on the other nor does it imply "cutting" anything.

I'd get that if we were talking about a 20 people studio or some random EA/Acti game...

Horse armor aside, Bethesda has had some of the best and most impressive DLC in the industry. The horse armor is even excusable, since it was the first instance of DLC in a big game.

So... don't buy it till you know what you are paying for? This is not even like the egregious cases of other AAA games and publishers, where content is clearly being cut out and held back from the base game, in fact it's Bethesda, there'll be almost too much to do in the game here.

This is just people making a mountain out of a molehill for no real reason, not really.

Bethesda does not start working on DLC until after the base game has shipped. Which makes it obvious that they don't know what the DLC will be yet, since even the vanilla game has not released yet.

There is really no issue here, the entire episode is being blown out of proportion, especially given Bethesda's excellent track record with DLC in general.

@charizard1605:

You're totally right it's not a big deal because this is only a small step removed from the usual DLC plans. This one just doesn't even have a plan. It's a Kickstarter, basically. A Kickstarter with a blank page, no video, no sales pitch, but it's by a developer that we can probably trust to deliver.

@charizard1605: I don't think the issue is the act of people buying it later when they know what it is.

It's the announcing to the world "Gives us $30 for something not even WE know what will be". That's a bad standard for any business. Like I said, I might be IN if the game is good (you know I love this franchise), but this crosses me the wrong way :/

Also, wasn't Fallout 4 releasing in October? I though it was. Odd.

This is none of that- Bethesda literally has not even asked for payment yet, there is no way to even buy the Season Pass. They are just discussing their plans in an open and transparent manner with the fans, where exactly is the harm in that?

So....$30, pretty please? :D

I really don't get gamers. If someone makes a game and locks out part of it for DLC (like destiny) gamers get pissed (and rightfully so) but if someone plans to make DLC but hasn't made it yet (which is how it should be) gamers still get pissed? To me it just feels like gamers get pissed at everything, the community is so toxic

Good thing about season passes is you're not obligated to get them before the DLC releases. I say just wait and see if the DLC looks worth it, and if so, get the season pass if you're still thirsting for content. Even if the DLC looks substantial, much of the time I've long moved past a game and it's not even worth it to revisit it just for a little extended play. I just tell myself that when I get to playing it again one day I'll download the DLC then... if/when that happens. Only time I'm grateful for DLC is if I don't play a game at launch, get it maybe a year or two later (or pick up the GOTY edition with all DLC).

You are getting pissed on the assumptions that:

  • You can buy the Season Pass at launch
  • What the Season Pass constitutes of has still not been communicated to you at launch
  • The Season Pass is $30

Are you not seeing the problem? It's such a big leap from where we are to where you are. All Bethesda is doing here is being honest and in very vague terms, with no commitments, and no avenues to facilitate payment, discussing future DLC plans. So once again- what is the problem?

This is well said. Would you rather they have told and shown you all the content that you will be able to buy for moremoney months before even the main game has launched?

I don't like people trying to sell me something with nothing as it's base. Bad standard on my opinion. And now, openly announcing it's price it's not just "discussing" it's plans. They're trying to convince you that you'll be getting a sweet deal with this, thus the "$40 worth" comment following it.

It's business, but no the kind of business I like.

Honestly, the horse armor debacle was more controversial than anything.

Compared to a lot of DLC you will find today, the Horse Armor is extremely generous. Considering how Riot games can charge 15 dollars for a single skin and capcom has all sorts of questionable practices.

When they actually ask for money with no future plans announced - which is not something Bethesda have actually done here yet - that is when I think it will be justifiable to be all up in arms about this. Until then, we are just beating around the bush based on assumptions predicated on top of assumptions.

And even then, I will personally always be more willing to give certain companies the benefit of the doubt - companies like Bethesda, Rockstar, Valve, Nintendo, companies that have proven themselves and acquitted themselves well with DLC in other words - than I will with others, until such time as I feel my faith has been taken unfair advantage of. Bethesda is one of the few companies that does DLC right, I am not worried.

So when it's on sale at launch (which you know it will be, like any game ever) if the DLC plans remain the same, what then? "Oh but Bethesda makes good DLC" doesn't really justify it for me, I'm sorry. Plus on Fallout 3 on Broken Steel and Point Lookout were actually "good". Thematically I enjoyed Op: Anchorage too.

Pissed? It crosses me the wrong way, as I've said, but pissed? Rofl. Read the spoiler which you know I can't edit :P

Cool, you're not worried. That's fine.

I am, thus the OP (would make the thread regardless because it's news) :P

@darkangel115: They're trying to sell you a $30 season pass based on nothing. Literally zero.

But they are not actually selling you anything, not yet.

Ifit goes on sale at launch with us still not knowing about the DLC, you are free to rally around the issue, and I won't call you out, until then, this is just silly.

What's the point of this announcement? To get me excited for their future DLC?

It failed.

So it's basically a Kickstarter for DLC which does not even have any info on yet... yeah right.

@Desmonic: so you prefer they cut content out and work on the dlc while they work on the game? With every other season pass the kind of content is usually not known other than a name and a vague description. Bethesda has a great track record with dlc

Bethesda does not start working on DLC until after the base game has shipped. Which makes it obvious that they don't know what the DLC will be yet, since even the vanilla game has not released yet.

There is really no issue here, the entire episode is being blown out of proportion, especially given Bethesda's excellent track record with DLC in general.

ding ding ding, winner.

Desmonic wouldn't have made this thread if it was Naughty Dog's doing.

It's fine... I love Bethesda and have no doubt they will come out with some great DLC, but I will never buy a season pass. I will get the game day one, play it with all it's glorious bugs and love every minute of it. Then, in a couple of years I will play it again when all the DLC is on sale and plenty of mods will be available.

Hopefully the DLCs add a sufficient amount of content to the game to make it worth $30.
