I'm asking this because people will frequently say that Tomb Raider does combat much better than Uncharted.

Tomb Raider's combat is too static, in my opinion. A few things it does better are the field of view while aiming, the manual healing in the sequel and weapon attachments (some of which I like and some of which I find silly).

Tomb Raider by far, it has a lot more options and variety than Uncharted's strung together cover shooting mechanics and can't miss even if you tried auto-aim.

Anyway the thread needs this.

Tomb raider, more variety. The only problem is that by the end of the game Lara becomes a one woman army and she can kill everything in so many ways with so many types of tools that it becomes bizarre

Mechanically, Tomb Raider has the edge, but Uncharted beats it in enemy encounter design along with how the gunfight environments are designed.

Tomb raider. Even in hard uncharted combat feels too easy.

On a plus note tomb raider games(whole franchise) also had better way to get to treasures.

Tomb Raider is a shooting gallery and a tease, combat sux unless you like its ease of use. Disagree with @GarGx1 the latest UC4, and LL are way better. They are no longer just cover shooters. There weakness I would say is wonky cross hair, recoil and spread fire mechanics. When it comes to tps combat though these latest UC games gets you to utilise all the core part of the game during combat. They have better encounter design. Its night and day compare to comfort easy shooting gallery Tomb Raider. The variety is the part done well in UC. They say they are going to improve that aspect in the next Tomb Raider. Lara is finally going to become a predator.

I say Tomb Raider based off my experience with Uncharted games on PS3, haven't played the PS4 Uncharted games though. Though interestingly I think Max Payne 3 makes a worthy comparison to Uncharted series since in ways it too seemed to wanted to follow in Uncharted's footsteps and I think surpassed it on its solid gunplay that I feel not many TPS games can come close to.

@ezekiel43: combat is smoother and has more variety in tomb raider

even tr2013 had a better combat than uncharted 4

also, shooting is way easier with a mouse than a ps4 controller

Well I have only played Tomb Raider 2013 and no uncharted. For me Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb has a much better combat compare to Tomb Raider.

I have only played TR 2013 but I would give the edge to that game over the Uncharted games in terms of combat.

Almost everyone in the thread contradicts this.

It's hard to judge, because I have only played Tomb Raider with a mouse and keyboard and Uncharted 2 with a controller. Although, I did enjoy the combat in Rise of the Tomb Raider, and I thought the combat was meh in Uncharted 2, so I'll give it to Tomb Raider.

Definitely the old UC games combat are not better and I think some are basing on that. Both the new UC games and the TR games are an improvement to those games in terms of combat. Thinking about it I think Juub1990 and Vatusus got the best answer. UC4 encounter are more varied with consistently giving you different approach and enemies have different states. Your fighting same type of dudes though its a bit of a negative. The mechanics are also fucked trying to do too much perhaps with different recoils and spread fire for different weapons. It just does a lot more with the enemies they platform just as you do. Problem is most will put the game down before it gets to those open area of scope and approach combat or ambushed combat lol. Overall game play because of exploration superiority Tomb Raider but tps a bit of a shooting gallery.

I wouldn't go so far, but I feel like I'm in bizarro world, seeing so much praise for this mediocre, slow combat system. The auto-crouch system and lack of hip-shooting in Tomb Raider are lame, and the melee is clunky. Also, the guns are weak, as you can see at the end of the first TR encounter in the video. It's because, like every modern action game, it uses a skill tree and upgrade system. Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy are far more active. Even in Uncharted 2, I didn't use much cover, until late into the game, when it all became badly balanced.

I've played both and I prefer TR.

And I know cows are going to jump all over this like rabid dogs, but I genuinely think that TR 2013/RotTR are better games than any Uncharted (although Uncharted 2 is pretty awesome too).

@ezekiel43:

Uncharted. Tomb Raider's combat is slower, sluggish, no blind fire and no duck and cover system. Firefights in the new TR are a bit of a drag. Meanwhile, Uncharted's combat, especially in UC4 is silky smooth. Blind fire, excellent duck and cover system, great melee combat with sick tag team moves. Not to mention that you can shoot while hanging from ledges and swinging.

So true. Even though I like Tomb Raider games more, the combat could sure use some heavy work. Uncharted 4 only shows how far behind TR is in that aspect. If Crystal Dynamics would fix this in the later entries though, THAT would be awesome! Hope they do!

I'd say TR if Uncharted 4 didn't come out but U4 really did an amazing job with the combat, TR now looks like another cover-and-shoot game to me.

I have played all Uncharted games, and both the new TR games.

And based on that actual experience, I say Uncharted does combat far better. Both ranged and close combat.

In the new TR games I just did not like the combat system. It was not fluid. It was chore, especially the bigger shoot outs. Close combat did not work either. There were perks for close combat, but even when I unlocked them, the combat remained just as bad. It just did not flow.

So, Uncharted kicks ass in combat, TR does not. Fact.

You dont know if "almost everyone" in this thread actually played both. This is SW after all so by common misconception this will work this way: Cows will vote Uncharted, everyone else will vote TR

I actually played both and contrary to some I can actually prove it

here

You're comparing Uncharted 2 with TR but U2 combat is severely dated compared to U4 and TLL. U4 and TLL do combat encounters both in stealth and gunplay way better than TR unless you really like playing with the bow and arrows, in that case TR will be better.

@TheEroica said:

You couldnt be any more factually wrong. Saying you prefer TR over Uncharted is one thing, saying TR is objectively better than Uncharted is just factually wrong, sorry

Gunplay - U4/TLL > TR/RotTR

Stealth mechanics - U4/TLL > TR/RotTR

enemy encounter + combat options (verticality and level design that gives combat approach options) - U4/TLL > TR

Traversal - U4/TLL > TR/RotTR

Scenery variety - U4/TLL > TR/RotTR

Puzzles - It depends on personal preference since TR will focus more on physics based puzzles while Uncharted will focus more on logical puzzles

Exploration - TR has the edge here but most is composed by tedious fetch quests that break the pacing of the game. Treasure hunting is also better but thats not saying much

Atmosphere - TR 2016 has better atmosphere over the others but RotTR atmosphere was a disappointment so, overall, Uncharted has the edge but this is personal opinion anyway

Characters/story - No argument here. Uncharted > TR

Your answer to this will depend on your play style. Do you prefer in your face action? You'll probably prefer Uncharted. Do you prefer a more stealthy approach? You'll probably prefer Tomb Raider.

Both games have pretty good play mechanics. The bow is done perfectly in Tomb Raider. I actually bought a bow in real life to learn because of the 2013 game. As for Uncharted, the gun and melee fighting is pretty satisfying. Even the added rope swing take down mechanics put a smile on my face.

There's a lot of "it depends" that goes into answering this question.

Tomb Raider, aiming just feels bad in every single Naughty Dog game and it really sucks a lot of the enjoyment out of the experience for me.

TR the stealth and action just feels better imo

Bow/Arrow get's the automatic win here and out of all the Uncharted games I have played, NOT one single Bow/Arrow weapon was ever feature in Uncharted games. Even TLOU has a Bow lol.

Tomb Raider/Rise of the Tomb Raider combat is a lot of fun with the Bow.

After playing the first three Uncharted games, which I adored, Tomb Raider felt like a fresher take on the formula. So much so I didn't even bother with Uncharted 4. Meanwhile, Rise of the Tomb Raider was excellent, and yes this includes the combat scenarios. Except for that stupid wave of enemies at the end, so dumb.

Uncharted in my opinion.
