I really have not looked into Pokemon since I do not have a DS anymore, but I played Leaf and it was awesome, like an extended version of blue.

The only thing that got progressively worse when it comes to the Pokemon games is the story. Outside of that, Game Freak has done a great job fixing and expanding on it's battle system, which is the heart of Pokemon to begin with (Along with the collection element.)

The cartoon is kiddy but the actual game is a great RPG and even though Im 18 I must say I still enjoy the games.

Actual Pokemon game count by Generations is 4. The rest are breakoffs of preexisting games (Like Yellow and Crystal) or spinoff like Ranger and Snap.
