SW is all graphics so this belongs.

So what console do you think has had the biggest graphical leap? Like launch title to what it's last best release? I haven't been gaming forever, but I'm always amazed how far the PS2 went. The first really great looking game was MGS2, then we get God of War 2 in 2007 which looks like an early PS3 game in SD. The PS3 and 360 have also come really far, look at how the Uncharted franchise and the Gears franchise have evolved graphically. Thoughts?

Yeah... Probably the PS2.

Certianly wouldn't say any of this gen's consoles saw as significant evolution.

NaveedLife

The 3D sucked in most games though.

I get cold shivvers/nausea just thinking of Doom or Jurassic Park on the SNES. (the parts where you go inside, where it transitioned to a FPS). Those were so bad they basically were totally unplayable.

vashkey

resistance

uncharted

And those are both terrible so its a level playing field. I think this gen has come a long way. Maybe not as far as the PS2 but people seem to forget how mediocre everything looked before Gears of War.

Well I still say PS2 because the last PS2 titles look better than Fall of Man and.... everything on the PS3 until Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The PS2 started as a next gen console and ended looking as good as the current next gen console. PS3 and 360 have come a long way but I don't think its quite as far as the PS2.

No it didn't.

All those chips devs threw into carts added quite a bit of extra power to the system. Sure it's not really cheating(hence kind of) but for most consoles power of the system is static.

Actually static consoles is a recent thing. The added chips were included by design. Genesis, NES, SNES, N64, Master System, Saturn, and most of the consoles in those gens were sort-of upgradable. It was only until last gen that the habit stopped.

The PSP... The launch games compared to its more recent stuff, its like it is a completely different system or something. Games just kept stepping up over and over again

Sega Genesis gets a nod as well.

Wasn't a big fan of the system then but I would have to say Sega Genesis really bumped the graphics of the time and after that I would say Neo Geo

Oh man I totally forgot about the PSP. I actually think I might agree with you. Ghost of Sparta is incredible and when you compare that to, say, Daxter, big big jump.

Did know about some those such as the Atari 2600 and NES but just wrote them off as vram upgrades, the snes chips seemed like so much more. Though whatever they threw into virtua racing for the Genesis must be similar. So in any case I concede.

Maybe this gen? I never reallt paid much attention to graphics before this gen but we have gone from ugly games like Resistance Fall of Man to games like Killzone 3 and God of War. Huge leap between them

Well that was the good thing about carts. The carts were actually part of the hardware. So the carts could easily be upgraded and what not, without worrying about the base hardware.

It is like a PC, plug in better hardware as time goes.

In current day, the physical disc isn't part of the actual hardware process. It just delivers the data needed, that is all. Of course, this just means that carts are more expensive, which happened. Publishers and developers cried over the costs required in such thing. Made sense for a market that was going to see new consoles every 4 years.

Most major consoles have had similar levels of improving graphics.

Though If I had to point to one console, it'd be the ps3. From Developers not even using the spe's + the low optimization of launch games (Resistance fall of man, and a wealth of shoddy ports) to multiplats catching up and having exclusives like Gow 3 and Uc3.

I'd say this gen went through a pretty big leap. here is oblivion races vs skyrim races. and this isnt even that big of a jump compared to something like from resistance fall of man to something like gears 3 or battlefield 3

N64 went a long way graphically during its life cycle (partly thanks to the additional 4 MB of RAM plugin).

The Dreamcast. It was the first time my jaw hit the floor, I noticed graphics a lot as a kid and the Dreamcast blew me away. Now not so much, even if something is hyper realistic I am not going to care. Prefer art style now.

PSOne .. Tekken 1 >> Tekken 3 is a very good example.

Wii .. any early 3rd party game >> SMG 2 + MPC.

XBOX360 .. GUN >> GOW3.

To be fair .. i think every console has a big graphical evo somehow.

...and there were several games on Xbox that were graphically superior to *bows down* Halo 2.
