Well, the PS3 "graphical leap" wasn't really realized until about a year after the PS3 was released. The launch titles were very underwhelming. Same for the Xbox 360.

Nah.... 3D games went mainstream with the N64

I think the graphical leap between the PS2 & PS3 is larger.

From PS1 to PS2 was more noticeable, but the jump from PS2 to PS3 is bigger if you want to get technical.

Yeah, while a great game, resistence didnt exactly look all that great. Kameo did look really great though for the time.

Wrong! If you played XBOX, and then got a 360 and put a disc in that said "Kameo: Elements of Power" in the drive on launch day (and your 360 didn't break), then you saw the graphical leap.

Well from what I remember when the PS2 first launched, a lot of people were disappointed with the graphics because Sony over hyped the damn thing to have PIXAR quality graphics.

PS1 to PS2, obviously. With the PS2 came the more frequent use of lip syncing(or moving mouths in general which wasn't common on the original Playstation to begin with), motion capturing, cel shading, bloom, lens flair and alot of other cool new graphfical tricks. Some PS2 game even supported progressive scan. All the PS3 has been about is just polishing whats already established, HD and upping the amount of on screen characters and bigger environments.

Aside from a few 2D games most PS1 games look like garbage by todays standards. Atleast PS2 games don't make your eyes bleed.

Definitely PS1 to PS2. The PS1 was generally pretty ugly graphically, even compared to the N64+Hi-Res mode. With the PS2, characters and environments finally started to resemble and reflect reality.

Many late-gen PS2 games still look quite spectacular if you have component cables or play on a small, standard definition TV.

N64 looked like a bunch of blocks. PS1 atleast had regular looking character models.

I'm sort of confused since the first game is for the 64... Anyways your first 2 pics are too blurry. PS2 was capable of progressive scan and I'm not seeing it.

If you stop for a second and allow yourself to remember the past instead of staying in the present (a time where you can still be impressed by visuals) you'll realise that the differences between the Ps1 and PS2 were immense and just logically far greater. Facial animations/visible emotions, lip syncing? during the Ps1 era these were a rarity if not non existant. Draw distance? please..

When you say lips syncing, do you mean all the characters look like they're saying "om nom nom nom nom nom nom" all the time? Because I was actually refering to how a fair amount of PS2 game actually synced the lips to what the characters were saying.

Some PS2 games still look fairly impressive today.

Shadow of the Colossus

Final Fantasy XII

Black

Honestly, this gen has probably seen the smallest leap in graphical quality and thats probably because now developers need to make the content in higher resolutions. So it takes alot more effort just to put out the same sort of quality content.

Vashkey does the PS2 the most justice. Visionary's comparison was great as well. Also from personal experience I was a bit more impressed with PS2 / Gamecube. Not that PS3 and XBOX 360 weren't really impressive.

Easily from ps1/n64 gen to PS2/xbox/GC. Just compare Tekken 3 to Tekken Tag Tournament or GT2 to GT3/4 or FM. That was huuge difference. Jump to this gen wasnt that impressive...i still find some of the last gen games kinda good looking (Chaos Theory,Tekken Tag, Riddick,D3,GoW2,GT3,FM)

Well considering I bought a "new" Pentium2 w/ voodoo5 card (got rid of that old 386sx with 2x cd drive..lol) after the ps1 it was a huge graphical leap for me. Going from PS1 and 386 dos pc games to 3d accelerated 1024x768 res (which was a lot and pretty much 4:3 HD res back then!) with games like Dues EX, thief, System Shock, Unreal , Unreal Tornament, Alice, Quake 2/3, Soldier of Fortune, Baldur's Gate 1/2, Torment, Fallout 1/2 , etc... Back in 2000 That was a huge leap. But the PS3 brought great art-styles and incredible graphics for a console allowing me to play games like I used to have on ps1 but with pc quality graphics. Now that i own a a ps2 as well I will say that ps2 - ps3 was a much bigger leap then ps1 - ps2.

PS1 to PS2. Last gen was the first gen when full 3D graphics could be made to look very realistic. Even Resident Evil, one of the PS1's nicest looking gamesdidn't look anywhere near as good and it had static environments.

is that slient hill 1 in the top pick? Why does that game look a lot better on my psp and also mgs1 for that matter looks way better on my psp? But thats definatly how they look on the ps3, I guess the smaller screen makes it look sharp? Also those ps2 shots are bullshots. There is no jaggies on them and no combing or shimmering textures, at least that is how they look when I play my ps2 on my hd tv or 24" pc monitor.... Bad combing and motion trails plus really - really bad jaggies. Which I don't seem to get from the ps1 games (well jaggies but no motion trails or coming like with ps2 games, could be because of hdmi on ps3?)

No look at launch ps1 games to end of console ps1 games like comparing wipeout, or virtua fighter/tekken to legend of dragoon / soul reaver... big difference. Or summoner to GOW2 /SOTC/GT4 big big difference. OR again compare Rfom to Uncharted 2/KZ2/Heavy Rain /FF13/ GOW3... big difference. Sony always puts out tech that devs need to unlock the potential and master the system. Which is why ps brand games always look better and better throughout the gen. Sony doesn't overhype. You people seen the kz2 cgi and the actual game looked better... hype met and destroyed!

PS1 to PS2 was HUGE leap, but so is the leap from PS2 to PS3. The only thing about this gen is that it's the current gen and it's still young.

So from the current standpoint, PS1 to PS2 was a far bigger leap than last gen to current gen.

They aren't bullshots o_O they are just compressed. Kinda hard to see jaggies when your screen shots are smaller then the actual resolution, regardless the point is still made when you look at the textures and faces, when you consider the fact that they actually have recognizable facial features in the PS2 shots then you kinda get the point. As for the PS1 shots, I played these titles at launch, they looked that ugly if not worse.

I think PS1 to PS2.

When the PS2 was first released, there wasn't really much of a difference, but then Konami released MGS2...and wow. That was the first game on the PS2 to really show its potential. Hell, it still impresses me even today. And it was released just 1 year after the PS2 (PS2 in 2000, MGS2 on 2001). Definitely in the top 5 best looking PS2 games, IMO.

ps1 to ps2 by far. The only thing ps3 does is play games in higher resolution and add some shadow/lightning. If I play wii games on my pc in hd it's almost as good looking as xbox360/ps3 games.
