What are the biggest mistakes made with the PS3,360 and Wii this gen? I've added the ones I can think of below. Please feel free to add your own

Microsoft - Terrible Build Quality. P2P online that costs 50 bucks a year and is full of swearing children. No KB/M Support, multiple SKU's
Nintendo - Terrible third party support. Not making enough consoles to satisfy public demand, terrible storage solution, terrible online, not enough support for developers (resulting in crappy looking games), letting Ubisoft make games for their console
Sony - releasing late, making their console too expensive, a difficult development environment, high development costs, terrible controller, terrible launch lineup, overambitious online service that was delayed, useless and expensive to implement multimedia features, multiple SKU's with wildly differing functionality, losing exclusives to more lucrative platforms, comparitively poor selection of downloadable games

Nintendo - hyping the wiimote into the sun and then showing no real innovation with it.

Sony - hyping their console into the sun and having it bite them on the behind later.

Microsoft - trying to deny and hide the fact their hardware is shoddy instead of doing something about it.

Microsoft: poor QA, poor PR about hardware issues

Nintendo: poor 3rd party games, same rehash games again(my own personal opinion)

Sony: Not deliverying on all the promises initially stated in the time they were initially stated

Microsoft: RED RING OF DOOM and the absolutely atrocious build quality of the 360, no standard hard drive, paying for online.

Sony: FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE U.S. DOLLARS!, delays and the steep learning curve for developers.

Nintendo: Poor 3rd party support......can't really think of anything else.

i wouldnt say multiple skus are a bad thing

a bigger mistake by microsoft would be the lack of hard drive on the core

MS-The core model(Who gave them this bright idea), and RRoD

Sony-Teh Hype,Teh Cell, and the Stressing of blu-ray over games

Nintendo-Did nothing wrong on their end unless we count that they droped Nintendo's seal of Quality thus flooding the systems with Shovelware

There's only a few people in the company that have any talent are working on other platforms. The only way you can get Ubisoft to stop making crap Wii games is ban them from working on the console

MS - you pretty much nailed it with the quality and multiple SKUs. That does turn off consumers.

SONY - Pretty much nailed it. If they had a better launch line up, it would have made things MUCH easier for them.

N - online is getting better. Mario Kart is good proof of this. They should have planned to release a hard drive add-on. For this system, it can affored to be optional. Maybe it can still happen. The supply problem caught EVERYONE off guard, including N, but you would think they could have solved it by now.

For both MS and Sony, I think they are both a little too expensive, and they both should have 100% backward compatibility, or close to it.

PS3 especially. If I had a PS3 I would need full PS2 BC, especially given the questionable quality of the PS3 games released so far

Nintendo-Did nothing wrong on their end unless we count that they droped Nintendo's seal of Quality thus flooding the systems with Shovelware

wdave92

You do know that the seal of quality had nothing to do with the actual quality of games, right? It was a way of gripping third parties by the balls, and merely filterring out truly obscene stuff. The NES was the first console (obviously) to have games with the seal, and there was undeniably the most crap and shovelware on that system than on any other Nintendo console. That seal meant nothing, and was a visual symbol of Nintendo's sheer stubborness and ruthlessness concerning third parties.

Anyway, Sony and Nintendo's largest mistake this gen is underestimating how lazy and whiney developers are. Sony, in regards to the "oh no, the Cell is too complicated to programme for, lets whine about it" and Nintendo with the "we dont really have to put effort in, people will buy our crappy ports and cash in titles... oh, they didnt buy our titles? third party games dont sell on wii, we wont bother trying".

Other than that:

Microsoft: Expensive online structure, hardware that isnt well constructed, online with annoying little "hardcore" kids, releasing incomplete games that end up hitting the PC later on with better content, a half-arsed attempt at targetting the market Nintendo is after, doesnt really know what to do with its brand image, flooding specific genre's with lower quality stuff and therefore diluting the quality of games, too much arrogance for the new kid on the block.

(though their controller has been perfected, their online service is unsurpassed, the console looks gorgeous this time round, removable and upgradable hard drive, they clearly are trying to be more diverse this generation and it has some of the best games released semi-exclusive this gen)

Sony: Expensive console at launch, multiple SKU's that come and go resulting into consumer confusion, overemphasis of Blu Ray, online structure that isnt as advanced as Microsoft's, apparent lack of quality titles (not imo, but nevermind), difficult to programme for (see above point), controller contains an obvious half arsed attempt at motion sensing, but loses the rumble feature, is now not backwards compatible with any PS2 games, has crappy load times.

(though looks effing sexy, has much better durability than the Xbox 360, has a diverse range of games to cater to many tastes, has exclusive big hitters that people will most definitely want, is arguably the most powerful console, free online, stunning visuals and a strong sense of quality).

Nintendo: Releasing numerous peripherals that are cluttering up my room, graphics and physics ect are not as advanced as the other two consoles, being slow with the quality VC releases, obvious storage problem that prevents lazy developers from finding a solution in regards to DLC, crippled online features, the release of too many useless channels, not-so-good-but-better third party support, not offerring the black version at launch.

(though making the most comfortable and accessible controller ever, allowing everyone to play their games, giving developers a chance to do something a little bit more fresh, fantastic backwards compatibility, excellent downloadable games service (in regards to Virtual Console and WiiWare), releasing all their core franchises back to back, complete lack of a games drought, offerring a different experience compared to the other two consoles, power conserving console, small, sleek, cheap, but sexy.)

I know you made this thread soley to bash the PS3, Notice how the PS3 has double the faults than the other 2 ( Terrible controller?) Don't make me laugh, thats opinion, I would prefer it way more than the the X360 controller, But do I go around saying its a terrible controller? No.

Nintendo: Did everything right, marketed to the right people, made their machine for the right price, well, the only thing they did wrong was have massive hardware shortages, but, no one predicted them to be the dominant force this gen.

Sony: Bragged about stuff that wasn't even real...4D? 31432423432432432432FPS on 1080p HD games? Ability to clone humans to provide you with a cheap in house work force? Okay...well...the last was fake, but, they made some asinine claims. Their Canadian customer support also sucks.

Microsoft: Horrible hardware. Should have spent an extra 6 months developing the thing to not have such an excessive death rate. Jumping out in front made no difference, as the wii is destroying it anyways, so, the hardware should have been improved. Good customer service, horrible hardware engineers.

What are the biggest mistakes made with the PS3,360 and Wii this gen? I've added the ones I can think of below. Please feel free to add your own

Microsoft - Terrible Build Quality. Not quite sure what that means.

P2P online that costs 50 bucks a year not much, considering its's the best

and is full of swearing children not microsoft's fault.

No KB/M Support for a console?,

multiple SKU's Choice is good

Nintendo - Terrible third party support improving.

Not making enough consoles to satisfy public demand they're already breaking all shipping and manufacturing records, demand is simply impossibly high,

terrible storage solution they're looking at this, in the meantime, they're flash drive is acceptable, and at least you can use SD,

terrible online varies from game to game, but still a fairly consistantly bad problem,

not enough support for developers (resulting in crappy looking games) umm, you're trying to blame bad devs on Nintendo?,

letting Ubisoft make games for their console ( at least they had no more heroes)

Sony - releasing late, not really, in fact they probably should have delayed it for a while... well, there was europe...

making their console too expensive it's not too expensive if people buy it,

a difficult development environment granted, but it can end up with very good games if devs get past the hurdles,

high development costs devs have a lot of money,

terrible controller tried and true,

terrible launch lineup true, they should have delayed it a little,

overambitious online service that was delayed at least they're trying,

useless and expensive to implement multimedia features Blu-ray is winning if I'm not mistaken,

multiple SKU's with wildly differing functionality this is a definate negative,

losing exclusives to more lucrative platforms this isn't a mistake that sony made, at least not intentionally,

comparitively poor selection of downloadable games matter of opinion

vicmackey39

I feel like being argumentative right now.

I dont see how an amazing online service (xbox live) is a mistake. KB/M on a console would just make playing fps games so much easier for people who had a kb/m on their console. Its really would make the game unfair. Especially sniping is significantly easier with a kb/m

Lionheart08

The "bigger is better concept" is a double edged sword though. If they didn't add all the extra items, people would have been upset that it had nothing and should have everything because it came out a year later. It's one of those you can't please everyone type of things.

I'd say these are the problems for each company...

Microsoft - Faulty hardware.

Sony - System price.

Nintendo - I think they've turned off some core gamers.

Microsoft
Xbox360: Not bothering to fix shoddy hardware; online filled with 12 year olds.
Nintendo
Wii: Focusing too much on non-gamers (sure, that's where the money is at, but come on); not enough third party support; Friend Codes
DS: None... except for friend codes and the Web Browser
Sony
PS3: FIVEHUNDREDANDNINETYNINGUSDOLLARS; Sixaxis is HORRIBLE; DualShock 3 is overpriced; hyping their console to the stars and failing to live up to expectations; bashing the Wii and 360 when their console is worse
PSP: Overly traditional in the games department; too many features

This is what I think is funny, focusing on non gamers, WTF were you before you became a gamer? I'll give you a hint.. a NON GAMER.. what does a NON GAMER become when they start playing games? Thats right, a gamer. Expanding the market, and introducing new people into the market is NEVER a bad thing.

Sony: Dualshock, not going back to drawing board (should have made easier system to develop for and given some more ram, this would have seemingly taken care of all the problems it had). Im still a cow though. Ive traditionally been a late adopter, so some of the earlier problems i have completely avoided (lack of games and price).

Microsoft: Faulty hardware, and lack of wifi. The latter is causing me a real pain in the a** at the moment. I cant be bothered to wire it up as it is in my bedroom, and router is two floors below. I did get around this by sharing my laptop connection, but that laptop is now broken. Have beeen offline for nearly three months now.

Nintendo : Their biggest problem is that they forgot to release a system.

MS: RROD and no HDD as standard in every version. lack of wireless in every sku is also dissapointing. noisey. HDDs are a rip off especially.

Wii: insufficent storage as standard. no coms online. no ethernet port as standard. poor motion sensor in the nunchuck. a bit too conservative in the horsepower department. controllers are expensive.

PS3: blu-ray drive is just too slow and costs a fortune. a waste from a games perspective. poor six axis controls. complex development making games even more expensive to make and they are taking longer. overhyped. no rumble as standard.

MS again: vista...not enough benefit to upgrade an existing PC from XP to vista and DX10 is completly failing to deliver anything note worthy at the mo.

It's pretty easy to discern the difference between the Wii and a system with good third party support like the DS, Ps2 or 360

All 3 consoles-Not developing a first party MMO. That alone would have pushed one console into the permanent lead.

DS-Broken price structure, with Square-Enix and Nintendo's games equal to or higher than Wii games.

PSP-providing ample games and services in Japan, only to disown the rest of the world of their use. Lik-Sang is everything that was wrong with Sony and the PSP and continues to stain the global economy's of scale.

That about covers it.

Clearly they're marketing is working -- look at the Wii itself, Wii Fit, SSBB, and SMG.

Hell if people stop buying Ubi games then we might have some quality titles from them once in a while

vicmackey39

There's only a few people in the company that have any talent are working on other platforms. The only way you can get Ubisoft to stop making crap Wii games is ban them from working on the console

Michel Ancel is a talented developer and he made Ubisoft's best 2 Wii games Rayman Raving Rabbids and Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 (Those 2 games were the best effort Ubisoft put in the Wii and he said he is working on Beyond Good & Evil 2 (But Ubisoft's President might not let him finish it) It is still not known which console it would go on but that is the only Ubisoft developer I trust making a Wii game)

M$: No standard HDD, using a DVD drive for games instead of an HD-DVD or BR drive, RROD, charging for online gaming when both competitors provide it for free.

Nintendo: Lack of hardcore games, last gen. hardware

Sony: Not enough games that really take advantage of the PS3 hardware.

I personally think that the current crop of consoles should have more RAM. It'd sure help with my PS3 constantly spazzing on it's internet browser due to memory restrictions.
