I dont understand!!!!

I am a person on a budget and wont be buying a game not worth my time. I played Bioshock 1, thought it was great. I just beat Mass Effect 2 and thought it was time to move to Bioshock 2 to find everyone's reviews a bit confusing!! I read the reviews talking about how great the game is, how it is familiar yet great atmosphere, intense combat, great weapons, yatayatayata, and then they all ebnd their reviews with a score in the 8's!!!!! What the heck!!!!

SO please make this clearer to me! Is this game a buy, a rent, or forgettable. EXPLAIN WHY!!

It's a rent. Better than Bioshock 1 is a lot of ways but its forgettable story and general feel of sameyness keeps it down.

I hate to be a conspiracy theorist but IMO it felt like major reviewers (based off podcasts, and popular blogs) made up their minds about bioshock 2 even before it was released. If you were to ask me what I though gamespot would rate bioshock 2 weeks before released I would have said 8.5.

So, where's the GS review where they gave it 5.0/10 and where are reviewers calling it mediocre? :|

Step back from the panic, think about numbers for a second... a score is out of 10 okay 10, now 10 is what should be held for only perfect games not many games get this.

A 9 is for nearly flawless games, games that are almost perfect but have a few things holding it back.

8's are for awesome games that aren't quite at the point of flawless for various reasons.

It goes down and down so on and so on.

Bioshock 2 for example is running an 8.8 on Metacritic, this is nearly a 9 which translates into a game which is nearly flawless, score enthusiasts need to relax, if a game doesn't get a 9.5 it doesn't mean it's mediocre.

8 is a good score. It just means it was lacking in some area's, and might be only worth a rent. There are plenty of 8 games I've bought and spent hours on. DMC4 comes to mind.

Yea the story is pretty much opinion.... IGN said the story is better in Part2.. while gamepsot said the story isnt as good as part1.. For me they are about even.

All I wanted in Bioshock2 was improved gameplay/gunplay and a decent online.. they did all that.. while still keeping the amazing atmosphere and story good imo.

Scores and comments are not directly related. A score is a numeric representation of how much the reviewer enjoyed the game... and any good reviewer will tell you in the review about the game itself, which is what you as a gamer should be using to determine whether or not the game is buy-worthy. But even then, you should know well-enough what you are looking for in a game and not have to rely on the opinions of others to decide for you. If you enjoyed BioShock, you'll probably enjoy BioShock 2. If you don't feel like buying it without knowing about it, rent it.

8's are mediocre now? :| Since when? I swear, the reason this is perpetuated is beyond me. It all stems from the year when PS3 had no AAAE's and everyone said it had no games worth bothering with, at least, that's how I see it.

High 8's is not mediocre, yet reviewers found that Bioshock 2 fell a bit too far from the first to rank it up with it's predecessor because it tried things that it didn't need (like MP). Almost any poster here would've given up the MP option for a stronger campaign, story, etc. which doesn't seem to be the case. Reviewers praised Bioshock for doing something really different from what we've seen with FPS' these days but that's not exactly the case with Bioshock 2.

Don't go by whatever reviewers say.

I can find you several games here with a 40 metacritic rating and a 7.5 user rating. Just because a critic says it isn't perfect doesn't mean it's bad.

Also 8.7 isn't mediocre. What are you on? O.o

I agree except for the online as i haven't played that yet and probably won't. but the single player is a blast and severly underrated. I bet it would of gotten a lot of hype if it was still an exclusive series, but you know sys wars if its not exculsive , not as much hype.

And that is the problem with gamers on the internet if it doesn't score a 9+ they think the game sucks. I play a lot of 6.0 games that are great like wkc, don't go by scores use your own minds. If the game looks like it would interest you pick it up. I only listen to reviews on games I don't know much about and even then they can be misleading, Darksiders and Eternal Sonata were both rated high 8.5 and both were horrible. So it can go both ways.. read gs user reviews and pay attention to there key points not just the score.

A matter of preference. I've got all my abilities maxed, so I have points to spend on sprint. And to move the Gyro blades, two quick sword hits and a buster will send them through an entire hallway. I also play on Dante must die or son of sparda, so I love a good challenge.

Being a 360 exclusive helped a lot in the Bisohock scores in a time in which PS3 hating was a sort of very popular sport. Since Bioshock is multi is almost useless in the flame wars, so no one reviewer cares about hyping the score.

Yeah, TC. Sounds like your thread title should be, "Bioshock 2 - Great Comments, Great Scores.....What's my problem?!!!!"

Seriously, in this day and age we as gamers have become a nation of overprivileged whiny babies when it comes to scores. Not every game is going to be AAA and not every game that ISN'T is bad. In fact, most are very good. If System Wars rules are law here then why aren't we applying that to ratings? I'll break it down.

10 - Prime
9 - Excellent
8 - Great
7 - Good
6 - Fair
5 - Mediocre

So according to most reviews, Bioshock 2 is a GREAT game. I recently got Wanted: Weapons Of Fate (not just for trophies, I actually like the Wanted movie and enjoyed the demo a while back). That game got a 6.0 on this site. That's "fair." In truth? It was fun for a single playthrough. Not an amazing game by any means, but not garbage either. I could see the things reviewers were saying they could improve. I noted it, and moved on. Still, for a short game that got generally "meh" reviews, it was fun.

In school an 85% was a B+. Don't be one of those kids complaining about getting good grades.
