http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/doctors-on-call BioWare's focus has always been storytelling within great action and role-playing games, and the studio continues to push those elements with its latest massively multiplayer online game Star Wars: The Old Republic, and single-player Dragon Age Origins, the spiritual successor to the classic Baldur's Gate. In this exclusive interview with GamesIndustry.biz, general manager of BioWare Dr Ray Muzyka and creative officer Greg Zeschuk discuss the maturing games industry, and how innovations in hardware such as Microsoft's Project Natal can help developers create more emotionally engaging storytelling experiences.

How can they say that Gears of War and Halo have no future because they are "murder simulators" when they have made and are still making "action....games"? If you say something like that then they should also agree that murder is still murder - whether you have a reason to do it or not, a story to tell or not -its murder! That is the purpose of a trial, you don't kill a murderer because even a murderer should be given a fair trial (hell even a rapist or child killer!). Though they are making great action and role-playing games, it still has killing - worse, it's a role playing game! At least in Halo and Gears of War you are playing a character that you have no affect on directly, but role-playing games always gives choices, that's the beauty of them.

murder simulators? right. Interactive dramas will probably more common as gaming breaks into new demographics. Games like Facade (if you have not played it, I implore you to download it), are pretty good indications of what to expect in the future..... Moreso than natal....

There's nothing about "murder simulators" in the article.

And anyway, Mass Effect is a better murder simulator than Halo or Gears. In those games, you're in a war. In ME, you're a dude that takes side quests. The decision to execute a character in BioWare's games has much more impact than shooting a Locust in Gears.

yeah, I could argue the killing in halo and gears of war is more mindless. And in bioware's game the murder is more conscience which could be worse.

And you know what's funny? Nowhere in the interview there is a mention of "murder, kill, halo, gears, simulator, have no future". And a new account for this? Pathetic.

Because TC had the genius idea of putting 'muder simulator' into his damn title, this is has already gone off topic.

so, let me get this straight ,if you kill someone in mass effect, it's OK, but if you kill someone in gears, it's murder, interesting but failed concept, 'it's not murder in our games cos our games have a storyline', well there you have it folks, killing people is fine, as long as you have a story to go with it.

You mean a Level 1 poster not only has a misleading thread title, but also used the opportunity to bash the X360's biggest franchises? :o

Im pretty sure in both games your killing aliens, so its more like an "extermination simulator" if anything

But he must be talking about the multiplayer then. I didn't know "murder" consisted of a bunch of M&M colored dudes running around a building withplasma riflesand sticky grenades..... At least not on this planet

Funny....since when is killing an enemy combatant during war (in both cases, Gears and Halo, you have an invasion and thus a defensive war) considered murder? Particularly when they're aliens?

If this is true, i'm guessing today is opposite day?

Gears and Halo aren't murder simulators. :| Gears is a melee simulator and Halo isa "dont use guns because bullets don't register all the time" simulator. Oh, and Halo is also a "aim at the air a foot away from your enemy and still get a headshot" simulator.

I have to disagree. You drag a child killer out to the woods and put a bullet in their head. End of story. They lost all rights including the right to breathe our air when they commited that crime. As far as the games are concerned, I love Bioware's games. In fact, they make some of my absolute favorite games. But I still enjoy Halo, and Gears (sometimes... when I actually get a match where people arent cheating to high heavens) and looking at the marketplace there is plenty of room for both, as well as fans of both. /shrug

They're just mad because the Halo/Gears K/D ratio is greater than Mass Effect's. Especially since in ME I died probably the most at the one part on the ice world against that one woman. Hardest part in the whole game!

Killing for governments isn't considered murder. If a soldier was tried for murder everytime he killed a man for his country then we wouldn't have to many soldiers...

[QUOTE="Tarutaru001"]http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/doctors-on-call BioWare's focus has always been storytelling within great action and role-playing games, and the studio continues to push those elements with its latest massively multiplayer online game Star Wars: The Old Republic, and single-player Dragon Age Origins, the spiritual successor to the classic Baldur's Gate.

Wow, I didn't know Jack Thompson had a gamespot account.

They're just mad because the Halo/Gears K/D ratio is greater than Mass Effect's. Especially since in ME I died probably the most at the one part on the ice world against that one woman. Hardest part in the whole game!

Omg yeah. She kept on pushing me onto the floor and i was like what the **** Then she killed. Not to mention the swarm of enemies she has that kill you fast. Misleading BTW.

Dialogue system is fan freaking tastic. One game that actually does the moral system right.
