I'm disappointed.

Call me crazy, but I love ads in open world games. Mercs 2 was pretty mediocre, but I threw it in the other day to blow **** up (fails in comparison to RFG at that, btw), and I saw a billboard for the new John Travolta flick. I dig that. It adds to the world. SR2 has it, too.
To me, I like that there are ads in games for real life things, but at the same time, only if it doesn't go overboard...I'm looking at you 2142....
It's nothing compared to the slew of ads on XBOX Live's dashboard which is weird since you pay for it.
Yeah it's silly in some games were it's forced on the game, but if it's used well like in an open world game, or it's subtle like in some games were you have a PDA and it's a Nokia phone or something, that's not too bad, it's a great source of income for devs especially when all they need to do is something simple like that.To me, I like that there are ads in games for real life things, but at the same time, only if it doesn't go overboard...I'm looking at you 2142....

It really depends on the game. Seeing a few ads around the hockey rink in NHL games or seeing an ad on a billboard in Gran Turismo is one thing, but nothing takes you out of a fantasy/unrealistic game like seeing ads for real life products. To me, I like that there are ads in games for real life things, but at the same time, only if it doesn't go overboard...I'm looking at you 2142....

I see no problem. It's earning more money for doing a similar amount of work. You think people would complain at that?
[QUOTE="Vaasman"]yeah id like to know to, surely its the other way round. more revenue for the developers:? ?
How exactly do in game advertisements equate to the death of gaming?
wayne_kar
Not caring about game quality and only caring about money.
It's not killing game developers and publishers, but it's killing gaming for me.
Stuff like this is one of the reasons why gaming is dying.

As Sheva says in RE5.
You can't be serious.
Gaming is dying because ONE ad appears in a video game? It's really not that big of a deal and I don't understand why people like you cry about it. It has no effect on GAMEPLAY, you know, the most important part of a game.
Then again, 98% of you are graphics whores so it doesn't surprise me. I bet most of the games I play have ads in them but I don't even notice, because I'm too busy actually playing my games, not looking at them.

but how does an advert in a game effect the quality. surely the extra revenue the add generate give the developer more resources to work on a higher quality game.[QUOTE="PoppaGamer"]WHO CARES???? Its not like they put a wall in the middle of a street with an ad or something. You have a game that takes place in a city. Cities have billboard ads. Yes because as we all know the best quality games come from big budget developers.
Nobody uses ads except huge casual publishers like EA or Activision, they're more than rich enough already. Devs that actually care about the GAME wouldn't sell out and use ads in the game.

i dont mind advertising in games where it feels like it fits, like nhl 09 and such, but i hate it in fictional games. i use gaems to escape reality i dont want to be palyign a game and see what mcdonalds new burger is. if you were reading a book, then in the next senetence it says "go to mcdonalds now and try our new Big Mac wrap for only $1.39!" wouldnt that feel out of place?
Edit: adsare annoyingin real life, why would i want them in my games? i can think for my self i dont think people trying to tell me what i want. if people could tihnk for them sevles maybe this world would be a better place... hmm.

Sell out? Oh god I really hate it when people use this expression. OH NOES A BUSINESS IS TRYING TO MAKE MONEY SO THEY CAN CONTINUE TO OFFER ME ENTERTAINMENT THE SELL OUTS! Oh please don't be so self-absorbed.Agreed. And advertisements such as your character actually using an Ipod or such for in game music is brilliant. :) But that only applies if you are playing a game that is suppose to be in modern times. If I was play that takes places 50 years in the past or future that would be very, very stupid.i dont mind advertising in games where it feels like it fits, like nhl 09 and such, but i hate it in fictional games. i use gaems to escape reality i dont want to be palyign a game and see what mcdonalds new burger is. if you were reading a book, then in the next senetence it says "go to mcdonalds now and try our new Big Mac wrap for only $1.39!" wouldnt that feel out of place?

Tell me something. You go into a game store and you're looking around and you see a cool game. How would you like if [insert a game series that you really like here] had a sequel that was the equivalent of a casual mini-game compilation on the Wii, and then the devs would proceed to bash the previous games in the series and hype the new one?
You wouldn't call them sell outs? Well, after all, they're just trying to run a business.

Then again proving my point. Its not the use of ads that causes people to become sell outs its the way it is handled and how the developer handles new found success. That's so irrelevant it's not even funny...:? You completely changed the argumentIn game ads are sacrifing game quality for money. They are 99% of the time out of the place and ruin immersion. Some day we will see pop ups during games that advertise iPhones or something. Just like DLC, it may not be a huge problem now but it will be in the future. If we don't do something now it may be too late.
Maybe, but as of now it's not sacrificing. So there is a gamestop banner on the wall? Who cares? Explain how the game would be better without it. In game ads is the PUBLISHER making a deal with A company for an ad. Pretty much has NOTHING to do with the developer, except for them pasting it on the wall, where they would have just thought of and made up a fake one to put anywayIn game ads are sacrifing game quality for money. Yea and there are marketing ads on the sides of buildings. Who knows maybe that building had a Gamestop ad on it now, (IIRC the game takes place in New York). This type of ads in games is alright, you may not even notice it unless you are looking for it.
sorry but I fail to see how a billboard in a racer or open world game featuring an add for pepsi over an add for a fake cola is detrimental to your gameIn game ads are sacrifing game quality for money.
