Wii may have negative effect on PS3-360 gamers

Through an email sent to website Level Up, Tyler Bleszinski, older brother of Cliff Bleszinski from Gears of War fame, expressed his thoughts on the Wii's rapidly gaining popularity and its possible effect on hardcore gamers. Apparently, he's troubled by how Nintendo is reaching its hands to casual gamers and pushing the market towards that audience.

Being a gamer himself, Tyler grew up with Zelda and other titles generally aimed at guys. With the Wii reaching millions of non-gamers, he believes that publishers might also move in the same direction. In other words, casual games could overrun deeper games.

"The NPD sales figures since November have been troubling to me as a hardcore gamer who loves new IPs and in-depth experiences... There have been umpteen stories about the scrappy little Wii wooing non-gamers and bringing in hordes of new converts to worship at the altar of Mario," he said.

"I'm not saying that the videogame industry shouldn't strive to bring in as many new people as possible," he added. Tyler told a story about how he found an old woman at the store looking for Cooking Mama and Wii Play. "If these are the type of games that become blockbusters, then you can count on other gaming companies who cater to the more hardcore gamer to promptly change direction."

Tyler strongly believes that gamers who got into the scene because of the Wii and its casual games aren't likely to get into more hardcore titles. It's difficult to imagine that the woman at the store would be playing Metroid. He continues:

If Nintendo winds up outselling the 360 and the PS3 by a wide margin, how soon will it be before we gamers are using the Sixaxis to chop up onions with in Metal Gear Mama? How long before we're frantically swinging waggle remotes for tennis, bowling and golf in Halo Sports?

I sincerely believe that bringing new people to video games is a good thing. I like seeing the business continue to grow and be even more successful, because I'm old enough to remember the videogame industry crash between the Atari 5200 and the Nintendo Entertainment System. But ultimately, going more mainstream can have unintended consequences--ones that could negatively impact the breadth and depth of the kinds of games that I love, as do millions of others.

-----------

I kind of agree and kind of don't.Yes the Wii is someone a bad thing for gaming, devs really dont care about making any games which actually take skill on the Wii,only "hardcore" game I could possibly think of on the Wii is RE4:Wii Edition...other than that the third party games are mainly "mini-game filled" titles. But,this is also bringing alot more casuals...and we all were casuals at one point, and those casual could possibly turn into hardcore gamers.O.o I dont know what to think of the Wii situation...very confusing.Your thoughts?

OLD by Internet time, and this guy isn't Cliffy B. Truth be told, he has his opinions, and I disagree. I think he's overreacting, and his beliefs have no proof.

The whol "Mini-game" concept is out of control here...

I mean who'd think Fire Emblem can't be deep cause the game's battle system is you lose one character and death is eternal, or who'd think a game like Battalion Wars (the GC game was very deep, and the Handheld games are phenominal) with Online play won't be deep, like any RTS you have your weaknesses and stregnths with units.

Hell iet's forget about SSBB, I mean everyone think's it's easy, but truth be told Online will make them realize how deep it is. The thing I ask is, will you take the challenge, naysayers?

Oh but of course, just cause Wii Brain Academy comes to Wii, it's suddenly crap, because other people who don't like what you do suddenly shouldn't have games made for them. I mean, who'd think puzzle solving, and things like that couldn't be goo for some people?

Lest we all forget again that Strikers is deep and easy for both, it's in the middle, but certainly isn't some mini-game last I checked. Did no one think that MP 3 won't be epic, fantastic, and just another great game to the Metroid series? Retro could be the better "Rare" it seems, with 2 AAA titles, and after this game, we may see many more "hardcore" games....

but what am I to say? Trauma Center is TOO easy... /sarcasm

WarioWare, and Wii Sports are the ONLY good games on Wii... pfft... whatever

No we shouldn't care, he's a nobody. Like us:shock:. But he makes an interesting point. If more casuals continue to support the Wii. Then stores like Gamestop will be flooded with mediocre casual titles as opposed to hardcore. I don't know about you but I want a lot of cool epic games. Not the 6th sequel to Cooking mama.

LoL at the Cooking Mama comment, but agreed.Maybe the 360 and PS3 will keep around the hardcore titles...if the Wii doesnt take up all the people first.

In years gone by many genres which were considered to be too dry have died out. Games like Mario, Zelda and other more action oriented games replaced them because they were bigger sellers. Later on the creation of the FPS and RTS genre really changed the type of games being released on the PC. This is nothing new and if the Wii does succeed at what it's doing it won't be the first time i have seen the style of gaming I enjoy become near non-existant. Just learn to live with it.

I am tired of seeing cliffyB catching flack for something his sports annalist know nothing brother said.

Cliffyb his said on many occasions that he owns a wii that it is fun and Nintendo is heading in the right direction, he even said he would like to take a crack at designing a wii game because the inherent challenge it poses to developers.

no his brothers opinion is not his stop acting like it is. this means nothing.

But it's not as though other people don't have the same opinion as his. I don't think this is so much to validify his brother as a video game expert (which he isn't) but as a segway to talk about an issue that obviously other people outside of the SW forums have become aware of.

So suddenly it's ok for one company who's entire focus to shift, and the "hardcore" fans still pass judgment on the opposing side? That's laughable. It's called hypocrisy.

Why does it matter so much to people that it is expanding the market, im pretty sure every one here was already playing games before the Wii came out. Should we really want a system that is trying to do more to pull in non gamers, or a system that gives more to those who truly see the joy of playing games without gimmicks and various things. Do you suspect that the non gamers, and casuals will start to play more advanced and epic games,I personally doubt it.

I personally want a system that focuses on my needs as a gamer, rather than those who dont play games.

I agree with Cliffy's bro, Wii is hindering the natural progression of the video game industry with it's significantly underpowered hardware. This results in worse graphics and textures, enemy AI, and most important of all, PHYSICS. The only thing it's advancing is motion sensing capabilites, the way we play games. I dislike the Wii for this reason.

Sheep can come on here and say "buh-buh teh PS2 was weak!" The thing is, the hardware performance between the PS2 and the GC/Xbox wasn't that big, the way it is between the PS3/360 and the Wii.

I don't care too much of who it focuses on, so much as I enjoy it to. However his statement was it wasn't advancing the industry, and thus the points I mentioned proved him wrong. It had nothing to do with my personal preference. Just the statement he said, and me proving him wrong on that term.

The thing I find dubious is the thought that this is somehow new, this trend of developers just finding a trend and copying it ad nauseum.
The only difference now is the trend is casual, non-games instead of sandbox games, or fighting games, or SHMUPs or RPGs or platformers or so on.

Eitherway,theresultisthesame:mediocrity.

Yeah, I agree, for this to even be true, wouldnt the blame lie with Microsoft and especially Sony aswell for making crap that no one buys and thus allowing the Wii to become the market leader, that whole article was just stupid :(
