Back at BlizzCon, Blizzard told us they were working on a series of animated short films set in the Overwatch universe, to be released closer to the game's launch. Well now that we have an official launch date, the shorts are going to start rolling in—along with a variety of comic books. The first short is called 'Recall' and centers around Overwatch's scientist gorilla Winston, including a look at his origin story. You can watch the full thing above, which is oddly hosted on the Xbox YouTube channel.

It's great to finally see what Blizzard has been cooking up, and incredibly exciting that the quality level hasn't dropped since the announcement cinematic at BlizzCon in 2014. The theatrical teaser that was shown in some movie theaters before Star Wars Episode 7 was an encouraging peek behind the curtain, but Recall shows that Blizzard still understands how to tell a whole story in just seven minutes. This is also the first morsel of new story information we've seen about Overwatch for a while, which Blizzard told us it's making up as they go along in an interview last December.

This is first part of the movie. More are coming. Overwatch releases on 24th May 2016 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

This was fantastic! Blizzard continues to make brilliant animated shorts for their games. When they put out that first Overwatch trailer I started fantasizing about Blizzard making an animated series out of it. If Blizzard started making feature length animated films that they’d give Pixar and Dreamworks a run for their money. :D Overwatch has looked like Pixar since the start or atleast the first time it was shown at Blizzcon. Looking forward to the other shorts, especially the Tracer one.

That was pretty lame. Was hoping it would be as good as the Warcraft 3 scenes.

As my buddy works for blizzard I've had Overwatch beta since the first press release and honestly haven't played it that much, it really is just a TF2 with some new ideas thrown on top of it. I want to play a shooter I play cs:go or Insurgency..

This is heading into the DOTA direction that we all feared and knew it would.

BTW these seem like gender alternatives to existing heroes, not new heroes. Nevermind. The imgur link clearly shows some new designs altogether.

I still think Blizzard should make movies. They could, but didn't with the Warcraft movie. Instead we'll get corny real actors mashed with cgi making everything looking fake. If only Blizzard themselves would make the movie, it would probably have been awesome instead..

Most full length animated movies are Pixar quality in terms of animation these days, so an 8 minute trailer managing it is hardly impressive.

Nope, far more impressed by the Ratchet & Clank remake been actual Pixar quality animation while in GAMEPLAY. I'm also expecting this from Nintendo and the NX.

Probably quite likely we can see some of these guys in the shorts, graphic novel, and digital comics. Extended OW universe hype! I have to wonder how many of them will actually make the roster in the future. Fun to think about. White hair black girl is ain't gender swap neither skin! The blue visor made me think of a long-haired Nightwing but Kai Leng could be a dead ringer. Really cool to get a look at some possibilities, though. Some of these agents may already be dead. Makes me wonder if they're old rejected concept designs. None of them have been confirmed in any way, this is just a list of Overwatch agents that may be potential heroes that show up in the latest short they released. I loved seeing them, that being said. Digital Comics coming before release, more shorts, and a graphic novel later in year. Well, really excited to see if any of these end up being future heroes!

Cool if true. Very cool. Too late for the Warcraft movie, though.

having played the beta i can confirm this game will be a disaster upon release. probably the most casual shooter in recent memory, but then again who better to make a casual moneygrab than blizzard?
