If it was a male no one would have complained.

It's one pose you can choose out of dozens. The game is T rated and you can kill/maim people infinite times.

I find the pose very bad-ass and not over sexualized. Very depressing move Blizzard.

Any WoW player can tell you that their fans are fucking morons, and Blizzard lacks the spine to stop catering to every dumb opinion that makes it's way to their forum.

Cry babies strike again. The guy lets his daughter play the game, who is too young to play this game (Rated T for teen,,, not E for everyone) and then complains about character posses. First world problems.

Not sure how feminists and "SJWs" are at fault. If you cared about the butt pose, then you should direct your salt at Blizzard. It's not like anyone forced them to make the change. They made that kind of creative decision on their own. Oh wait, artistic value on the internet only seems to apply when you put in more TNA instead of doing the opposite.

She is not too young. Any child can play T rated games if they have their parents consent. The same idea applies to PG-13 movies. Also, you're on a forum getting outraged over the removal of a video game butt pose. First world problems.

A more accurate title: "Developer listens to feedback and make changes to in-development game"

Why emphasise how many people complained? If only one person reports a bug does that mean they shouldn't fix the bug? Have you ever thought the reason they changed it was because they agreed with the criticism? There already is a character who has poses like that, so why do they need another one? This part of the complaint I feel is the key "What about this pose has anything to do with the character you’re building in tracer?" and maybe that's all there is to it, the pose was out of character so they removed it.

....It's a pose. How an earth are you even going to attempt to argue that something so mundane is contradictory to character conventions when it neither affirms nor negates anything regarding her personality?

Claims of offensive material are as good as threats. All it takes is one person's accusation of misogyny to destroy a dev's career. Examples of developer behavior bending to the will of a single dissatisfied voice among many satisfied ones is an obvious case of coercion and veiled threats. There's a name for ideologically controlling the lives and experiences of the many by throttling a centralized power: tyranny of the minority.

SJWs always seek to control the narrative by leveraging content that they may or may not believe fits into how they choose to frame said narrative. This is exactly how people like Adrienne Shaw seek to "disrupt market [forces]" (her words) so as to muscle out everyone else's view aside from their own.

Reflecting the characters personality is the entire point of there being poses, it's non-verbal communication. By your logic they might as well not have poses fullstop.

Here's what one of the developers had to say about this.

Well, that escalated quickly…

While I stand by my previous comment, I realize I should have been more clear. As the game director, I have final creative say over what does or does not go into the game. With this particular decision, it was an easy one to make—not just for me, but for the art team as well. We actually already have an alternate pose that we love and we feel speaks more to the character of Tracer. We weren’t entirely happy with the original pose, it was always one that we wrestled with creatively. That the pose had been called into question from an appropriateness standpoint by players in our community did help influence our decision—getting that kind of feedback is part of the reason we’re holding a closed beta test—but it wasn’t the only factor. We made the decision to go with a different pose in part because we shared some of the same concerns, but also because we wanted to create something better.

We wouldn’t do anything to sacrifice our creative vision for Overwatch, and we’re not going to remove something solely because someone may take issue with it. Our goal isn’t to water down or homogenize the world, or the diverse cast of heroes we’ve built within it. We have poured so much of our heart and souls into this game that it would be a travesty for us to do so.

We understand that not everyone will agree with our decision, and that’s okay. That’s what these kinds of public tests are for. This wasn’t pandering or caving, though. This was the right call from our perspective, and we think the game will be just as fun the next time you play it.

If it isn’t, feel free to continue sharing your concerns, thoughts, and feedback about this and other issues you may have with the game, please just keep the discussion respectful.

Thanks,

jeffre

It's ironic that people like you feel you have the right to dictate how a developer should make their game while simultaneously spewing nonsense about how developers are bending to the will of SJWs. If you truly cared about creative vision then you would accept that removing the pose was their decision, not yours.

The record will show that I dictate(d) nothing to the devs, but rather SJWs dictated to them, and they felt pressured to respond. In turn, I respond to the coercive gerrymandering with a critique.

The burden is upon you to establish how an infinitely abstract pose affirms or negates anything about the character, and not upon a generic damage-controlling-dev-response to explain the issue away for you and conveniently neutralize both sides of the issue while still supporting your own. Consider for a moment the pose in question: what does it affirm or negate beyond what the person who made the complaint claims it does? In which case, how can you argue that it ever stood as a contradiction to what devs were truly aiming for if it would have never been changed save for this emotionally charged complaint? Your tune's well has been permanently poisoned since the only details that can be proven are that someone saw the character's butt-crack, claimed offense to the devs, and evoked a direct response from them as a result. Every other claim made that attempts to contextualize, rationalize, or outright deny that flow of events is a posteriori.

Their vision has been fucked with by fearmongers. Don't even bother trying to put yourself in their corner as a means of distracting from what is a clear case of coercion.

So the developer says that they wanted to make the change, are happy with the change, and have no plans to revert the change. But they should revert the change simply because you and a few other people complained about it? How do you not see the irony here? If they add the pose back in then that would be giving into fear mongering.

Yes the persons complaint was a bit overboard with sensationalism, but that doesn't mean they were wrong. The pose is clearly out of character and even the devs agree. Why don't you try to prove that the pose is in character? And if it is about people being offended by bums like you're trying to claim, then why aren't the complaining about the other female characters poses?

Why don't you just respect their creative vision and accept that they can change the character however they want?

Repeating the same phrases isn't going to make them anymore valid--or any less invalid.

"Your tune's well has been permanently poisoned since the only details that can be proven are that someone saw the character's butt-crack, claimed offense to the devs, and evoked a direct response from them as a result. Every other claim made that attempts to contextualize, rationalize, or outright deny that flow of events is a posteriori."

For your argument to actually have any weight, you have to prove that a) the pose has an objective nature relative to the character that can be meaningfully linked to the devs response to the complaint, and b) that the devs would have changed the pose regardless of the antecedents (which would beg the question of how that pose made it past the planning stage in the first place). Neither of which you can do. Maybe if the pose weren't so milquetoast and objectively meaningless, you'd have a leg to stand on, but as it is you're up the creek on this one.

But hey, congrats on hitting the strawman stage this early in the game. This has never been about not allowing the devs to "change the character however they want", but rather calling bullshit on their attempt to rationalize the changes to their vision--as a result of pandering to a minority--by using the game's general audience as a smokescreen.

@toast_burner: Depressing times where 1 random voice is apparently considered representative over the entire female population.

It doesn't help that their response seemed nothing more than catering to a sensitive random person over there. Oh and the magazine Easter egg gag being covered up before didn't help matters either.

Why do you keep playing at this offence angle when the real issue is about the pose being out of character? ironic that you accuse me of using strawman arguments when that's all you're doing.

You seem to have this delusion that animations and character backstory are just something that magically appears. No an artist put a lot of time into crafting the character to be a certain way, and according to that artist being sexualised is not the way they wanted to write that character. And again if you think poses are meaningless then why would they exist at all, and why would different characters have different poses?

I'll repeat my question again that was in the edit. If the issue is people being offended by a woman's bum, then why would they be perfectly ok with a different female character having a similar animation? Since they are only complaining about one character, and the developers are only making changes to that one character as a result of those complaints, then obviously the issue is not the bum but how it clashes with the personality of the specific character.

Whatever. As long as Blizz didn't do it because of 1 person complaining, then whatever.

If there's one thing I enjoy, I always enjoy seeing a weak ass developer getting backlash for just a lousy sexy pose by there own creations. A creator shouldn't listen to criticism, an art is an art to the creator and if you're getting backlash by critics, then you have no confidants in your own arts. Just another weak developer who should've told them to get a life.

This is an odd thing to say since much more people are complaining about the pose being removed. The developers are sticking to their creative vision regardless of what some neckbeards on the internet say about it.

Here's a good article about the subject http://www.pointandclickbait.com/2016/03/developers-creative-freedom/

I think we've created an SJWCulture. It's like rape culture only the things being taken by force are artistic integrity and creativity.

Creating feigned controversy through a perrcieved suppression gets people invested.

Sadly, just hinting at feminist intervention will get a billion frothy mouthed 14 year olds, who've never touched a woman (motive), angry. Led by there ideological god Totalbiscuit will no doubt encourage attacks woman like a radical preacher - occasionally saying "tut tut that ain't right", as to not come across as an asshole, even though he's actually been coming across as an asshole for years.

All the while Blizzard rub hands, giggling.
