OP makes no sense. It doesn't sell well because there are so many great indies on PC. Of corse it'll sell better on a system with only a tiny fraction of the indie market oO

This game looks fun. I want to try it out on Switch after I finished Steamworld Dig 2. You played it, right Cup?

That's the excuse now?

First it's "Nintendo fans don't buy third party/indie games." yet when they do and it's "Nintendo fans buy anything?"

No pleasing you guys, is there? What with your Fox News/Breitbart style goalpost shifting?

@ArchoNils2: It could also be that there's an Audience for these types of games on Switch and not on Steam.

Steam users are exposed to THOUSANDS of these games per day with many of them being quite shit. One screenshot of this game would likely have the average Steam user not bat an eye, but to Switch users who don't see this stuff every day they'll likely pick it up cause "It's like that one Nintendo game I like to play".

Nintendo Eshop is of far higher quality. Not news, but Valve simply do not give a shit. Couple that with the ability to steal a game like this in all of 10 minutes, you got a soup of diarrhea.

I mean it's no surprise that a Zelda-like action-adventure game is selling on the system home to Zelda but these indie games get way better exposure on Nintendo Switch.

Thousands of indie games are released at a constant rate on Steam. It's a highly competitive marketplace and it's very hard to succeed without a backbone of hype and a marketing push. Whereas on Nintendo Switch, these games get a front and center view not only in the e-shop itself through new releases (which is a far smaller number than on Steam) but also through the news channel which highlights all new releases weekly.

As Cup said, the eshop is more curated than Steam so it's easier to see what games come out weekly for the platform, hence why smaller games with less hype and marketing are getting more visibility on the Switch.

I serious;y doubt that this game has suffered from large scale piracy, it's more likely that it's lost in the ocean of indie games on Steam.

Personally I've never even heard of it, now that I have, I still don't care.

I agree with you that it is much harder to get into the eShop than it is to get into Steam, but there is plenty of people buying games on Pc.

So I guess you agree with me? Yes, on PC you have a lot of Zelda clones and that way you can chose whatever clone you like best. If you only have one option, it's natural this one thing gets more sales. Not having the option to get another similar product does not equal having an audience on that system. If there were more Zelda clones and better ones like Oceanhorn, this game would also do worse on the Switch. Heck, it would be even worse if the Switch had the VC and had original Zelda games on it.

yeah that's true, with a limited amount of games and them actually being visible, the Switch does give the games themself a much better chance to sell than Steam for example. I guess it is a mix of more exposure and less option that leads to the better sales.

I don't like the protagonist's look and how much it seems to lend from Zelda but it does look like a solid game.

Never heard of it. Looks fun. I think it's easier to discover this stuff on the eshop because it's less cluttered and doesn't get a flood of random never-heard-of games every day. I'm more inclined to look at these games just to see what they are on the eshop at this time. Steam - I go in, buy what I planned on, and get out

Sadly, this is a well-documented problem. Steam Greenlight and Steam Direct have allowed an unrelenting flood of crap - 7,000 games were released last year alone - drowning out the the gems in a sea of asset flips and half-arsed clone games, and giving them very little time and room to establish themselves. I have read complaints from these indies to this very effect.

And Valve's response to all this? Silence and more algorithms. Bloody Hell. What is it with these big tech companies and bloody algorithms? Do they think numbers and maths and code are magical and will resurrect the dead and cure Huntington's or something?

The moral of this story is: there is no substitute for curation. Just wish Valve would get this fact through their thick friggin skulls.

Switch has around 12 games, Steam gets around 1.000 games every day.

May seem like I'm bashing Switch here, but it's the other way around: It's steam that floods all the good games with crap, not giving honest developers or games a change to shine in the light.

Having said that though: We've all seen how Wii for example got flooded with crap, so this really isn't a unique case for Steam.

Don't forget PSN gets flooded by crap like Life of Black Tiger too.... So yeah.

@R4gn4r0k: That's not to say that Nintendo Switch is safe from low quality games like Vroom in the Night Sky, but certainly there hasn't been anything like Black Tiger or Skylight Freerange 2. E-Shop is not blemish free but from using the device myself, I can see first-hand how smaller indie games are giving handsome visibility on the storefront and news page on the system.

Seems to be a pattern for now, I remember how one of my favorite XOne survival games Flame in the Flood also mentioned the incredible sales on Switch that easily surpassed the prior Xbox and PS4 versions. As someone who enjoyed that game, I was thrilled to see the response on the Switch Platform and hopefully it gets a nice sequel on all platforms in the future. I think good, Rogue-like games with high replayability are a good fit for the Switch and the fact that a lot of those games are not very graphically intensive helps:

"Indeed, it’s fair to say it’s had its best ever day on any console since we’ve been publishing it, beating any other format we have launched on. It’s done just under half of our first full month forecast in a day "

https://www.dualshockers.com/the-flame-in-the-flood-nintendo-switch-ps4/

edit: took more time to read the article, I should quote the next paragraph as well.....that's why I don't like quick quoting sometimes you miss context(the point remains though, many multiplatform games sell very well now on the Switch):

"Worth noting, Curve Digital came on as the Publisher after the launch of the original PC and Xbox One release, but before The Flame in the Flood: Complete Edition came out on PlayStation 4. So while this isn’t indicative of the best one-day sale for the entire game’s history, Nintendo Switch has (at the least) broken the record for 2017 sales — including when it launched on PS4. It is certainly good news for the burgeoning indie market on Nintendo Switch."

I had never heard about it before I saw it on the Switch eshop. Looked a lot like A Link to the Past, I thought, so it being popular on a Nintendo system isn't that mindblowing..

I can understand Valve's hand off approach.

But honestly I wouldn't mind them doing something more to highlight good games and bury the bad games (zero effort games) a bit more.

I agree with you. I understand Valve wanting to make their store a platform where ANYONE can have a voice, but of course when everyone is speaking, it's harder for those who have something to say to be heard. :(

@Enragedhydra said:

Every game on Steam has some playtime. Hopefully the good ones rise to the surface. Understandably this will not always happen but more often then not the good games will surface.

Of course that's true but even good user reviews aren't going to be quite enough to break the mold and sell as well as those that generate the same hype as games with press coverage or streamer attention. And not all games really lend themselves to that audience. There are games out there that are simply better for streaming which is a great factor in strong sales for PC indie games. Of course, good games do end up surfacing either way but it's still telling that even the good games like Steamworld Dig 2 (which has 10/10 on Steam user reviews) has sold 10 times more on Switch than PC (Source). This is really an audience thing. Steam has such a massive pool of games that it's hard to make a statement with positive reception alone. Image & Form themselves have confirmed that Steam is becoming more and more like the app store in terms of quantity. The games that do make the largest splash on Steam are usually the ones with some kind streaming, Youtube or online community built around them.

I'm glad these games are doing okay for the Switch, but you don't have to buy EVERY indie roguelike and homegrown RPG out there. Switch has enough games for it to where you don't have to act like you're starving.

Obviously people will buy it more on the Switch where It's more visible due to smaller selection.

Well exposure is definitely a big reason.

Steam has a crap ton of games on it, and games come out way more often than on the eShop.

Still though, good for them! I got to what I assume is the final boss and quit for now for whatever reason. It's not a bad game, but I do admit it's not quite there if we are talking the quality of the closest franchise to the game: 2D Zelda. Understandable based on budget and all that, but at least they do some fairly unique things that make it stand out at least.

When consoles like switch have no games worth playing, the fan base gets desperate and will buy any garbage game like blossom tales.

It is the same reason companies are desperate to pump out anything for launches. They know the game will get decent sales because nothing else is worth getting.

This is NOT a win for anyone. It just proves the switch has no games that even trash indies can make a decent buck.

I serious;y doubt that this game has suffered from large scale piracy, it's more likely that it's lost in the ocean of indie games on Steam.

Personally I've never even heard of it, now that I have, I still don't care.

Yep, I look through the Steam store daily and this is the first time I've ever even heard of the game.
