Right. And HD sales are what percent of DVD sales again? 2%? 1%? Contact me when Bluray or HD-DVD actually go mainstream. Because if that happens and if Bluray wins (if there's a clear winner) and if that happens significantly early enough before the end of the generation to make a real difference and if the PS3 isn't too far behind to catch up then maybe Bluray will make a difference. Five "if"s and a "maybe". So don't be so confident.

The PS3 will have nothing to do with the success or failure of blu-ray. Even with the ps2 selling 100 million units (of course some of them were 2nd and 3rd time buyers after their machine finally crapped out after years of gaming) had no impact of dvd sales. Even if the ps3 sells 20 milion, it will be a very small percentage of how many actual players are sold. And from the looks of it, the attach rate for movies on the ps3 is small, so it proves to be even less of an impact.

Over 130 million dvd players have been sold in the last 10 years, with over 10 million being sold still this year alone. That, coupled with a much higher attach rate for dvd's, show what little impact ps3 will have on the decision.

Now, the 360 hd-dvd add on player does count, since those don't play games and are bought specifically for watching movies.

I don't care who wins, but your overestimating the success of blu-ray from ps3 sales.

I think we should get mad at the movie studios for picking sides and not allowing us to chose ALL movies in either format. Then let the choice for players (blu-ray or hd-dvd) decide which would win. If that were the case, we all know who would win though. Unless blu-ray players were to drop in price and sell for the same as hd-dvd players that is.

There just are not enough advantages to blu-ray for even a movie buff like me to pay a premium for the same quality picture.

The Blu-Ray will be the next main stream format and when it reaches the 200 gig disc it could be used for other things other than games and movies. There is a information data base that several years ago was released on CD's about evry 3 months, then the size became so large that it went to DVD for a short time until this format became to small for the data (it would take about 20 or 25 DVD's for the data to fit). Now the only way to get this data base is via a highspeed internet connection. Now with Blu-Ray it could fit on a couple of disc.

The Sony CEO already admitted that the best blu-ray will do is stalemate HD-DVD.

I love it when Cows still think something will succeed even when the Sony CEO says it will fail  The ultimate denial.

You must take into account that increased sales of the PS3 actually hurt it unless it has a high software attachment rate.

its true that blu-ray has a massive lead (in a relatively small market), but HD-DVD is still annoyingly having some hold out victories. Paramount and Dream Works are both HD-DVD exclusive (http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/patterson/8538).

i hate this stupid format war.

Blue-Ray this, HD-DVD that? What the hell is everyone talking about? I remember Gamespot.com having article regarding a possible stalemate between the two formats. People are getting into HD now, but not everyone has a HDTV. How many times are we going to hear that by the time next year rolls around everything on cable will be high-def? A HD movie is about $30 minimum. That price alone is enough for most consumers to favor DVDs. I think Blue-Ray and HD-DVD will be surpassed by something else because technologyis changing too fast.

The fight between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is like the fight between Xbox and Gamecube. The real big dog in DVD (like PS2 was)

Just because BR is beating HD-DVD does not mean its successful since its goal is to replace DVD as the standard disc.

Yes. When your console plays bluray and bluray is a success people will buy the console and that will drive software sales. Also games go onto the bluray disc which fits much more data. Uncharted uses 23gb of data. You would have had to put it on 3 dvd discs.

The only problem is, once the BR player is less than $200 it kind of beat the incentive for someone to buy it as a BR player.

2 Big facts you are overlooking :

1) Sony exec's themselves have said that the HD war is currently at a stalemate with no clear winner.

2) Last month Sony was currently giving away 15 free blu-ray movies with the purchase of a ps3... that's pushing those numbers up just a little.

so apparently video game systems are all about movies. funny. thought they were about video games. i guess only nintendo and microsoft think that way now.

It doesn't matter if it is or isn't. Non-gaming consumers might see that as negative point because it is "tacked on" to a game system. Regardless of how good it is, non-gamers want a player that fits in with the rest of their setups.

The fact of the matter is that PS3 and Blu-Ray need eachother to sell. If they were separated nobody would play either.
