I look at Blue Dragon as a game like Dragon Quest a classic jRPG thats why I dont get why the score is so low. Both games are similar, both have characters that could have used some more development, both have crappy stories.rzepak
Here is the difference.
Dragon Quest is a game from long line of traditional RPG series. Fans are so dedicated to it's tradition, keeping up with that tradition is the goal of any Dragon Quest sequel.
Going to full 3D with detailed character alone is something fans didn't accept right away, however Level 5 did excellent job at completely maintaining the traditional feel of the game while changing the graphical look to current date.
That's why gameplay had to be really old school like Dragon Quest II old school.
Also Dragon Quest VIII had excellent graphic and really showed off classical Akira Toriyama design. Also it was on PS2 and didn't have any technical problems like slow down.
Not only that, the story itself was a unique. It was unique because it was making fun of RPG tradition, especially it's own. The story didn't drag on without intention. It was dragged on with purpose and that alone made it amusing.
Despite the simple gameplay, Dragon Quest has deep strategic battles and by giving each character unique set of ability, it really makes you become more tactical and grow each character with individual strength. Also the balance of enemies were perfectly done, giving itself great pacing of not being too easy nor being too difficult.
In those aspects, Dragon Quest VIII accomplished itself to perfection, which Blue Dragon unfortunately failed nor had that tradition to follow.
