according to the NPD, Bluray is now being dominated by HD DVD.

CT. 9 | UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif.-HD DVD set-tops have reclaimed their dominance over Blu-ray standalone players, according to weekly NPD Group unit sales figures cited by Toshiba. (source video business)

HD DVD players began outselling Blu-ray models starting in mid-September and regained a year-to-date lead of a little over 50% through the rest of the month, said Jodi Sally, Toshiba VP of marketing of digital A/V products.

Year to date, according to NPD figures she cited, HD DVD players command 53% of sales; Blu-ray players, 44%; dual format players, 3%.

She acknowledged several Blu-ray weekly victories in the run-up to home theater installer conference CEDIA, but she told attendees at Tuesday's DVD Forum conference, that Blu-ray victory was short lived. At the time of CEDIA in early September, Sony executives said that the launch of the company's $499 models, which marked the cheapest available BD set-tops to date, helped boost their August sales.

"When new models hit stores there will be a surge in demand. There were some weeks where we lagged," said Sally. "But overall HD DVD continues to dominate."

Toshiba began launching its series of third generation HD DVD players in September. Its new entry-level model, the $299 HD-A3 is beginning to hit shelves in October.

Sally also talked up HD DVD strength within PC drives. Toshiba estimates that 5 million HD DVD drives for desktops and notebooks will be sold during fiscal 2008. She believes that should make the format competitive with the Playstation 3, which was nearing 2 million units sold in the U.S. through the summer. HD DVD laptops are closing in on a relatively attractive $1,000 price point, likely fueling the retail movement.

Its pretty funny how toshiba actually cites the NPD while sony is still in the habit of pulling numbers out of their ass and making things up....they will never learn to stop looking like fools. Such was the case when claiming they were winning standalone consoles in september, when the NPD clearly favors HDDVD

PS3 doesnt count as its not being counted by the NPD...are you going to flipflop when toshiba sells 2x as many HD DVD laptops next year as PS3s this year and next year combined? Clearly its only a matter of time before HD DVD dominates. HD DVD players are selling more discs per unit, because more movie watchers are buying them... the charts reviewed by sony themselves show a sharp decline in total blu ray units compared to HD DVD heating up. Its very foolish to assume bluray even has a chance at this point. Stubborn companies and sore losers like Sony and Disney will keep it alive for some time though.

FYI.. Ill be watching transformers in HDDVD next week.. exclusives FTW.

This is actually pretty bad when you consider HDDVD had a headstart and is like $200 cheaper and is only ahead in standalone players by 6% in America. Thats also not including PS3 sales.
And anywhere in the world Bluray movies are outselling HDDVDs.

i wouldnt say blu ray is winnin, just looks like its winning because of the ps3

this was expected was it not. both formats offer basically the same quality of movies, yet one is half the price of the other from the beginning. now you see bluray players at 500 bucks and hd*dvd at like 300 bucks, and going down.

now what person would think a 500 dollar player would defeat a $300 player, thats nonsense, when both basically offer the same quality. i personally hope hd-dvd wins, because for one, its cheaper, and seeing when i would by one they likely be worth the price of a good dvd recorder.

Actually, the primary reason HD-DVD players are cheaper is because it is a MASSIVE loss leader for them. This is actually bad overall as most the companies will not produce a loss leader piece of hardware, it's not in their best interest, so you're stuck with a tiny number of electronic brands supporting it. That's why more guys are producing blu-ray players, they can actually make some money selling them.

Nope, they cost nearly as much to make as Blu-ray players (don't confuse the cost savings on the discs with the players).

This is just one indicator, but blyu-ray software sales(not counting games) has been increasing ever since the ps3 can out, while HD has been much slower, almost stagnant. In the movie market, like the games one, software sales are what really counts.

Expect BR sales to increase a lot by this year's end with the Ps3 priced at 399.

Well, ticket sales for movies are up - which makes going to the theaters the BEST choice for video gaming! Thats what your "point" implies. Successful movie sales do not translate to successful video game sales. If anything, you are proving the PS3 is only good as a media player, not a video game system.

yeah thats what I hear a lot in movie forums. Apparently some of the biggest retailers in Europe and Australia carry only Bluray movies. And in America many retailers give more space to Blurays(target/bestbuy/BB). Hopefully the format war will end after this holiday season.

Sales of Blu-ray discs for the first six months of 2007 totaled 1.6 million units, compared with 795,000 HD DVD discs sold in the same time frame. During its first week of release alone, Standard-Def DVD edition of '300' sold 5.10 million

Entire Blu-ray catalogue 6 months 2007= 1.6m

Entire HD-DVD catalogue 6 months 2007= 795k

300 "the movie" DVD in 1 week = 5.1m

Paramount dropped BR for HD-DVD too. Even if they took a payoff to do so, they still dropped the format. BR and HD are far behind DVD which has alot of life left in it, and i would say BR might have a lead, but the eventual winner is far from clear.

exactly when you include the PS3 blu-ray is kicking HD DVD's butt... Plus who cares about standalone players??? The Comopanies care about one thing and that's how the discs sale and currently the disc sale are whooping up on HD DVD... That means more companies will only work with the blu-ray.

OK so let's say that Toshiba does sell 2x's as many laptops as Sony does PS3's, but last time I checked Sony makes laptops and desktops too which will have what, oh yea Blu-Ray Players. So there goes that argument.

Also the NPD numbers only include stand alone players, since laptops, PS3's and the like aren't stand alone, they aren't included. But we all know that when you include those items the Blu-Ray capable devices have a far larger amount of market penetration.

Also the HD-DVD has more exclusives then Blu-Ray. Umm what, Buena Vista, Disney, Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, New Line, Cinema, Sony, and Warner Bros support Blu-Ray and Sony, including MGM/Columbia Tristar, Disney, including Miramax/Touchstone, and 20th Century Fox are exclusive.

Oh yea and Paramount changed to Blu-Ray but both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas reserve the right to still release on Blu-Ray, why, because they are two of the biggest names in Film and they both believe that Blu-Ray is superior. Michael Bay also tried to do the same thing but realized he was not that important and wants to stay around long enough to direct Transformers two.

So yes I am going to defend Blu-Ray because I have a vested interest in the Blu-Ray format winning.

dude... what are you smoking, HD DVD is winning. Its out selling standalone bluray units.. bluray is leading software due to the flood of PS3s that are pretty much useless for anything but playing bluray movies. Next year toshiba is forecasted to sell 2x as many HD DVD read notebooks then PS3s sold this year... you do the math, if standalone sales are already up... and 10 million additional HD DVD players flood the market, guess who will be far ahead?

:>, I can't believe the level of fanboyism in this post. Absolutely blind fanboyism. The denial is just too hard to see and not laugh. The thread is about SOFTWARE sales!!!! yes the Blu-Ray is winning by a landslide, just accept it and admit it. Blu-Ray is winning this year and it will only continue to win more because the PS3's aren't going to stop selling all of sudden. We have not even see strong PS3 sales because the amazing PS3 titles have not even hit the shelves yet, so guess fanboy? next year the Blu-Ray sales are going to even double or tripple. HD DVD is not winning right now and future isn't too promising for it, but that's just the way I see it.

The HD-DVD group likes to point out that they are out selling stand alone blu-ray players. Well I don't care how much that is true. The PS3 is a blu-ray player. Even if only half of PS3 owners bought or rented Blu-ray movies it still means Blu-ray is doing better. It also means production cost will go down faster and that Stand Alone blu-ray players will just continue to get betterand more affordable.

So it is just blind to say that the PS3 is not part of the blu-ray sales.6 million consoles sold means 6 million Blu-ray players sold. You just get the benafit of the PS3 playing games first and movies second, and it playes them well.
