Procedural synthesis is what will be the future for gaming.  Games the size of PS1 games with the level of detail of the average next gen title.  .kkrieger  is just one small example of what this is all about.  Check this out and download the beta(demo) of what it's all about.  All done and only takes up 95kb of space.  I feel sorry for all you cows that have bought into this rubbish of BluRay being NEEDED for next gen gaming.  Give this tech a little more time and you'll be seeing games the size of Oblivion taking up far less than what it already clocked in at...

Yah, now developers will need at least 12 or 16 years of education.

think of oblivion and then add 10x more content in it, wouldn't that improve oblivion, Blu-ray has potential, the only reason you are bashing it is because its on ps3

maybe on the PC, but digital distribution of entire games is still very rare on Consoles. Besides, Internet will get Faster, but games will also get larger.

Sorry but both MS and Sony will probably be using HD formats for media purposes.  Whats the point of using procedural synthesis when they can fit raw data on to a blu-ray or HD-DVD disc?

So either way it will probably be the future of gaming if it wins the format war.

Because you have dail-up or DSL wont matter now, they will have to adopt to faster methods...I`ve heard this from some of the top people in sales and marketing, that internet is the future of buying, selling, and everything else...

Give this tech a little more time? I bet if I wait 50 years, the games can be loaded directly from my brain. Should I hold off on gaming until then? For either this generation or the next, I believe BluRay will be the format of choice.

I prefer having one game, on a single disc. It's 2007 and I think that is a reasonable expectation.

Digital music is widely available now via iTunes and multiple other sources, yet CD's still account for almost 85% of music sales. Why would movies be any different?

Blu-ray has nothing to do with graphics or "depth" of a game.

I could care less about Blu Ray and HD DVD. I have already invested too much in my collection of over 300 DVD's to suddenly just replace all of those with some new, unproven format that i dont need yet. Hell i dont even have HDTV yet because they, like the PS3 are too expensive right now. Blu Ray has potential, but right now everything is fine so if it aint broke why fix it? I just hate the fact that Sony thinks they can shove a new format down our throats when we dont actually NEED it and then tries to charge us up the butt for it just to play some games! At least MS gives you the choice to upgrade to HD DVD.

What you don't think downloading demos, xbox live arcade games Tekken 5 and so forth is not digital distribution? Digital Distribution is getting more and more common everyday, and you can thank PCs in general and Valve in particular for innovating it.

Who said that you have to replace you dvds? Its not like when Blu-ray comes in, all you dvds are going to blowup or something or if you try to play them in a PS3, it'll say "Sorry, the PS3 only plays Blu-ray discs. Go buy your DVD collection on Blu-ray" or something. Keep your DVD's. I know I will. No ones forcing you to get rid of them. Sony's not barging into your house to destroy you DVD collection and replace them with Blu-ray. Its just another option like DVD was when it first came out an VHS was king.

Oblivion + 10x the original content = too high of production value. Games like that pry aren't realistically feasible.
