I got Borderlands for Christmas, and I am absolutely loving the MMO-style, loot-driven gameplay. Finding new weapons is extremely satisfying, and the combat balances skill and stats absolutely perfectly. I am constantly reminded of all of the fun I had playing World of Warcraft, which got me thinking of Borderlands' multiplayer, which in some ways is the game's weakest aspect.
With the game's current online setup, you can either join games with your XBOX-Live buddies to complete quests together, our you can enter matchmaking and have the game connect you with players of similar levels to fight through a random mission. In my opinion, a much more enjoyable multiplayer setup would be one similar to that of Guild Wars. For those unfamiliar with the game, Guild Wars is an unconventional MMORPG in which the only truly "Massively Multiplayer" portions of the game take place in Hub regions like cities. In these areas, you can interact with hundreds of players – joining parties, trading, and chatting – but once you leave the hub areas and head off into the wild, the game loads a separate version of the game world only for yourself and your party, with the levels and numbers of enemies scaled to suit your needs.
If Borderlands did this, it would eliminate the need to enter a separate menu to switch from single player or multiplayer gaming. If you don't want to play with other players, you can simply choose not to join a party and instead do quests solo, while the existence of other players in hub area would still allow you to trade, sell, and buy the game's awesome weapons with others.
I have only seen this done on consoles in the game Phantasy Star Online, but I think that it most certainly can be done. What do you think?
