Flight Simulator has now released playable alpha builds for the genre nobody plays and press ignores.

Here's a man talking a lot of crap for 30 minutes.

So far impressions seem far more positive than the last disaster (Microsoft Flight) that almost tanked the long dormant franchise.

Dovetail, who expect you to mortgage your home to buy their buggy shit barrage of DLC isn't involved. Even better.

It's worth noting, this will also be on Xbox, consoles, being shallow and simplistic, generally have never had proper flight-simulators.

Modded GTAV looks better in every step of the way and I rather play that since I can do everything that this game can't.

Haha yeah that genre has certainly seen more popular days.

I do have some fond memories of MS Flight Sim and I'm really curious what a modern version looks like. I'll wait until a proper release, but yeah I'm gonna check it out. Hopefully this time the entire world will be available without having to download extra packs. Oh and I want some passenger sim too!

Remember flight-sims use to get covered regularly in mags, even on (old) Gamespot up until about 2012 with Kevin Vanord.

I'm excited by what I heard and saw. I'm currently flying with X-Plane. It's cool but it sounds like this new simulator is going to outdo it.

Being a pilot sounds like an awesome job, the planes basically fly themselves now.

Shouldn't even really bother with the training.

Seems like it would get boring after awhile though I dunno.

How boring, nothing much to do other than look at the scenery, that's what a PS4 is for.

GTAV's world size is inferior to FS2020.

I have no desire to play flight sims in 2020.

It was cool 20 years ago.

I already know I can fly a plane in real life. It’s not hard. I worked at an airport and flew with pilots in the cockpit.

They legit do nothing. They even admitted they don’t have to do anything. lol

I almost convinced them to let me land the damn thing. 😂

Good to see FS back, and it looks stunning. Not my favourite genre, but I'd still love to try it out....and it's good to see MS offering more variation in their genres.

That can mostly be automated as well.

Personally I prefer combat flight-simulators, where you shoot people and drop bombs on innocent villages, but can understand the simple joys of enjoying flight.

It's nice this is coming to consoles, for a lot of people (kids even), this will be an entirely new experience.

It's no exaggeration to say this genre has been blanked out of existence in the last 7-8 years. And spiralling prices where they expect users to pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars hasn't helped matters.

You've clearly never flown in a flight simulator. You'd probably never make it off the ground.

Nice to see them still pursuing this genre. Civilian flight sims are not really my thing (I'll play military ones, however...love me some DCS A-10C! Space sims, too) but I might try this out. I played the hell out of Flight Sim 98 back in the day.

Now all they need to do is bring back Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator and I will be happy.

Hope this has VR. VR almost feels like it was made for flight sims!

Horseshit.

Modded GTAV looks good but it's showing its age. And I am pretty sure it didn't render satellite images of the earth and use AI to turn those images into 3D models, and machine learning blah blah blah to render 1 trillion trees.

This flight sim almost looks photorealistic at some points.

Prove any of that... Could you take us through the intricacies of flying a plane in real life -- take-off to landing or anything in-between. We'll all wait.

It always looks easy until something goes wrong or there is low visibility. Then the training lets you not die and take 200 people with you.

From my understanding flying is all about takeoff and landing. You need to know the traffic patterns around the airport's air space and listen to the flight controller. Once you're at altitude it's mostly auto-pilot.

At least that's what playing flight sims back in the day taught me :)

I'm pretty sure landing would be scary AF the first few times even with training.

I mean, naturally a game like this isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but it sounds fairly ambitious, and it looks good at least. I'm hoping it performs well and delivers.

Yup. There's so much that goes into just taking off. One important one that most people don't know if setting the cabin pressure. You can't just full throttle and take off unless you want everyone on the plane to blackout after a few thousand feet.

And pray that when you're landing there aren't any crosswinds.

The only thing commercial pilots do is taxing and take off, all the other bits including holding patterns and landing are done by the computer.

All those videos of planes landing with a crosswind and people applauding the pilot, yeah the computer does that. All the pilots do is sit the the cockpit and get irradiated every day.

Not entirely true. Autolandings are primarily done in low visibility situations where the pilot would have a hard time seeing the runway and there are crosswinds up to a certain maximum speed, which is determined by the airline. When crosswinds are above the limit, like in those videos you mentioned, the autolander cannot be engaged and a pilot is manually landing the plane.

Every aspect of a commercial flight is done manually by the pilot except for the parts just before cruising and decent to a certain altitude.

It looks fantastic. These aren’t something that I play all that often but it can be nice to mix things up every once in awhile so this could be something that would be nice to add to the game library.

You are right I've never "flown" in a flight simulator, and would never get off the ground, but why would I, I mean I would just drive the thing to the nearest highway imagine the chaos, the excitement, now imagine "flying" in the sky while you look at the scenery, I know which one I like better :)

Need to get me a half decent flight setup for when this releases.
