The thing is, I'm a PS3 owner, though, & I'm saying this. Tell me, why do most multiplatform games look better on the 360?

Blu-ray wasn't a complete waste of money, but good lord was that a huge chunk of change to gamble with - so much that I'm sure the final studio blows they gave HD-DVD were a result of monetary payouts. So all the setup costs plus incentives just because they had to save the massive investment they'd made.
The Cell is garbage, though. You'd think they'd have learned from the PS2's pain-in-the-ass architecture that a game console should be easy to program for. But hey, people had so much fun trying to figure out how to deal with next to no video memory...why not give them six cores to play around with? (before someone corrects me, I know one of the 8 is used for the system and one is just disabled by default)
That's not to say it's a bad system, I just have no bloody idea who they designed it for. Maybe next gen they can bring their goal of having your game console, TV, fridge and toaster all working in harmony to push polygons.

in most games i cant tell the difference. anything that can be pointed out is trivial. but i attribute any worse looking port from 360 to ps3 is having to factor in the 360 as the lowest common denominator. when games are built for the ps3 they always look better.

Because they are developed on it then portedAs for the Cell and Blu Ray, excuse a company for trying to advance technology
blu ray is useless because any benefit is negated by all the installs cows need to go through and the fact that DVDs can do the same stuff if you switch discs
the cell is rubbish. third parties cant use it so multiplaform games look better on 360, and sony only gets really outstanding results with it when they spend tons of money as with killzone 2.

Yeah, OK:roll: But to be on topic, I think that with the Cell, it's still a work in progress and they may not even get it fully operational to their standards until next-gen, if they choose to use it. As for Blu-Ray, I'm interested to see if there is a shift once the digital transition goes into effect for USA early next year.

Fixed. Sarcastic remark was deleted as there was no need for it. I don't play internet games, I just dish out what comes at me.
To be honest, Sony has wasted tons of money on both the Cell & Blu-Ray which has done absolutely nothing for the games whatsoever but just only made it more difficult & more costly for 3rd party developers to develop their games for the platform. What they need is a much better & stronger GPU, plus to make it more harder for them to port their games onto other systems & not make their hardware so difficult next gen. That's twice in a row that Microsoft has beaten them in the graphics department with both X-Box & X-Box 360 & that needs to change now. Plus Sony may have won the format war with Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, but can they beat out DVD though? I believe that they were a huge waste of money. I just think that it was a big waste of money in both the graphics & gaming department.garland51
Wow! I swore I have seen this same thread a page and a half ago. Lemmings still digging up old and redundant posts back from the grave from time to time.

No, they arent.
PS3 isnt the only thing that uses cell. IBM uses cell chips in their super computers. They're even putting simplified versions of it in other appliances like TVs.
Blu-ray won the war, its a success.
The chance for profit outsoide of SCE is greater than the potential loss on SCE's part.
but without blu-ray how would Konami fit in the 22hours of movies, and 8hours of gameplay on a dvd?Fizzman
thats too much..for me they were like 12 of movie and like 8 of gameplay......sad :(...only 20 hrs overall in a 50 gig Blu-ray disk
i think it was great that sony tried something new. I think the cell was over hyped to begin with, but i do not doubt that by the end of its lifecylce, the ps3 will be churning out some pretty impressive stuff.
That said, whilst the ps3 does have some flaws, the RROD will always be remembered as the most disgraceful issue ever endured by gamers. if MS had made the 360 to the same standard as the ps3, it would have cost much more and perhaps the gap between the ps3 and the 360 would not be so large, But no, MS convinced millions that constantly repairing consoles was "the future"
Blu-Ray wasnt a waste. It single handidly won them the format war, and will always prove to be a great marketing tool for the console.
The Cell wass absolutely a mistake. It offers nothing a more conventional proccesser doesnt, does not outperform such proccessers in gaming performance, and costs more to make. The Cell is the perfect example of Sony putting too much pride in themsevles.
That remains to be seen. The problem with your arguement is you said SONY.....not Sony's game division.
If we are just talking about Sony, the company......this could very well be a huge bucket load of money. If we are talking about their game division....actually I do think this has utterly damaged that division to the point they may never dominate like they with PS/PS2 ever again.
We won't know if it was a big waist to Sony in general for years. Blu-ray would have to become a niche Laser Disc format for that to happen and I honestly don't see that happening.

Here is why I don't think the Cell was a waist....when the PS4 comes out they are going to use it. It will be a massively buffed up version but make no mistake the research and developement will basically have been paid for already. I predict a very cheap PS4 in a couple years when it's launched. That may not help you know with the PS3 but you'll see the benefit later on.

That's nice. But will they make it significantly easier for devs to use?imagine just for a second if instead of putting money into bluray and the"cell" sony instead secures gta4 and res5 as exclusive microsoft would of been in deep trouble if you ask meParadiddleFill
Yeah...
And now just imagine that Sony didn't invent the cell and blu-ray just for the PS3...

You're right, there was actually some news about the PS4 and the Cell procesor a few weeks ago-

And apparently Sony want to launch it before the next Xbox. If they manage to launch first with an affordable and easy to-develop-for PS4, they are going to have a much, much easier time next gen compared to this gen.
[QUOTE="Floppy_Jim"]I wouldn't say MS have beaten them in the graphics department. Last gen, yes, but not this gen. I do think the Cell is unnecessarily expensive and difficult for 3rd party devs to work with though.king_boboThis guy has it spot on.
I always do. :)
Uhm... OK. Take Sony's first party games and compare them to Microsoft's. See the difference? Look at the current releases of games. See a difference? No? I should rest my case here, but I'll continue.
Bluray holds 50GB (Dual Layer) HDDVD holds 25 GB. See a difference? Yeah? Good. I should rest my case there, but I'll continue AGAIN.
360 has RRoD. A massive and well known defect in manufaturing that STILL has yet to be addressed. Have you heard of anything like that happening to PS3? No? I can rest my case here, but guess what. That's right, I'll continue.
Sony DESTROYED Microsoft when it came to the overall life cycle of last gen systems. PS2s even rivaled cable TV boxes with an install base of 2 in every 3 homes. They didn't actually begin to sell well until they broke even in sales with the cost of manufacturing in the third year of their life cycle. Sounds like the PS3 right now, doesn't it? Yeah? I should be done, but I have one more thing to say...
Before you go off on Sony manufacturing flaws, maybe you should think to yourself that there is a reason they've dominated the market for 13 years. They COMMIT to RAISING the gaming industry standard, while others are still looking to profit by tricking you into sub standards.
No HD for Wii? 360 breaks down frequently? No one else will play HD movies? Better graphics butmore limitations on media's storage space from 360? a couple of decent first party games from competitors, while Sony releases a SLEW of new concepts (along with sequels) yearly.
Please... PLEASE... Give credit where its due. I think Sony knows what they're doing. Afterall, while people are still buying PS2s, others are trying to ebay there old Xboxes ;)
Call me a fanboy if you guys wish. But after gaming for 22 years. I can say that there isn't a single company in the history of gaming that's given us such great quality and good times. Even our beloved 8-Bit Nintendo took 30 minutes of wrestling time before getting a game to boot up.
Sony is breaking even now, and will profit next year. The EXACT same way that it did last Gen. AND it might come early than later considering Universities and military outfits are now looking to order Cell Processors in mass quantities ;)

Sony sold all their Cell fabs to IBM, and per contract does not collect a royalty based on sales. That means nothing for Sony.
Whenever people start with the phrase " To be honest..." it implies that they are full of crap the majority of the time. Hence your honesty is somehow validated by your need to state "To be honest..." is confusing.
Blu ray was needed. Look at PS3 and piracy, longest a console or computer has lasted. No mod chip can crack the massive amount of layers on a Blu Ray disk. How much you want to bet the next systems have Blu Ray media.
The Cell was needed. Just because PS3 is slave to a PC developement cycle doesn't mean the cell has no use. The cell has not been fully explored, simply said; it needs more developement TLC. Sony is trying to make the games that make a difference. Only when 3rd parties start maximizing will we see break-through differences.

Not sure if the cell is rubbish or not, but most multplats look better on 360 because they use 360 as lead platform, and then port it to 360. when ps3 is used as lead paltform, graphics are actually almost the same. Look at Dead Space. and PS3 is sending out better development kits to third party!
If you recall last year's gen, Xbox was the superior hardware by far, but the multiplats looked like crap on it because they were ported from the ps2. Just saying.
And as for blueray being rubbish because of the installs is a matter of opinion----i would prefer a onetime install in the beginning of the game than having to use multiple dvd's and having to switch them in the middle of a game. Just saying matter of opinion!

Yes it does. By IBM selling them in mass quantity, means the cost per unit will now be cheaper for Sony to acquire.

You've got some good points but this one skews so hard to the 360 that it kind of tarnishes all the others. Resistance 2 and Little Big Planet are a far cry from Gears of War 2 and Fable 2, and looking back on the first party games already out for the 360 (Gears, Halo 3, Forza 2, etc) they kind of crap all over the PS3's lineup. The PS3 has many strengths, but games are not one of them.
Also, as nice a piece of engineering as the Cell is, it's basically just a clump of sub-Celeron class processors, with quantity taking precidence over quality. They're good for crunching numbers and little else, which is why everyone has to struggle so hard to pull games out of it.
