I think if it were cell-shaded it would ruin the game world because it would be more like an old game and the characters would be ugly looking and not appealing to us ( look at tales of vesperia ), this realistic looking characters while they seem to you not good are better off like this, maybe you didn't play alot of FF games but believe me, you will love how much detail and attention to the stories they put into their RPGs that would make you pass the look of the characters, I mean look how the voice acting are top-notch from the intro of FF12 provided, I've played the jp version of FF12 and I didn't know how awesome the voice acting was, I may get the US version after all.
Alot of people prefer the tone of versus though and I mean alot, this poll is living proof also and the game is so wonderful, I also hope it goes multi for more people to enjoy an awesome game, however just like you said, it is unlikely to go multi and at the same time nobody knows for sure, the bigger game went multiplat ( FFXIII ) after all.
As for the Star Wars comparison and similarities, I thought people loved star wars ( Im not a fan of the movie series though ), this kind of cinematic production qualities are what make me love the gaming industry even more, they are competing and surpassing the movie industry, more games need cinematic experiences like this and other big games.

I wasn't actually speaking of the people I'm guessing are the main characters (I actually very much like the styIe used in their design) or the designs of the faceless mooks when I was talking about the "anime-ish character and creature design"-I was talking more about some of the characters who look like they are wearing clothing that wouldn't look out of place in Queen Amidala's wardrobe (and that is something that, quite frankly, I cannot stand), and, more specifically, that woman (I'm assuming she's a sorceress or something) wearing blue clothing and that ridiculous headdress...
I watched the FFXII opening above and, quite frankly, did not like it, and largely for similar reasons, though my issues lie more with the creature designs than the character design (most specifically those weird rabbit-ish things that are apparently sentient beings; I quite simply cannot stand creature designs that were quite clearly made to be "cute", to be honest). I love Star Wars, but anything that reminds me of The Phantom Menace is, IMO, something to be avoided-that movie and Attack of the Clones were disgraces.

oh ok, I know it is weird a little bit but don't worry the blue woman is not a main character, she is shiva, a summon, she is one of the main summons and thats it, nothing more, nothing less.
As for FF12, if you were referring to the girls that looked rabbit-ish, one of the characters you can play in FF12 was like that and her name was fran lol, she was cool though.
