Hey, I just sold my wii and I am deciding on either a ps3, or a pc. If I got a pc it would permanently be connected to a 32" HDTV (720p). I'm not sure if that is a problem. I'll have to figure out how to comfortably play with a keyboard and mouse from far away. Plus, I'm not sure if pc gaming works from a far distance like console gaming.

I worked out a cheap budget system, and if I find the best deals possible I can get this for $505 shipped:

e8400 150

2GB (2x1GB) OCZ NVIDIA SLI-Ready Edition PC-8500 DDR2 Memory Kit $6 after $40MIR

6 Asus Radeon HD 4850 512MB PCI-Express Video Card $145 After $30MIR 140

ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard EMCAJAHAD 120

dvd drive 0

OCZ StealthXStream 500 Watt 11

Rosewill R218-P-BK Black 0.5mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 32

Ultra ATA/100 160GB 35

keyboard 10

505

Or, I can get a ps3 for like 400...

I like how the ps3 has blueray and if it lasts as long as the ps2 it will be around for a while. But, I like the keyboard and mouse for shooters.

Any tips?

Thanks

I would get a 360, but if you are choosing between those, get the PC.

I don't think the PS3 will last as long as the PS2. Maybe as long as the Gamecube.

I guess I am mostly concerned with the pc connected to a 32" lcd @ 720p all the time. Is the gaming experience on a pc good from a distance @ 1366x768?

M8 , go buy PC asap , and leave PS3 for 09 or even 2010 when price will be like 250-200$. Thats what ill do. Depends the games, depends the price, depends everything. For now , if iwas you , i would wait for PS3 while i would have fun with my new PC :) But its up to you in the end isnt? :) muhehe

Yeah, I have my PC set up in my living room to a 40" Sony Bravia. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse. I have tons of movies on ym hard drive I just play. I have a surround sound system set up and its just really nice to sit back, keyboard on my lap, mouse on the arm of the couch.

I also have a 360 wirelss controller set up witht he wireless dongle. Any games for windows support it and for those that dont, there is a free profgram called x-padder which is so simple and easy to use, you can set a profile up to allow you to assign any keyboard and mouse functions to the controller. Overall, I get to play quite a bit of the 360s library, all the multiplats and many other pc exclusive games on a controller, just like a console does but with much much better graphics.

Totally worth it!

and at 720p, you'll be maxing most games with even a modest graphics card these days.

Edit: with the HD 4850 you'll definitely max everything out there even crysis at that resolution providing you take it easy on the AA, but even then. Trust me go for the PC.

Thanks everyone.

DAZZER7 - your setup sounds sweet. I think I'll go pc w/ wireless keyboard/mouse + a wireless controller for some games...I'm not sure if I'll use kb/m or gamepad for gta4. I like the mouse for shooting, but gamepad for driving.

Thanks for the help though.

If my only options are PC or Ps3, definately the PC.

You have a great computer there too. I don't know how your getting these parts so cheap though. Still, definately get a PC, tons of good games coming, and tons of good games already out.

PC without a doubt. Unless you really want to play MGS4, other than that the PC beats PS3 in every department. My PS3 just sits gathering dust whilst my PC is used almost everyday by me or my kids for gaming.

Also PC is great hooked up to big tv. The only problem i have is at 1080p a few games that use text are very difficult to read at a distance. Very very few games though.

Here are some case fans to choose from. The Noctuas are nice, but they are pretty expensive. The Yate Loons are good if you don't want to spend as much.

If your TV supports HDMI, you can use an adapter and an HDMI cable to hook up the graphics card to the TV.

PC is better perfomace wise. But game wise, its your decision. PC has Stalker Clear Sky, Starcraft 2, Far Cry 2(better on PC), Doom 4(better on PC), Project Origin(better on PC). PS3 has Killzone 2, MGS4, God of War III, Little Big Planet, Legendary, Skate 2, Motorstorm 2: Pacific Rift and Socom: Confrontation. But if your looking for power, that PC will kill the PS3.

The games on pc will be good for me. I mostly like shooters. And for the person who asked how I would get the stuff so cheap, I listed the lowest prices I found on http://slickdeals.net/. With a little patience you can get really cheap stuff.

-___- damn, a PC with a 4850 is so hot, it's very good. IMO go with PC, it gets tons of games, it is also getting a lot of console games and they will look better. Not to mention you can use that PC as an entertainment center and for work.

Are you a PC gamer or a console gamer?

Consoles get plenty of FPS, WRPG, Fighting, Platforming, JRPG, Adventure and Sports games.

PCs get plenty of FPS (more than consoles), WRPG (more than consoles), RTS and MMO.

Choose the genres you really love and see where they fall.

Thats a really nice build! Obviously I suggest the PC

However I suggest you check this out when you get the HD 4850

http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?t=300495

however, do NOT use 65 or 70% like that guide suggests, it is way to loud for my liking. I put my HD 4870's fan at 37% and enjoy low temps ranging from 51 to 58c.

So can you set the output resolution more than 1366 x 768 for a 720p tv? 1366 x 768 is the native resolution, so is it a waste to set the computer at a higher res. if it is possible? Does it downscale (not sure what that is, but I've heard the term)?

Thanks

Yeah, if that is the native resolution of your tv then it wont display anything higher than that. If you want higher, you will need to get a 1080p tv or if you want higher, a 24" monitor and up. Of course, the card you've got will support those resolutions, so it's an option you may want to consider later on. However, at 720p (1366 x 768) you'll be seriously maxing any game out for a long time and as you're sat back on a couch, being that little bit further away, you'll be very hard pushed to see higher resolutions. For that you need to be sat up close to a monitor.

Agreed. At least with the PS3 we know it was outdated years ago.
