Bungie Cancels Announcement, Microsoft Confirms New Halo Game

Confusion has reigned over plans by Halo developer Bungie to announce a new game at E3 this week, with a countdown on their website being removed as a result of publisher changes.

The timer was due to expire today, with rumors suggesting that Bungie was about to announce a new, possibly non-Halo related, title. The front page of the Bungie website has now been replaced with what appears to be a screen grab of an e-mail from Bungie president Harold Ryan.

The message reads: "For the last several months, we've been building toward a reveal of something exciting that Bungie is working on. We were looking forward to sharing that with our fan community during the week of E3. However, those plans were just changed by our publisher.

We realize that many of our fans are disappointed by this turn of events; members of the Bungie team share that disappointment.

When the right time comes, we look forward to sharing this exciting announcement with you. Until then, we appreciate your continued support and patience."

Following the announcement an interview with Don Mattrick, Microsoft's senior vice president of interactive entertainment business, on weblog MTV Multiplayer revealed that the game in question may in fact be a new Halo game.

According to Mattrick, Bungie is developing a game for Microsoft that is neither Ensemble Studio's real-time strategy Halo Wars, nor Peter Jackson's Halo Chronicles project.

It would be so cool if the game followed the rise of the Covenant, for example when they tamed the Hunters and similar events.

I'm starting to get more intrigued.

Just how big would something have to be for MS to pull the plug on what was by most standards, the biggest freaking deal of the day at E3 - Especially when Bungie had the whole hype web ticker going and seemed to want badly to share their new IP.

Even when they do announce the IP, I want to know just what happened here today.

You think they got wind of a Sony surprise and want to wait till that happens and then let Bungie come out and steal all the thunder ?

That would be awesome. I know one of the highlights of Halo 2 for me was getting to play as the Arbiter, which gave the game a different perspective playstyle wise and storyline wise.

Or they could go more Search for Spock style with it and have you play as the Arbiter searching for Master Chief. That could be cool too, end up going to another planet, and fighting a war with a whole new race of alien badasses.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. Not sure if it's this Halo thing, or something completely different. Honestly, there's too many conspiracy theories for me to care anymore -- so I'll just wait for the whole event to finish before getting excited or disappointed.

Hunter would be fun as hell, but overpowered. They would have to make some really good sniping A.I. But it's Bungie so I think they could pull it off. Although you did just give me an idea for a really awesome Battlefield style Halo game.

Yes, more Halo games. That makes three in the pipeline? I thought Sony were supposed to be the ones milking us dry with all of these franchises.

Seems desperate to me. Halo 4. Halo 5. Keep going to the Halo well and playing on peoples sentimentality over the series... kind of sounds like the criticism that was always aimed at Final Fantasy (which by the way is suddenly an amazing game and not "some stupid JRPG with nothing but cutscenes and a girlman for a protagonist") :lol:

I would really like MS to announce a new IP at some point. All the ballyhoo about their E3 concerns them ALSO getting FF13, all of the games they have shown have been around for ages. Where are the new games?

I really hope this announcement is something, anything new. Even a new Marathon would seem a little more fresh.

i had a dream about this last night.

its halo 4, but the weird thing in the dream was it was like halo and oblivion mixed. like a fps rpg. it looked like oblivion environments but with halo characters and weapons. really weird

All the info has been out of the ordinary. First Bungie cancelling, then a MS rep telling us that they are working on a new Halo game. If they were working on a Halo game then they wouldnt of said anything but instead they would of shown a trailer or gameplay before saying it in a regular interview and by a person outside of bungie, especially another Halo game. Maybe today we will know since 7 is the magic number and so is the time for that announcement.

I also know when a franchise begins to become a money making cash cow.

Dont overuse the universe, otherwise one day you will be playing Master Chief and Cortana at the Olympic Games.

I dont see why Bungie dont use their creative talent elsewhere apart from the same franchise they have been working on for about a decade
