Everyone hear already knows that Digital Download is going to be the future for video gaming. Not everyone has internet or plugs their PC/Console to the interent, but the adpotion rates are ever increasing. One thing however, that everyone tends ignore is the gross profit margins per product.

Everything is not about sales, so stop throwing sales numbers left and right. =p Maybe people should start throwing profit margins.

Anyways, due to the PC Market already ahead in the game of digital downloads I will use that as a point of reference, espically Steam.

As quoted, "Steam's success i[s] attributed mainly to the convenience it offers players, as well as the competitive pricing for publishers. On Steam publishers earn a gross margin of 70 per cent, compared to the 30 per cent offered at retail stores. Source

In other words, publishers/developers gain a 70% return in profit, on average, when using digital download method of sale compared to retail. Not Hard to Understand.

Example: If a game sales One Million Copies Online ($60) and One Million Copies via Retail ($60), on average, the publisher will gain a $42,000,000 in profits from online compared to $18,000,000 from retail. Yup That is More Then Double!

This same method can be used to calcuate the average profit from a console game, due to most of them being retail sales, just add console licensing fees.

So here is the point, stop throwing sales numbers like they are the final say in everything and stop saying PC Gaming is dying because, it is way more profitable then many think. It can take almost double the console sales to match the profit margin of a PC Download.

They'll earn double profits and yet they still insist on cutting back the quality. Oh dear.

Thankfully Canada is fighting the current push to cap all of our ISP's bandwidths under the Bell banner, we will find out if our efforts are worth it in a few months time.

I know, hence WHY I LOVE CANADA!! They announced the cap plans, the Gov't quickly announced they would fight it back. Wish the US Gov't was that fast and its officials not sucked into Corporate $$$.

Main reason the Canadian Government jumped off it's behind is becuase of the massive petition we had telling them they aint gonna get no more votes if they don't whack this law across the face.

I see. I don't have/use a cellphone, so I wouldn't know. I also wouldn't use a mobile device internet connection for gaming or downloading things anyway.

For the PC? Yah, but we already know that.

Consoles where Sony/MS/Nintendo control everything? I'd be very afraid.

And they also raise the price. By 10 $. They're insane. They should be decreasing the price by 10$.

TC'scalculation of double profit is based on the assumption that the DD game is sold for the same price as a retailed one. It isn't.

I can now see why PC gamers say Consoles are holding gaming back. I wonder how the future of consoles would be tho cause they seem to be the main focus of developers as it is so i dont know if such digital (its already happening) sales would become the norm. Consoles are not all ready to access the internet like PCs and i dont know what ideas Sony/MS/Nintendo would come up with to curb that. Also in any industry,wholesellers/Retailers are important, granted buying directly from the Manufacturer does make it convenient and cheap but without the middlemen, the industry would be really lacking

because they don't know anything. people still pay for AOL because it "works". a lot of people out there don't have/want high speed internet and don't download enough to remotely get close to a cap. these people, more numerous than you can imagine, are the people who will pay for a capped internet plan.
