Sony said they were going to do this last summer. It's nothing new. Don't be surprised if they stop making the EE available in Japan and the US as well. I'd go one further and bet they will even disable BC via the EE on older systems with an update in the future as well.

They'd better not, although its possible yes...I bought a Playstation 3 the other day because it has the Emotion Engine in it. I wanted that particular feature since I own neither a PS2 or a PS1 anymore.
Uh, in 2 years when you are out of games you want to play and you buy the Playstation 3 you will have completely wasted that 100 dollars. TheSystemLord1

They'd better not, although its possible yes...I bought a Playstation 3 the other day because it has the Emotion Engine in it. I wanted that particular feature since I own neither a PS2 or a PS1 anymore. It won't make a difference. Firmware updates can (and probably will) disable the EE even if you do have it. Software emulation will eventually be standard among all PS3s. While you give up the numbers of games that are BC, software emulation allows for upscaling. It's a win-lose situation.
