The Call of Duty series may not be coming to Xbox Game Pass, a well-known Microsoft leaker has said. The addition of the hit shooter franchise to Xbox Game Pass was previously touted as one of the biggest consumer-facing benefits of Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

After the $68.7 billion deal was closed in October, Microsoft was swarmed with fan questions about when exactly it intends to bring its newest subsidiary's catalog to its subscription service. Shortly thereafter, Activision Blizzard said its games would start arriving on Xbox Game Pass sometime in 2024.

And while theCall of Dutyseries was never expected to be in the first wave of those additions, it now appears that the hit franchise may end up skipping the subscription service altogether. That's according to long-time Microsoft leaker Timdog, who said he "heard" thatCall of Dutywon't be coming to Xbox Game Pass during the latest episode of theGamers Councilpodcast. The insider sarcastically labeled that move as one of Microsoft's "brilliant ideas" made as part of the company's rumored pivot to third-party publishing, all in response todeclining Xbox console sales.

Thoughts, SW? I could see this happening. Call of Duty makes way too much money to put on a subscription service.

I think the only thing stopping it from being on Game Pass is whatever remains conditions exist with Sony's prior marketing deal. As long as that's still active, Microsoft won't be allowed to even talk about it due to boilerplate NDAs.

It really comes down to the terms of the previous agreement, and whether Microsoft renegotiated their deal to end early, and maybe give Sony a higher royalty cut they sacrificed to get the deal, or if that stays. Sony could have set conditions that are beyond a game by game basis and effect the catalog. No doubt under Sony's marketing arrangements, keeping games off Game Pass is part of their agreements, we saw this in the leaked RE8 marketing deal. If heard it brought up before though these deals also include the ability to keep a broader selection of these titles off of a competitors catalog. Not sure if the case here. But the basics of the RE8 deal essentially lock a game from being on Game Pass up to a year + 4 months after its release (4 months for Sony to bargain for game to be on PS Plus before it can go to Game Pass). If it's a case by case basis, the last COD won't be on Game Pass until next year, and whatever next COD game releases next (should be the last of the Sony-COD deal), that'll be on Game Pass 16 months after its release if they are still honoring the previous deal.

Unfortunately while under terms of the deal, MS is forced to be mum about what's going on there. Again, we won't know when ABK content will drop on Game Pass until right before it happens, and that's due to terms of the Sony marketing arrangement. Ms can't dispel rumors in the meantime.

But if these resitrictions exist on a game by game basis, I think the earliest we might see the ABK content dump is late February. That'd be able to include everything up to 2022's MW2. But if Sony's marketing contract applies across the franchise, then we won't see COD on Game Pass until 2027. Again too, if that's the case, MS can't say. They'll be required to stay quiet about when and why.

Not a news. Sony still had 3 years with their marketing deal at the time of acquisition so that essentially means 2 years are still left in the deal. CoD can't be on GP until then at the very least.

Their marketing deal for 3 years has expired. Phil has confirmed that COD will be on Game Pass in 2024.

I thought it couldn't be on GP until the Sony marketing agreement was over. Either way, I don't play CoD, so I am good.

Absolute shame. I would love to play MW1, CW, Vanguard and MW2 campaigns on PC.

Pretty sure when it says COD not coming to Gamepass it's referring to NEW titles.

All those older titles would be fair game. There have already been several COD games on PS+. It's only the new games that could have lost profits which MS would be concerned about protecting.

Basically MS would be adopting Sony's model for new game releases with COD going forward. Spiderman, TLOU and God of War are all on PS+ now, you're just not going to get them during the launch period when sales are at their peak and potential for lost profits are still high.

As long as those games aren't still creating significant revenue as far as sales go, they'll sure to be added to the catalog at same as Sony.

So yeah, not two but one more year. I mistakenly counted the acquisition announcement to be in the year 2023 when it was in 2022.
