Can anybody explain to me what's so good about Mass Effect 2?

[QUOTE="themyth01"] Focusing on RPG elements would be a step backwards. They showed it works great like this, they should just improve on their proven formula rather than add stuff to satisfy the minority and risking breaking their current gameplay core. GreySeal9

I agree with you,but still its pretty lame how Bioware claims it as RPG.

It's more lame that you think it's somehow lame to call a game that has its fair share of RPG elements an RPG.

I suppose you would have a problem with Atlus calling Demons Souls an RPG, which would be lame as well.\

Yes I do,and I am asuming that was intended to call me a cow.

I was trying to draw a parallel that you could maybe relate to. But apparently not.

How in the world is it lame to call two games which have enough RPG elements to be considered action RGPS RPGS?

Sure. One can disagree with a classification? But lame? How is it lame?

It's hyberbolic wording like that that made me think that you're some kind of fanboy.

incredible game with production values that far exceed most games.

it's above and beyond uncharted 2 in terms of depth, scope and story, easily. Whether or not it is a better game remains entirely subjective, sinceboth have virtually equal metacritic scores.

Good point, it needs blind firing. It also needs ME1's option to manually duck. And I love the thermal clips. An ammo system makes things more intense (having to come out of cover to pick up clips is quite fun, especially on insanity when each clip can be the difference between life and death).

IronBass

Eh..I dunno about blind firing, though I guess it would be nice to be able to do something than just twiddle your thumbs while you wait on your shield recharge. Wouldn't be bad as long as they gave it a huge accuracy penalty.

I, too, prefer the clip system though (only ever played ME2 on Insanity.) The only thing I HATE is that if your weapon is completely spent, you have to pick up a themal clip, RELOAD, and then pick up another thermal clip to be at full ammunition. I wish they'd made it so that it just gives you a surplus, making it possible to get max ammo even if the currently-loaded clip in the weapon is empty. Maybe not a big deal with something like the Submachine Gun, but it's really annoying with Heavy Pistols (for which you can only carry a handful of "ammo.")

I Liked the first one better. Even with the technical problems Idk It just didn't feel like an RPG. Leveling up felt useless cause I didn't feel much stronger or anything Like I did when I got to level 60 in the first one. And I like exploring the planets. Sure it was baren most of the time but I enjoyed that more than those stupid scanner things. Plus the story was way better.

Great Story + Great Gameplay is what it boils down to, If you like TPS shooters you will like this. Really top notch on the PC.

I don't want the thermal clips to be removed, i just don't want to be on my last one and watch Shepard flip it out and smash it on the floor only to be left witha gun which still has infinite ammo (the metal block) yet not being able to fire it because i busted me last thermal clip. The game should then just make the gun overheat. Or have different types of weapons, some with overheat and some with clips.

Reload adds alot i agree, but balancing your temp was also great.

Or the other solution is remove the limit to the clips, so you still have to reload but not have to worry about running out.

Maybe you're not a fanboy, maybe you are. The hyperbolic language made me assume that you are. My apologies if you are legitimately not a fanboy.

But anyway, yes, a fair amount. Mass Effect 2 has dialogue trees, leveling, nuanced character interaction, the basic stuff you see in these kind of WRPGs. Demon Soul's has an extremely nuanced stats system and tons of item RPG-like item effects.

I think it's lame that people think they can define what a RPG is with anything resemblingpinpoint accuracy when the genre is so diverse. Both ME2 and DS are action RPGS.

My oldest boy bought it a couple weeks ago. He liked it, but gives it a HUGE thumbs down for not having splitscreen coop/deathmatch, OR online play. AND I really cant believe a game like that doesnt have those things. Good thing its 60$ lol....NOT!

Eew. I didn't really like the planet scanning and resource gathering in ME2, but it's preferable to driving around barren planets in the Mako.

Not that I disliked the Mako itself, like a lot of people seem to..it just didn't feel like they put much work or thought into the areas involving the Mako. Everything seemed..the same. It got really old, really fast.

i agree, but only in that i liked the way the first mass effect played a LOT better. it was more like an rpg; there were healthpacks, and you didn't have to worry about ammo, and the game was less about combat and more about story.

Mass Effect multiplayer would not be fun. Co-op would be WAY too difficult given how story-heavy the game is. Its an RPG, not a traditional TPS.

So, I only played it until I met Garrus as Archangel and then I got bored up and then turn off my PC, never touched it again.

ihsanqueen

That's like the first 2 hours of the game. Maybe it just wasn't for you. You can't buy a game and make it the type of game you like. Maybe you should have did more research or had more of an open mind about it. Either way, your loss.

This is the issue, a gun with infinite ammo, but i can only carry so many thermal clips. Why can't i have a liquid nitrogen storage device that i can put clips in to let them cool down again.

Remove the limit, make it infinite, keep the reload.

Oh and it does need blind fire, all 3rd person shooters need blind fire, and it can be inaccurate, it just needs it, because its cool! :D

Ok, so just yesterday I finally finished Mass Effect 1 on PC and without a sigle doubt I rushed to a store and bought ME 2 for PC, go home, and installed it.

After seeing the MC average review of 96, same as Uncharted 2, seeing the IGN article "ME 2 is better than U2" I had a lot of expectations from this game, "Wow, this is a game that is better than U2, one of the best game of all time" so I played the game and I thought.......

WTF? How can anybody said this game very good?

You can't change your armor, just upgrade it, and you can't change or modify your friend's armor, you can't toogle-helmet in the middle of the mission, there's no equipment in the menu, when you gained level-up you can't upgrade your status anymore, just skill point....

Gameplay...what? So I'm playing Gears of War+COD now? Seriously? I want to play RPG, not TPS! So now if I'm taking cover your heal regained just like when I played COD? What the....so what's the point of having Medigel in this game? Only for Unity? Pfffttt!!

Graphic.....did I heard some lemmings said this game on 360 has better graphic than U2? What a bulls**t....I played it on my PC and everything are maxed out!! Better than U2? They're not even on the same levels!! U2 graphics and animations are 100 times better than ME 2!! Seriously, anybody said ME 2 graphics are better than U2 proves he didn't have a PS3!

So, I only played it until I met Garrus as Archangel and then I got bored up and then turn off my PC, never touched it again.

So, please SW, can anybody told me a reason why ME 2 is so good besides the story? Because so far, ME 2 is one of my biggest dissapointment this year, better than Uncharted 2? I'm really glad GS only gave this game score 9.0 not 9.5 because ME 2 is no way better than Uncharted 2

ihsanqueen

hold on there Apples McStrangeTree

at least finish the game before you review it

i too found the change from ME1 jarring at first but it didn't take long for me to really enjoy the game, besides the inventory was the first game's biggest letdown and combat in the first game never took advantage of biotic or tech powers, ME2 does a much better job despite its gears-of-war feel

W1NGMAN-

It's funny but I think the games that people complain about not being RPGish enough are the ones that will be remembered as crapping all over all the others this gen. These games will probably be Mass Effect 2, Demon Souls and Final Fantasy XIII with Dragon Age as the exception to this rule.

This right here, people should understand this. I hope for three they combine 1 and 2, meaning I want the story from 1 with the the technical aspects of 2. The second was better in almost everything but the most important part of the game (to me).

Equipment managment and massive unbalances with level were alot of gripes from the first, this is not the RPG aspects that they really focused on in this one. Alot of the times you could turn around a corner and get oneshotted or something stupid, most of the character development didn't rely on developing stats but personality, choices, and created better outcomes. And neither gears, cod, or U2 still offer the same type of combat thats in this, you still have skills you can play with, and team mates to command.

The unreal engine is getting dated, but from everything i've seen on this it looks lovely, and the only reason its probably better then U2, (someone that has played it correce me, for ME2) is the areas looked alot bigger compared to U2's, and a bigger scope.

The changes were just what the game needed. Managing loot in ME1 was pretty dire, ME2's system is much more streamlined and makes far more sense. Less fannying around, more playing!

They definitely were.

Even the outright removal of the inventory system was better than keeping it as it was. As I said earlier: I do hope an inventory system returns in the third game, as long as they do it correctly.

I'm currently replaying ME1 (carrying new choices over into a ME2 replay) and while I am enjoying it, I can't wait to get to the second game. There's nothing I prefer about the first game, perhaps other than the main plot (too much of ME2 is spent simply recruiting/building loyalty. Not that I didn't enjoy that too.)

Ironically it's more of a RPG than most other games this gen. People have really been mistaking Stat Customizing and Inventory for being thecore RPG elements. Shepard is actually your character, your personality, etc.

1.) You listed games that have some of the elements that make a RPG. ME2 has most of them (if ot all). That's what makes it a RPG. 2) To my understanding, AP tries to be a Shooter/RPG hybrid, too. Like ME.

First: "I hate having to go through these menus! This game blows!"

After menu use is minimized: "WTF?! Where is all my useless armor and weapons? This isn't an RPG anymore!"

Conclusion: Damned if you don't, damned if you do.

Maybe youre just one of the few that dislike the game. Or you have bad taste in games period. Who knows. But to answer your question, I like the combat. The best part of the game in my opinion.

I'm on my second playthrough as an Adept, and it's a great game, especially if you played the first one. Just about everything except for the plot and the planet scanning is a lot better than the first one. Don't get me wrong, Mass Effect 1 is a great game, but Mass Effect 2 improved tremendously with intense gameplay, better writing, and a fleshed out universe that is one of the best sci-fi universe to have come out in a long time.

Rpg's are more of a niche market. ME2 has a more mass appeal. So to each his own... i don't like RPG's they are way to slow for my taste!

I didn't like it either.

Recruting your whole team takes like 10-15 hours and it's just annoying.

I'm just about done it but I have no drive to finish it, running it maxed out over here as well and it isn't as good as UC2, that's for sure.

So...you don't like it. Lots of people don't like it, much like how a lot of people don't like Uncharted 2 :?. Personally, I loved it (if you think Gamespot overrates games, check out my ratings :P).

Awesome story, presentation, gameplay, story paths, expansive world, and fun to play. I ask myself the same question about MGS4 though. themyth01
+1 I completely agree.

Alright then, lemme tell you why: Extremely well-paced and original narrative Tons of backstory and lore Excellent cast of well devoloped and believable characters Refined combat system Heavy choice and consequence system More streamlined upgrading system than in ME1 Very long Amazing presentation Lot's of fun What else can I say? It's a kickass game.

I wasn't a fan of what they did with the weapons and armour system and also the lack of a stat system. Apart from that however I enjoyed every other bit of the game and I do think it looks better than U2, but that's just my opinion:

Waits for fanboys" ZOMG KEKEKE U2 PWNZOR ME2 GRAPHICS KEKEKE, JOO NOOOB KEKEKEKEKE, CONSOLES ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN TEH UNIVERSE KEKEKEKEKEKKEKEKEKEKEKKEKE".

Mass Effect 2 is not a RPG as far as I'm concerned. I passed the game just recently. I enjoyed it, but not as much as the first ME which was more like a RPG and less like a TPS.

Agreed, altough i did really love it and played through it twice, it just felt very shallow compared to ME1.

I like the story, seeing as I can't aim for toffee. I am going to point out this one because I can, no JRPG allows any real stat modification when you level :P the story is always the same as well. It is one of the better RPG's to come out this year, however the new Dragon Age expansion will keep me busy. I just play ME because it's Bioware.

It is obvious you missed the point.
