Last Generation was very successful and it had 4 competitors, this is really not a problem. The industry is unstable with 3 strong console competitors, 4 could cause a collapse.

You're going to get the same token gamer response on this forum about Appleselling overpriced tech fashionbut I think it is completely plausible that Apple could enter the fray with a competent gaming machine.
They have the in house resources to do so and now with big time developers on board making games for their illustrious app store, they have the third party backing as well. I don't think they ever will or want to join the "console wars," but they are certainly capable of it.
I think Apple is going for it, they have nothing to loose and more to gain, Ipad sold millions at a ridiculous price point, it only shows that People will buy any Apple productThe industry is unstable with 3 strong console competitors, 4 could cause a collapse.

Are you talking about the DC, it was not successful and killed (well it was all ready weak) SEGA console devision.

On the handheld market it surely can compete with nintendo or sonypsp. I don't think it would ever be as high as nintendo but very possible could match up to sony's handhelds. I work in a exxon plant and everyday everyone in my age bracket of 20-29 are found playing in the smoke pens some sort of game or two on their phones. As the masses grow in age and looking how companies see "smartphones", I can easily see Apples smartphones doing well in the handheld game sector. Just hard to find people "sneaking" ds's and psp's at work. The Iphone just seems to work well in this scenario (that and other smartphones that is).

That's because Sega games are still around, Sega just stopped producing hardware...!
Why would Apple want to enter the console market? They make more than enough money from the Zombies that buy the new IPhone every year, and will probably start milking out the IPad with a new version every year also. That's a lot of money. Starting up a new console has to cost a lot of money that they may potentially never recover. They will stick with their cash cows.
Wlle why did Sony entered? and M$? same reason why Apple will enter, Expand their market and gain more money. Why would Apple want to enter the console market? mmm and those who bought MW2 DLC Map for $20 ? lol those kinda people who doesn't care on what they spend will but an apple console,You're missing one vital point: People who buy gaming rigs and game consoles aren't necessarrily the same as the ones who buy ipads

Most of the people I know who are Apple fans are not gamers. They don't buy consoles. They play the odd game on their phone whilst on the train or on their lunch break. They don't get home from work and fire up a console for a few hours of gaming. It is a different market.
They would need to develop a console that offers something more attractive than the competition, which would be very difficult as we have a crowded market with 3 consoles, all of which have their strengths and are good machines. Designing a console from scratch to compete with Sony, MS and Nintendo? That is going to take a ton of money, and even then it is risky.
Lets say they design a decent system, then we come to the games....
A new, unproven, player in the console market (even a company as big as Apple) is not going to get a ton of 3rd party support until the publishers can see the console is selling. They would have to get some sort of 1st party game development under way. They can either set up their own teams, or buy some developers, but either way it is going take time and money.
For this reason I don't see Apple making a console..... Unless....
It might work if they did a "joint venture" with another company. A partnership between Apple and Activision for example? Apple providing the hardware expertise, Activision providing 1st party games and valuable experience of milking gamers!

They will buy anything Apple puts out. Apple will make them gamers.

still it wouldnt be enough to compete with the 3s
They have the fanboys which means they're halfway there..KittenWishes
Win. Gotta love the Apple fanboys that spend too much time on the internet because they bought an overpriced product and lack games to play.
More competition is always welcome. Zero5000X
I had to wonder: is having four companies competing in the console business better than three?

under normal circumstances Zero5000X would be right. but the console market is not a normal market that promotes competition. its structured in such a way that the more companies that enter....the worse it gets for consumers. more consoles=more exclusives on those consoles=people need to buy more consoles to play all the best game. if the console market was civil, like the DVD player market, where the whole concept of first and third party devs didnt exist and any game would run on any console then more enterants would be great. but the console market is not civil...its bonkers. as for the topic....whatever apple do at the mo turns to gold. i dont understand it at all but the market loves anything apple. i could certainly see them get their foot in the market based on brand power alone. however keeping it there would be harder unless they got th support. but a console tapped into the appstore and open to everyone and anyone to develop...backed by the big 3rd parties.....could cause an upset.[QUOTE="DoomZaW"]mmm and those who bought MW2 DLC Map for $20 ? lol those kinda people who doesn't care on what they spend will but an apple console,You're missing one vital point: People who buy gaming rigs and game consoles aren't necessarrily the same as the ones who buy ipads

im saying that probably the majority of apples fanbase doesn't care alot for games, apple really doesn't either, if they had they would probably have done more for pushing the ipad/itouch as a gaming platform.
