I don't have the space or the time to download 13 GB atm. Will I still get the game permanently added to my steam list if I cancel the download?

Tough to know for certain, it says on the announcement "all you need to do is install it", so it's possible that by simply choosing "install" it'll count as you owning it, or you might need to fully install the game.

The best option is to just pause it for now. Right click and choose "Manage downloads" then pause the download until you have the time to download it.

I would have thought if it's in your library that would okay. Pretty annoying if not!

That's what I did. I just added it to my library. I'll actually install it when I feel like playing it in the future.

To claim your L4D2 gift, all you need to do is install it.

If you don’t install, it goes back to its regular price and you miss out!

Hmm. On the steam store, you click "Install" to add it to your library, but you don't actually install it at that point (slightly misleading button title). I'd assume you don't actually need to install it because I can see it in my library. I doubt they'll just remove it from my library because I didn't follow through and actually install it. That'd be pretty ridiculous (but I guess it's possible though).

If you haven't bought it by now... and now that its free isn't enough incentive for you to make room for it on your HDD... then you're never going to play it anyway... so who cares?

Launch the Steam app and see if it is listed in your library. If so, just double click it in your games list to download it.

You don't actually need to install it. When you click on the "Free" button it tells you that it's been added to your steam library. It's not a demo, the addition is permanent. Thanks, Steam!

I know that on PS Plus when you get a free game you technically 'buy' it from the store for the price of $0.00 and after that the game is attached to your account from then on so it can always be re downloaded, but won't start if you cancel your PS Plus membership.

I'm guessing that if Steam has something similar to this then it will forever be attached to your account. Though after recently downloading DOTA 2 and Path of Exile I think all I really did was click on the 'free download' button after which it asked where I wanted to install the game.

However given that it's Valve I'd be surprised if you would have to buy it the next time around should you come across something like a hard drive crash.
