As far as as I know about the games industry, it takes wins in all 3 territories to get a hold of the games industry but unfortunately Microsoft is dead in Japan like last gen. Thats ok though since 360 is winning in the most important market, America. Its going to be tough for Microsoft because their going up against the heavyweights Nintendo and Sony.

Can Microsoft become the next Market Leader and explain why ?

It depends on M$, but I don't see it as it's going now...too many missing AAA in Specific Genre's (Platforming, Fighting, Action) and the Sales are lacking in Europe, and really bad in Japan.

But anything is possible. I could go on and on about the strengths (Online to FPS/3rd Person Shooters) but what's the point. To dominate you have to have A LOT (Not a couple) of QUALITY AAA-AA titles in ALMOST EVERY GENRE....but it's going on it's third X-mas, so we shall see.

Oh, and the Wii is doing GREAT everywhere, and the PS3 hasn't hit mass market price point yet (Still selling it to HD users mostly).

No, not in the long run. In the US alone, possibly, but unlikely. However, it's still to early to tell, so I just voted for maybe.

I'm not fussed if it doesn't win. It's not like the plug will be pulled on it once the Wii overtakes it in sales.

To be honest, they don't need to win.

Microsofts gaming devision is a small distraction, some fun for MS.

Why do you say america is the most important market? Last time i checked ps2 sales were dead even in europe and the US. Europe has more people living there too. You need europe just as bad as you need the US.

I don't see them winning in either territory. Its a hardcore gamers machine and it has the MS brand name on it which will never be able to compete with the playstation or nintendo brandname.

Nope. Nintendo will kick ass in console sales this generation.  And the next one. If the curse of the 3rd generation will still be actual then Microsoft will have a chance:P

So your talking about the X360 specifically, will it win? If so then I'm just going to say noooo...-_-. As a whole MS is kinda already the market leader if you look at the overall financials against Sony and Nintendo.

America IS the most important market for almost any consumer product. Google anything, chances are America buys far more of it than any other territory.

No console has ever won without dominance in Japan. America may buy more, but Japanese devs are definitely influenced by the support in their home country.

microsoft is owning RIGHT NOW

but with it's marketing strategies, count on this : it won't stand, at least not that way

microsoft's sells will really start to go down one time soon, because they keep making customers pay
"pay for 4 maps" "pay for 3 songs" "pay for vista and pay to play online"

they ask too much to the customers, they will kill themself

OBJECTION. The Atari 2600 "won" the second generation of video games without even entering the Japanese market.

Without Japan, no it cant. This is why the 360 will finish last this gen. While the other consoles get sales from all three regions the 360 will only have sales from two regions. The 360 can make up its Japan handicap if its get superb sales from the US and Europe, and right now that is not happening.

If America is the most important market, then why is it that the most popular and most important games generally are Japanese made ones like Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid? America is the least important market since the game development output for consoles compared to Japan is a lot smaller.  Also Japan has far more gamers per household then America does.

Ok lol I'm owned I don't think any console has one without dominating in America but I still think Japanese dev support influences greatly the worldwide sales of a console

It also influences who buys the consoles with the right game. The 360 isnt getting big franchise Japanese games like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid, which are extremely popular franchises on Sony platforms and will help sell consoles, hopefully by then Sony will drop the price of the PS3. While the 360 and PS3 share similar games like Assassins Creed, The Darkness, GTA4 and Devil May Cry, two of those games are most recognized on the Playstation platform more then most other games. GTA is to the Playstation as Mario is to Nintendo consoles, they are both flagship franchises that are well known and extremely popular around the world. Lemmings seem to think that everyone cares about Halo, when that is not true. Only American's and some European's care about Halo, the Asian market doesnt give a crap about Halo one bit, a lot of them care about StarCraft, World of WarCraft and Mario more.

I'm only talking about their gaming devision, Sony has other forms of income as well.

Financially Microsoft is still in the red in their gaming devision but they are doing well with 360

Honestly, when Gears of War was released, i thought that they would become the next market leader.  But, over 6 months later, it seems impossible.

They had the chance to really clinch the spot by maybe fixing the 360s and stopping with the defects, hardware/software failures, ect, things that have been plaguing the 360 from its launch.  Microsoft just didn't fix the problem.  People began associating the 360 with hardware failures, and couldn't trust the product.

Also, the lack of variety has set in.  The 360 is again becoming a shooter console.  RPGs are coming, but it really is too late.  When did the last JRPG come out on the 360?  Exactly, it was that crap RPG that was released last year.  There are too few family oriented titles.  Viva Pinata's terrible sales show that the userbase doesn't want family friendly titles, even though it heralded decent sales.  Not to mention there are almost 0 decent platformers and Action-RPGs (in the vein of Zelda).

Probably the biggest thing that could have pushed the 360 over the edge was a price drop.  If they got rid of the core and dropped the price of the premium, i'm sure many more people would have bought the machine.  But instead, they released ANOTHER 360: the Elite.  A completely unnecessary 360 with minimal upgrades.  Not only did this also have the same hardware problems as the previous 360, but it also prolonged the the life of the console being at $400.  M$ should have just released the 120HD and HDMI stuff separately.  Things that should have been included in the 360 but aren't, like WiFi and Internet browsing, also hurt it because it causes people to buy other items with it.

And finally, the extreme popularity of the Wii.  Noone could have predicted this, not even Nintendo themselves.  Instead of fighting the Wii, Microsoft just says that they "aren't competing with the Wii."  Yea, just take the easy route and say the Wii doesn't affect you at all.  Great one there.

So yea.  Call me whatever you want, i really don't care.  I'm speaking from experience.  I wanted a 360 a lot, A LOT.  But all of these reasons have stopped me.  Too high of a price, not enough variety of games, things that aren't included that would force me to buy additional items, hardware/software failures, ect.  Maybe this Winter, when that new chip is released and a (hopefully) price drop happens, i'll get one.  Maybe.Â
