Honestly, when Gears of War was released, i thought that they would become the next market leader. But, over 6 months later, it seems impossible.
They had the chance to really clinch the spot by maybe fixing the 360s and stopping with the defects, hardware/software failures, ect, things that have been plaguing the 360 from its launch. Microsoft just didn't fix the problem. People began associating the 360 with hardware failures, and couldn't trust the product.
Also, the lack of variety has set in. The 360 is again becoming a shooter console. RPGs are coming, but it really is too late. When did the last JRPG come out on the 360? Exactly, it was that crap RPG that was released last year. There are too few family oriented titles. Viva Pinata's terrible sales show that the userbase doesn't want family friendly titles, even though it heralded decent sales. Not to mention there are almost 0 decent platformers and Action-RPGs (in the vein of Zelda).
Probably the biggest thing that could have pushed the 360 over the edge was a price drop. If they got rid of the core and dropped the price of the premium, i'm sure many more people would have bought the machine. But instead, they released ANOTHER 360: the Elite. A completely unnecessary 360 with minimal upgrades. Not only did this also have the same hardware problems as the previous 360, but it also prolonged the the life of the console being at $400. M$ should have just released the 120HD and HDMI stuff separately. Things that should have been included in the 360 but aren't, like WiFi and Internet browsing, also hurt it because it causes people to buy other items with it.
And finally, the extreme popularity of the Wii. Noone could have predicted this, not even Nintendo themselves. Instead of fighting the Wii, Microsoft just says that they "aren't competing with the Wii." Yea, just take the easy route and say the Wii doesn't affect you at all. Great one there.
So yea. Call me whatever you want, i really don't care. I'm speaking from experience. I wanted a 360 a lot, A LOT. But all of these reasons have stopped me. Too high of a price, not enough variety of games, things that aren't included that would force me to buy additional items, hardware/software failures, ect. Maybe this Winter, when that new chip is released and a (hopefully) price drop happens, i'll get one. Maybe.Â
