I know I sound pretty stupid, but this stuff was hot when I was a toddler, and of course, I missed out on it. I've been looking some stuff up about it, and Duke seems like the archetypical video game badass, but can someone please just elaborate on it for me?

The original Duke Nukem was a revolutionary game at the time of its release, it offered unprecidented interactivity for a shooter and was really the first FPS to have an actual protaganist as apposed to just a floating head.

There's really not that much to explain, tbh. :P

He was the egotistical, sex-crazed, Evil Dead-quoting badass protagonist of a great mid-90s shooter. He's essentially a massive wad of 80s and 90s action movie heroes rolled into one, and that made a huge impact in a market where first-person shooter protagonists were usually silent or really dull.

Ill try to explain ^^

First off Id like to point out that I think that the Duke Nukem we refer to is from the DN3d game, before that he was alittle... flat (no pun intented, or wait, yeah it was).

Duke is basicly a caricature on the action movie protagonists from the 80's He is Dumb he cracks jokes about as much as he fires his guns (that says something) and he is a sexist, violent, chainsmoking a-hole, with all the wrong motives for doing the right things.

Back in the day the protagonists never really spoke in a shooter (therewere notalot of them) so when DN3D came out, it made gamers giggle like schoolgiels with all the bad movie-like oneliners he spewed, and the utterly violent ways to dispatch of enemies, also, that game had just about the most fun weapons ever in a videogame.

The point being that Duke Nukem 3D made just fun of itself (not taking itself too serious), having a light action movie tone, throw the gritty out of the window and have a bucketload of movie references (you actually DO meet the remains of the Terminator from Terminator 1)

Also: The Duke never makes threats, he only makes promises. So when he says "Im gonna rip your head off and **** down your neck". He really means it, and he WILL. (Note: best scene ever in a game)

Not really, Dark Forces had a real protagonist in 1995 and arguably even Wolf 3D did.

tbh in terms of humour and being a memorable character he's literally stuck. The man has his own meme, vent harrasment, legendary quotes and pretty much what i would say the yard stick for being a video game badass.

i myself never played it before but now after trying it on xbox live arcade imo it sucks. it similar to Doom. I think people like duke nukem coz of the badass main guy and majority of excitement for its sequel today is probably due to the long delays.

duke nukem is just about silly fun. but for most of us, its the nostalgia factor. duke nukem 3D was fun and obsurb and alot of us grew up with that. so, we hold onto it and will love forever no matter how bad it is.

If you ignore the fact that its really just an upgraded doom then sure, its "unique", maybe it was unique when it came out, but by no means is it unique now.

Quite frankly i could probably go out and find 10 games more unique at a game store than that game in less than 5 minutes.

the fact duke is one of the few characters with a personality that is funny, over the top and genuinely hillarious makes duke nukem great.Sure the original Duke 3d aint gonna hold up, and if you've never played it until now sure its not a great game, but still what makes that game is the humour, the puns, duke himself and the theme tune especially.

And people are excited cause an actual game hero is returning, not another faceless turd, unmemorable,or the hey im a regular joe like youlike we seem to be getting fed these weathers in action games, essentially Duke is what you could say..an old skool action hero.

Eh, the current polymer version looks better then that, and it's weapons mechanics (how they feel, how they sound) have ben refined to feel modern, full mouselook obviously, many tweaks, upgrades to the UI, HQ soundtracks, etc., etc.. It's basically like playing a 2007 shooter, but with Duke Nukem as the character.

You can find everything you need here. [click me]

But be warned, it requires quite a powerful computer to run it at all the potential & tweaks.

Also use this fantastic mod called Duke Nukem Attrition , it's a fantastic game with great level variety, & fantastic looking zones. You can level up your weapons, and many other things i forgot.

The community around DN3D is huge, so you'll have no problem finding online activity to play around.

Duke Nukem 3D introduced a lot of FPS "firsts":

  • The first FPS with a real, recognizable and identifiable lead protagonist (before that, FPS games featured generic military-type characters... Doom had an anonymous space marine, Wolfenstein had BJ Blaskowicz (sp?) who might as well have been anonymous).
  • The first FPS that took place in somewhat recognizeably realistic settings (before that, FPS games took place in repetitive, mazelike dungeons, completely unrealistic sci-fi bases or what not.) DN3D put you in movie theaters, strip clubs, submarine bases, places like that. DN3D was the first game to have doors that open in realistic fashion, or to have rooms above/below other rooms (Doom couldn't do that).
  • The first (and some would say only) FPS to feature deep interaction with the world. Light switches worked. Door key-code entry panels required you to look at each invidual button and press them (as opposed to bringing up some kind of special key-pad-entry UI.) Just about everything in the world could be used in some fashion. You could play pool at the in-world pool table, or take a whiz at a toilet, or flick some singles at a stripper, or even just admire yourself in a mirror ("Damn, I'm lookin' good!")
  • The first FPS with proper set-pieces and scripted sequences ("Those alien ******** are gonna pay for shooting up my ride!")
  • The first FPS to let you crouch, jump, fly and look up and down (IIRC... it might have been Heretic.)

It all added up to a truly revolutionary FPS back in 1996.

Dark Forces did a few of those first - looking up and down and having an identifiable protagonist, a year before.
