Microsoft is clearly trying to use the same tactics that Sony used to make the PS1 and PS2 succesful. For example, the PS2 had a one-year head start ahead of the competition, so did the 360. Secondly, the PS1 stole many exclusive games/seriesĀ from the N64, (look what happened to Final Fantasy series, etc). The Xbox 360 is also stealing exclusives from the PS3,Ā exactly what the PS1 did to N64. Thirdly, Microsoft is getting a vast RPG library, and we all know that RPGs are needed for a consoles success, take a look at how Japanese X360 sales went up when Blu Dragon was released. Just add Lost Oddyssey, and then Microsoft may finally gain foothold in Japan.

The PS2 sold about 11-13 million in its first 12 months, and the X360 sold about 10 million in a similar timeframe, which means it is very close to competing with PS2 sales. If the X360 sold good in Japan, that sales gap between X360 and PS2 would be even closer. When Halo 3 is released, it will make more 360s fly off the shelves, but lets hope that the 360 can sellĀ 80 million by the time its succssor comes out. With its awesome games coming up, I wouldn't be surprised it can almost reach PS1 or PS2 sales in half a decade. :)

The 360 while doing better than the original Xbox in Japan still isn't doing well enough to keep up with the PS2

It won't be anywhere near the PS1/2 sales without a) more (good)Ā games designed for the Japanese markets and b) somthing to kill the Wiis sales.

that would still more than double the sales of the original Xbox...not bad I guess but I really am still unsure if or when the PS3 will take over the 360

Could change in 2 years and after 1 or 2 price drops but I do not see any system selling as much as PS2.

Nintendo DS and Wii are selling faster than PS2. The DS sold 40 million in 2.5 years. I am sure Microsoft could compete :)

I don't really count handhelds as consoles...if we are talking about console sales...the Wii launched at a lower price point than the PS2, just something to think about...plus alot of nintendo fans were waiting on the GC and a fair amount of people had bought the DreamCast the year before...PS2's sales really started to pick up that 2nd holiday when the got MGS2 SoL and FFX amoung others then only continued to pick up steam as the other consoles faultered a little bit...Xbox1 only started to sell around 03-04

I dont' see the 360 ever hitting the 100 million sony claims they did with the ps2 in 5 years.

1. the 360 is averaging $100 increase in price from the ps2

2. the 360 won't break down on the levelĀ of ps2 forcing consumers to buy a second and third replacement that can be counted as a "sale" as sony did with the ps2.

PS1 and PS2 are waay too far infront to lose to 360 ...

Ā 100 mill PS1
Ā 112 mill PS2

Ā  10 mill 360 ...

Ā  Now since Microsoft claims that they are only manufacturing 12 million consoles as of 1st July 2007 and PS2 had sold over 21 million by the end of its second year -- i doubt Microsoft has the slightest chance in hell ( could they even manufacture 9 - 10 million consoles in 6 months let alone sell them ?!? )

well your second point while valid alot of PS2 owners did have to buy 2nd and 3rd consoles and I do truely believe that boosted sales (while not huge) but still significant amount...the 360 has to fix its hardware issues now if it wants to stay competitive

P.S. Pats >>> Colts

Difference is MS is doing more to at leastĀ repair and replace broken 360s (like extending the warranty) while after 90 days Sony support people basically laughed at you.

sony still REFUSES to release percentages of ps2 requiring replacement. They typically remain silent only when news is not good. One would think that it must have been a significant amount for the courts to become involved.

thats the reason I like the Xbox brand over the PS brand...MS honestly seems more intune with their customers...although 1800-4-My-Xbox is a pain in the butt sometimes, I circumvented them and I got my out of warranty 360 repaired for free and the added an xtra year(fro now) onto my warranty...IMO thats customer service

was it a stip of the suit that sony didn't have to release numbers?Ā  not sure i follow...

anyway, you have a point..we lost a lot of talent, but hey, noone is hardly more marketable than after a SB win.... free agency sucks... but oh well....

hey, if it makes you sleep better thinking you helped us that's okay. If i disagreed i'm afraid you'd cry like the rest of the Pats when we spanked them... :)

this year's gonna be tough..
