Wow its sad seeing people claiming to be elite gamers, hardcore gamers or any of that crap. They dont even know anything to do with games eitherway casual games are good for the industry people believe it or not.Developers like ubisoft need casual games such as just dance 2 to make big budget titles like assasins creed 3,zombie u,a new prince of persia, rayman origins, far cry 3.

Casual gamers are the majority without them buying consoles developers like sony would be in a much worse fininacial situation just like they are now.

We are seeing shops go into administration such as GAME who were recently saved to bad my shop closed down aswell as my local HMV.Developers wont get the money they need to make games if noone is buying them a small 2million people (people who claim to be hardcore) isnt enough.

If you dont like casual games/casual gamers to bad you have to live with it.

Also games like

assasins creed

pokemon

Call of duty

Are great (well call of duty isnt).Dont like it dont buy it i guess.

In b4 people start hating me for my lack of research.

There's nothing wrong with games being accessible, but I do think it's important for games to offer something for more experienced players especially when it comes to multiplayer games where a formerly novice gamer may become an experienced player during the course of playing the same game. Mario Galaxy 2 is a good example of a game that doesn't cut corners just for the sake of accessibility, well designed games should be enjoyable and satisfying for both newb and veteran gamers alike: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkroLroovM8&hd=1&t=2m41s

So I guess you'll be fine if the next Zelda game is extremely shallow and easy (not that Zelda games are the pinnacle of hardcore and deep anyway) and holds your hand throughout the whole game and encourages a cinematic experience, all for the sake of appealing to a 'wider audience'. Right?

I don't see anything wrong with casual games either. If someone enjoys their FarmVille or their Just Dance 2, then by all means they should play it.

I think the problem people have is when developers dumb down games that are meant to appeal to hardcore gamers in order to make it easier on the average gamer. Hardcore gamers want a challenge and therefore they get mad, they want to be given a challenge, not have their hands held.

I think both kinds of games are fine, but they should not mix. Hard games for the hardcore, casual for the casuals.

theres nothing wrong with casual games, i enjoy some of them, what people hate is when games which were orignally tougher and more hardcore have thier sequels dumbed down to appeal to casuals and thus losing their appeal to the original audience in the 1st place, eg. simcity 4 to simcity and other games.

The question I have then is, if the "hardcore" games couldn't sustain themselves (as you imply when you say, that casual games are needed in order for hardcore games to be developed) and "casual" games would sell enough to not only sustain themselves, but also to subsidize the development of "hardcore" games, how long do you think it would take before developers and publishers would abandon the development of "hardcore" games and would focus on supposedly much more profitable "casual" games?

He isn't trolling. He actually has a point. More people play casual games.MikeMoose

But that's not his main point. His main point is that "casual" games are actually needed for "hardcore" games to be developed (because profits from their sales are supposedly used to subsidize the development of HC games) and hence indirectly useful for "hardcore" games / gamers.

And yes, such claim would require some research to back it up - not so much in terms of which type of games is more profitable, but whether the money from "casual" games are indeed used for "hardcore" games and whether some HC games are not cancelled / delayed because of studios / publishers switching to "casual" market.

Im just sick and tired of some people who claim to be more important then others by giving themselves the term "hardcore gamer" if anything they are also casual. They think the world revolves around them and that every game should be how they like it.They bash casual games when there are plenty of good casual games. They also claim to have superior intellect compared to casual gamers when they to are dumber and cant accept opinions.I used to act like this but its really stupid.

Without casuals gaming wouldnt be as popular especially since it has some negativity in the media.

id consider hardcore gamers those who purchase lots of titles for their consoles , and those are objectiveley more important for the companies than some casual guy who gets just a few games during the console lifecycle id say gaming is not popular because of casual players , imo its more like casual players are the result of gaming being popular , whithout those hardcore gamers it maybe wouldnt even exist in that form as it is today

Not sure if replying to me or not. :) But, I am curious about your point anyway: What kind of games?

More "casual" games? I don't think that "HC" gamers would care much about those. To the contrary, should they (casual games) become more prominent at the expense of "HC" games, they would be mad actually. More "hardcre" games (as well)? If so, I would love to see the justification of business strategy behind it - let's make more "hardcore" games because we have enough money from "casual" market already... Yeah no, that doesn't sound very realistic now does it?

What matters to me is how much resources is put into games and hardware that I want. Now casuals do bring in a lot of money, but they also pull resources away from things I like. It's hard to know which one of these effects that is the strongest. If I would guess I believe casuals are overall good.

We should give a damn because it negatively affects the industry, look at the damage it has already done... the industry is saturated with FPSs... I know it's fun, I've played every single CoD since MW and I enjoyed them, but I made sure to never buy them (I borrowed them from my bro gamer friends rofl).

You know...if core gamers would buy their games more often instead of you know, publishers would see no reason to dumb down games for the casuals. But you know, since core gamers don't buy their games as often....publishers and developers have no choice but to try to please the casual audience.

Nope, skyrocketing developement costs, crippling recessions and poor buisness decisions have had bigger effects this gen. Those have exaccerbated the trend of copy what the market leader does.

In a few ways we have a stronger industry than ever.

I wish people would stop using these stupid labels. Everyone is a casual gamer, it is a hobby. How can you be hardcore gaming exactly? What does that entail? That I play 40 hours a week? Sorry I have a job and college starts soon. I don't have the time to game 40 hours, and if I did I would probably have other things to take care of, like friends or meeting women or something else.

I love games, I love gaming, it has the potential to be the greatest art form and I love how it challenges me. I have been gaming since I was like 3. However I cannot fit into what a "hardcore gamer" entails. I don't think anyone really could either. In my book there are only gamers, I just happen to be a gaming affecinado, but they are still gamers too.

And lol at saying COD sucks. You play COD, you buy COD, just look at gamertags. All COD haters on here are huge hypocrites. COD is great, I don't see why people pretend to hate it on here so much. Stop trying to be cool on the internet.

if only that were the case. now they are shifting focus on these markets....a bet they are going to regret. you cant focus and depend on non gamers to make you money. its not like they are going out of their way to give the core gamers more of what they like. Perfect example is ffxiii which is becoming a trilogy when the fans are clamouring for versus xiii. what if they redistributed their resources to make sure that versus gets completed? i know its a bit more complicated than that, but thats the reality of the industry, because game budgets are soo high, a lot of them are being influenced by it. yea companies need to recoup...but i think their focus on making as much money in the casual market doesn't tanslate into anything really significant in the core market. you have to be viable to everyone, but i think the video game market is putting all their nuts in one basket depending of which basket is making the most money....
