Just look @ what the wii has done , even ex-sony employee phil harrison knows that theres a huge market for casual gamers though his japanese counterparts did not listen to him and nintendo is reaping the benefits .

-lets face it , the day will come that us hardcore gamers will be the minority in the world of gaming ,this day is sooner than we all think

Hardcore gamers (if there's any real definition) are the minority of gamers, and logically will be forever.

as long as I get my games I'll be fine, but if they dumb down everything for the casual gamer then they can go to hell

I think this only effects consoles. PC's already have a huge casual base and we still see a bunch of "hardcore" games still being made.

Don't really mind casual games as long as they're not crap and there are still games with deep and involving storylines.

We're allready the minority. It's a good thing we're such a dedicated and valuable section of the market cos if we weren't this industry would be over-run with casual games

Not all casual games are shovelware even though most of them are.

Yea I can think of a number of great casual games which are just as much fun if not more so than hardcore games. Tis just a pity that there are so many cash-ins which give casual-gaming a bad name.

You're saying we're not a minority already? You're saying that companies like EA haven't been catering to the casual market for years already? You're saying that with games like Spider Solitaire, Bejewelled, and Miniclip games that the PC hasn't already been completely over-run with casuals?

Hardcore have always been a minority, and until recently, one held in contempt as anti-social nerds. If anything, gaming is becoming more accepted. Games like (Insert Sport Here)(Insert Year Here) have been selling excellently for years now, and the hardcore Hermits are still given plenty of games that they can really sink their teeth into.

I'd say you're making a mountain out of a mole-hill, but even saying that there was a mole hill to start with would be an exageration.

Same with consoles.

Just because there will always be a large majority of casuals it doesn't mean the hardcore games won't still be made. We've had a majority of casuals since PS1 and it hasn't really affected the number of hardcore games (not to say casual games aren't fun).

Wii-fit has already sold over a million, and I dont think it has been released in the US or Europe yet.

The fact that Nintendo took the majority of E3 last year to talk about Wii-fit, should show that there is a strong possibility that consoles will begin to focus more on casuals, and non gamers next gen.

Can someone clarify the definition of a casual here?

I dont play games much as I have to balance work with college and all that, maybe 5-10 hours a week with an interesting title. I own a fairly high end PC, PS3, Wii and I used to have a 360. After my terms of service with the US Army ended, I sold my 360 to a friend stationed at my fort so I wouldnt have to lug it around with me at the airport. I figured I'll buy a new one when they fix hardware issues. Also, when it comes to games, I dont go for any shovelware crap either, my more recent purchase was Crysis and R&C.

So whats really the defining line that seperates a casual from a hardcore gamer, what would I be considered as?

I keep seeing these terms being thrown around but as I go from topic to topic the definition seems to vary and morph.

I think gamers are all the same, difference being each individual having different tastes in games...

I've been into gaming since 7 yrs (am 27 now) but that doesn't mean I am a hardcore gamer... I've been spending hours online playing COD4, Fifa08, Unreal III, Resistance, DMC 4 lately, which one might mark them as games for Hardcore gamers.

But what if someone enjoys Wii Sports, Wii Fit, brain age etc etc or other curious and innovative games, and spends hours playing them... Doesn't that mean he is a hardcore gamer too...

Wii is not selling more because it targeted the casual gamer market, but because of great marketing skills, an innovative controler & a cheaper priced console...

Well, Halo 3 sold 8 million at launch? Or was it more?
