Sony has revealed its "surprise" over Microsoft's casual launch line-up for Kinect.

Microsoft unveiled Kinect at E3 last month with a wealth of Wii-esque titles, including Kinectimals, Kinect Sports and Joyride.

Sony worldwide studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told the August issue of Edge magazine that he respected Microsoft's strength with FPS games.

However, he said he was bemused by its family-friendly approach with its new motion sensing peripheral.

"In practical purposes, those are Microsoft's strengths - they have very strong FPSes, for example," he said, "and they work with Activision to provide content for Call Of Duty.

"It's very interesting to see them confirm where they have those strengths by opening [their E3 presentation] with those games.

"When they showed Kinect I was surprised to see so much on the casual side. It was a polarised kind of approach."

Yoshida said that Sony's approach was more widespread. "We are not focusing on one area, or two areas, but covering a full audience spectrum," he added.

really... at what point did MS ever give the impression that this was for the hardcore. you only need to look at last years E3 concept video to see this was going to be aimed at the family.

Inb4 "Arrogance! Last place!" etc. etc.

Yoshida's right though, there was a pretty stark contrast between the first 25 minutes of Microsoft's E3 and the remain 50.

well people just thought it was going to be amazing technology wise, like playing an FPS like that movie Gamer and other concepts... it won't live up to anything like that. this commecial shows a fighting game that looks awesome and a skateboard game, both look hardcore. people were thinking back in 2009 that there were going to be games like this

well if they were expecting a product aimed at the hardcore market after the E309 concept video then the were idiots. this was always going to be aimed at the family market to try and take a chuck of the wiifit crowd.

Everyone was surprised and they sucked big time, at least when Nintendo did all of this it was original. They're relying on core gamers encouraging their families to buy this thing but after E3 I'll be telling them to avoid this piece of crap.

well in SW in was hyped like the next big thing in gaiming, tons of core games way more hyped than move a lot.... and MS PR are hyping it like a "device that will herald a new new era in the world of interactive entertainment"

I remember last year when this thing was revealed all the MS fanboys were saying how great this thing would be, this would be way better than the Wii, more hardcore, etc. On SW, this thing WAS hyped to be the peripheral that changed everything. Now? I mean, c'mon 150 bucks plus 60 bucks to jump around like a tiger? 150 bucks so you can flail your arms around to "control" the menu on your xbox? 150 bucks so you can "walk around" your car in Forza? I have a ton of disposable income but even I'm not going to spend money on this thing to take up shelf space.

I like how Move will support games such as Time Crisis and Resident Evil 5. Games that core gamers will enjoy and are practical to use. If pointer controls become standard for FPS's on consoles, the 360; known for it's FPS games, will find themselves behind the times.

Why are people surprised by this? Nowadays, Motion-Sensing games are always targetted for the casual audience.

Were people really expecting Gears of War on the Kinect?

Kinect has no controller so, I am very interested to see the "hardcore" games that will be made for Kinect especially how in the hell will they implement online with it because let's be real X-Box Live is one of the 360's major selling points.

i've never really believed it was for anything but a group of friends acting like idiots in front of a tv. theres no way to really navigate 3d without a controller, unless they did something with black and white, if you've ever paid attention to the hand you could see playing that game with hand gestures

in retrospect it should have been predicted. Kinect is too alien to be used as an alternate control method for regular games and it will be too niche to command the big budgets for game production that more hardcore games need. The software for Kinect was called "wii-esque"? Well yes. None of the wii's great games though and only its shovelware

At least until it dawns on everyone how little it can be implemented in anything besides party games. But then again, maybe that's all most gamers (casuals) want nowadays. *sigh*

I think it was indeed pretty surprising that what took up 95% of Microsoft's E3 press conference was shovelware. Apart from the obvious announcements, they had NOTHING else to show. I mean here they are with a new interesting piece of tech and all they've got to show for it is family games ripped straight off the Wii. I doubt many Non Gamers watch E3 if at all.

It's clear that MS is trying to fool casuals into thinking that Kinect is better than it really is. They even had a few prerecorded demos there(hand in Forza Kinect demo moved before the person moved theirs).

I like m$ idea. They announced hardcore titles: *halo reach *gears of war 3 *cod:black ops *codename:kingdom etc. For regular controller to show they're not droping off core player while introducing kinect to attract more cassual gamers to the xbox family. Reasonably no hardcore player will want to use any motion controller for fps because the motion controller players will not stand a chance against regular controller players. Thanks m$ i love playing my halo & gears with my controller.

When Natal was first introduced, the whole point/purpose was the idea that a controller is a barrier to some people trying gaming.

The point of going controller free was supposedly to remove this barrier. By definition that means appealing to the non-core crowd.

No one who actually listened to MS and thought about it is/was surprised.

Sony was not surprised. Sony's fake surprise allows their executives to differentiate the Sony approach from the MS approach.

SUD123456

When Natal was introduced it was touted as a revolutionary new interface - the future of gaming - with a bunch of "Final product may differ" in fine print recorded videos and Peter Molyneux pretending he had cracked natural language processing.

Even now it's touted as revolutionary, when its entire software line up basically consists of minigame compilations, fitness software and dance games. It can't be used while sitting, it can't distinguish between voices, it can't scan objects, it can't support more than two players.

It's not surprising that after all this hype, one would be surprised by how little it delivered.

I'd honestly believe that Sony was surprised, at least by the E3 presentation, because Microsoft's marketing approach is so piss poor. From the business-analysis perspective it doesn't make sense to be late to the market on motion controls, do it with a system not dedicated to just doing that aspect well, and to do it with an audience in mind that has already bought into competing products. - It's the Zune all over again. And just like the Zune, there's another "craze" coming (3DS, mobile gaming, etc...) and another market (apps) already in the works / working that Microsoft has ignored. Cool subscription service "bro", check out this iTunes though... flash forward, we're there again. - So yeah, Sony might legitimately be surprised. Were I a Sony analyst, this is NOT the path I'd be worried about. Microsoft basically just revealed a crap hand before going all-in, of all the strategies they could have gone with that would have seriously threatened Sony's growth, this one has the least chance of resolving.

Not that I care particularly about the System War, but didn't Sony have the EyeToy *twice* (PS2, PS3) before Microsoft announced Kinect? And you are aware the EyeToy wasn't the first camera / motion system, right? This technology was in arcades in the early 1990s... I played a fighting a game routinely at the arcade in the mid-90s that used motion capture controls, that was 15+ years ago, so let's not call bull when there is none to call, alright?

Sony isn't surprised by Kinect, they're surprised Microsoft just conceded their best market in favor of targeting an audience they have failed with multiple times in the past two generations. Odd, to say the least, and certainly not financially savvy. Then again, Microsoft's traditional role in targeting Apple / Nintendo's market has been to offer up their own neck with the dotted line already drawn, holding a little sign that says "cut here for free candy".

How could people even think that about a non-controller device...boggles me. Did people really think there would be hardcore games with kinect? The thing uses no controllers! Not even a motion controller. How could it function to a level to handle any hardcore game? It's a casual-fest.
