Nope. If its just a cinematic trailer thats fine but most devs just say "real time" when they really mean prerendered CGI running on powerful PC's. Ex: Quantum break
CGI/Live action trailers are awesome. Better than gameplay trailers most of the time. mems_1224how about both?
Don't cry little cow im sure ps4 will get a game that looks as good in 2016 :)Nope. If its just a cinematic trailer thats fine but most devs just say "real time" when they really mean prerendered CGI running on powerful PC's. Ex: Quantum break

I honestly don't care.
What they do for me is they set the mood and tone for the game and what the game will basically be about. For example: Wolfenstein: The New Order trailer (just off the top of my head) shows I'll be fighting robots in the new Wolfenstein game or GTA V trailer showcases the city, certain things that I will probably be able to do within that city, and set up the main characters that we will be playing as in this new iteration. They're just, for the most part, cool looking trailers that give you very barebones information on the game (and I must emphasize barebones); of course sometimes they don't even do that like the Dead Island trailer.
Still, I don't get people's probelm with them. If you're smart then you'd know to just wait for when we start getting more information on the game like actual ingame footage and whatnot and if not then fine; pre-order based off of a CGI trailer. What you do and how you operate is not any of my concern and that's your choice. I prefer to wait for reviews and gameplay footage to see whether or not I'dperhaps fancy the game, but, agian, that's totally up to the individual consumer on what product he buys and the reasons behind that purchase.
If it's a debut trailer or a teaser it's fine. But showing CG a few months before the game launches *cough*Watch Dogs*cough* is just dumb
CG trailers are good for introducing a game and the overall impression it's trying to give. After that it should all be in engine
To be fair, that Watch Dogs trailer was pretty sweet. If it's a debut trailer or a teaser it's fine. But showing CG a few months before the game launches *cough*Watch Dogs*cough* is just dumb

It was some impressive CG but it was pointless
I don't care for them. Â All they do is waste developers time/budget while showing me nothing significant about the product.

Except, you know, what the game will be about and the vibe that they're going for (most of the time).
I cant say I've seen many CGI trailers that give me a good idea for the game. Â Target renders sure, but that's a bit different. Â They're trying to show a representation of what they hope the final product will be.
If I don't see some sort of gameplay I'm not really interested. Â And when the visuals are far beyond what the game could possibly ever be then whats the point? Â Its pretty much just "hey, look at what this CG team did, pretty cool huh?"... Â often times these trailers arent even developed by the studio making the game.
I'm sure there are examples to support either side of the argument, but more often than not I find these trailers to be a waste.

I disagree completely but fine. Whatever, I wont argue, I'd be hitting my head against a wall for the next hour or so if I did except it wouldn't be as entertaining.

Yeah thats cool man, obviously its up to opinion. Â
Some people get more hyped over CGI trailers and cutscenes than anything else. Â This past E3 is proof of that. Â Good looking games that show plenty of gameplay get swept under the rug and forgotten about while people are losing their shit over cutscenes with not a hint of gameplay footoge. Â
I'm not trying to speak for everyone or act like I'm absolutely right. Â Just stating my opinion and giving my reasons.
To be quite honest, I love well-crafted Live Action trailers for a game, even if it barely reflects how the game is going to look or play.
Which is strange because if the trailer was for a standalone movie, with no ties to a game at all, I'd probably consider it shit/cheesy/tacky/cheap. But as soon as I know that it's promoting a video game, it appeals to me :?
Examples: The Alan Wake: Bright Falls series, any Halo trailer, the Sleeping Dogs trailer (:o)
If they give some kind of accurate portrayal of how the game feels, then yes. Trailers are about advertising the game, and CGI is perfect for that provided that there's also gameplay trailers available.Â
Some of my favourite trailers are CGI, such as Arkham City and Assassin's Creed II.
FF7 started it... not with the intention of fooling people because everybody knew the PS1 would never produce those graphics. Only this gen things started to get murky....
I hope all future trailers are gameplay trailers, things are very confusing now with terms like in-engine and in-game. Even in-game now doesnt mean it will be close to the final product (TLoU cutscenes were created in-game, but being rendered by 8 ps3 at the same time...)

I enjoy a good CGI trailer/intro for games. They are good for building excitment and laying the foundation for a new game, people just have to remember that it is not in game footage.
Blizzard do some fantastic CGI (not really sure if it can be described as CGI though) stuff, they really should get into doing a movie or two. Relic have also done some fantastic intros for the Dawn of War series.
Halo Reach and Gears of War have good intro's/trailers as well.
At the moment though you can't beat this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrQ0qMRZ_1Q&feature=player_embedded
and the reason you can't beat it, is because not only is not CGI, it's 100% in game resources from a game that's still well over 1 1/2 years from launch and at least 4 months from modular Alpha.
I love CGI Trailers. Don't really care what game they belong too, just as long as they're fun to watch.
I am not stupid enough to believe CGI as game play, so I'm cool with them.dramaybazMost people aren't that stupid. That's sort of the whole point. Everyone knows that CGI trailers don't show a damn thing about the actual game. So by the time a game is about to be released, CGI trailers are pretty pointless. They're not gonna help convince someone to buy the game, because they know that such trailers don't represent the game. If anything, I imagine it would make someone LESS interested in the game because relying on CGI trailers at such a late stage potentially makes it look like the company lacks confidence about the actual game.

Honestly, a good CGI Trailer DOES help hype a game, especially if it beings to a well known franchise. I guarantee that if Ubisoft were to release gameplay footage of Assassin's Creed 5 it would be less attractive for casual gamers (which I'd assume is the majority of the new market) than a CGI trailer. Or rather, A CGI trailer would help sales more than gameplay footage, if the gameplay were not released until the actual game released. But I'm talking about real gameplay. Ubisoft normally uses altered footage/pre rendered/different engine gameplay in their demos, which is a far more reliable solution for promotion than a CGI Trailer. For example the Far Cry 3 E3 demo was completely different from the actual game. The CGI Trailers probably showed more helpful information (or more honest information) than the demo did.
Never saw the Sleeping Dogs one, that was awesome. To be quite honest, I love well-crafted Live Action trailers for a game, even if it barely reflects how the game is going to look or play.

I like both.
I like CGI trailers because they are prettier and kind of like a mini movie, but I also like in game gameplay trailers because it shows the actual gameplay itself off and gives you an idea of how the game plays.
I dont put much stock in either though because time and time again developers have given us both kinds and the final product turned out to be nothing like either one. So when I see something anymore I have a hard time letting myself get excited about it.
Yeah, this industry is getting more dishonest every year to the customer. At demonstrations you rarely hear or see anything that's 100% representative of the final product. They just want it to look as appealing as possible, so they either cherry pick one of the best "areas" in a game or enhance the graphics while playing it on a PC (assuming it's a console game) and the people who watch it will obviously be amazed. The worst part is that nobody seems to care.I like both.

CGI trailers are liked and disliked for different reasons, for some they are action packed, kick ass viewing experiences. But for others, they have nothing to do with the final product and therefore are a waste of time. One example of a great CGI trailer(Dead Island): http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lZqrG1bdGtg I was amazed at this trailer when it first came out, and it made me so excited for Dead Island. Then when the game came out I was dissapointed in the complete desolate shell of a story. The plot was far from the heart wrenching, emotional journey that the trailer enticed. Even though the game was good, the CGI trailer left me uterly dissapointed in the final product. And that's the problem with CGI trailers for me, they give these amazing interpretations of what a game could be, but they always fall short. So what do you think? Do you like CGI trailers, or are you just annoyed by them?Granny_Spanked
I had exactly the same CGI trailer in mind when I read the title.
That Dead Island trailer was amazing but it had absolutely NOTHING to do with the final game.
I have nothing against great CGI trailers but they often are a cause for disappointment when I finally get to play the game.
As long as devs don't spin it as being what you'll see in-game, I'm cool with them. And say what you will, but all of the Assassin's Creed CGI trailers are badass as all hell.
I personally enjoy them. Even if the game drastically changes concepts before it is released, it makes me keep an eye on the game (if the trailer is interesting)
Anyone who doesn't demand video game trailers to show actual gameplay is an imbecile and the fact that they can cross a street or operate a toilet is nothing short of a miracle.Â
