The bottom line is - I was robbed of my laptop a few days ago, and waiting for insurance is long and boring, and I've just been awarded a £200 Amazon voucher, so I thought I'd reward myself with a console of my own (I've never owned one - been a PC or Laptop warrior for some time now) I've not really got the money, but I'm planning to make the most of this voucher. SO, it's a straight toss up between a Xbox or a PS3. The options are a 250GB or a 4GB Xbox 360, or a 12GB PS3 (you can find them on Amazon if you fancy a gander.) There's various bundles, such as a 250GB Xbox + FIFA14 for £170 or the PS3 12GB for £149 (Apparently you can add FIFA14 for £5? Didn't work for me..) I've played on an Xbox mainly through the past two years at Uni, apart from my laptop, and had a go with a PS3 a few times.. Xbox battery, paying for Xbox Live and not having blu-ray are the only drawbacks I see (someone could help me know a bit more on gameplay and games price selection), whilst the PS3 has chargable controllers, free online play, blu ray but my concern is whether 12GB is enough for a sporadic gamer.. I'm used to Xbox, and have nothing against PS3 but what other things I should consider when weighing up my options. Any feedback or help would be appreciated, but bear in mind I don't really want to exceed the £200 - so I thought I'd turn to this forum! Many thanks in advance.

At this point get the PS3.  Free online, some good exclusives and a BR player.

Only reason to get the 360 would be for the better controller and better selection of racing games.

Any comment on 12GB being enough? At this point, I'm not sure how often I'd play..

PS3 would be better at this point but I would warn you that many PS3 games have forced installs (some of which can be 5GB) so 12GB harddrive probably won't be enough. Depends on what games you buy and if they need to be installed.

Off the top of my head, I'll play sports games, i.e. madden, fifa, nhl as well as sort of fantasy games and maybe some shooters - skyrim might be ambitious, assassins creed, maybe gta (i'm aware of the 8GB install on GTA..) - would attaching a USB or a card work? Or don't PS3's allow this? And is the same for Xbox (if I went for hte 4GB model)

Save up and buy a 250GB or 500GB PS3. 12GB isn't enough space. PS3 has much better exclusives and variety then 360 so, I wouldn't recommend buying a 360.

the 12 gig is a joke.

you are going to spend all your time uninstalling and reinstalling games.

a ps3 with 12 gig will hold 2 games on it depending on the games and maybe not even 2.

gta 5 alone would take up 8 gig of it.

As far as I know you can attach USB sticks and drives to PS3 but I'm not sure how well they work for installing games.

Yeah not mentioning the fact that its likely closer to 9GB with the way things work. My 80GB PS3 is about 73GB or so.

You could always go for it and get a harddrive later as I believe someone else was saying. PS3 = Upgradeable storage.

sony should be embarrassed they released that garbage just to meet a price point.

it is obvious the people they are aiming a 12 gig ps3 at have no clue they can swap out the hdd so what they are doing is selling a 95% useless ps3 to a bunch of people that don't know any better.

MS are gods for releasing their 4GB console though, right?

Simply look at the good exclusives these systems have:

Xbox 360

  • Gears of War 2 & 3
  • Halo 3, ODST, Reach & 4
  • Forza Motorsport 4 & Horizon
  • Project Gotham Racing 4
  • Crackdown 1 & 2
  • Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
  • Kameo: Elements of Power
  • Lost Odyssey
  • Tales of Vesperia

PS3

  • Uncharted 1, 2 & 3
  • Little BigPlanet 2
  • The Last of Us
  • Yakuza 3 & 4
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • God of War 3
  • Killzone 2 & 3
  • Demon's Souls
  • Heavy Rain
  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
  • Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2

And decide. Obviously there are more exclusive to name.

or loved PGR, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Fable and the ton of other exclusives on the XBox.

His choice should be about games obviously. So whichever franchise he enjoys the most, go with that system.
