Civilization series heads to consoles

This could very well be a groundbreaking announcement for strategy fans on all platforms, or at least for fans of Sid Meier. It's just been announced that the Civilization series will be taking a step into new territory in the form of Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution, which will be made for the console and handheld platforms.

Firaxis Games will be developing Civilization Revolution, with 2K Games taking care of publishing the title.

If you're wondering what's going to be new with this game, look out:

Some of the key features that will resonate with fans of strategy games and the Civilization franchise include 16 civilizations to master and lead to victory, an array of famous historical leaders to play as or compete against, and accessible maps and streamlined time scale for quicker games, intense combat, and constant action. In online multiplayer mode, players will compete for world conquest and glory among their peers as they battle in teams, head-to-head or epic free-for-all matches.

In addition, auto-matching, ranked games, leaderboards, achievements, downloadable extra content and integrated video and voice chat make the online play more versatile and fun than any previous version of Civilization and will allow players to see where they stand against the competition. Finally, the position of ruler of the world can be settled online.

No word on where the game will be made playable, but there's a good chance we'll be seeing it on all the consoles. We'll have more on this when we hear of it. In the meantime, let us know how you think Civilization should be handled on the platform of your liking.

It's obvious how it would work on consoles. The wii would have the useful pointer, and the others would have better graphics and online

Since its turnbased it should work out fine, although the controls might be a little unwieldy.

This is welcome news. 2K Games is getting serious and bringing a premier franchise to the console world. And they're not being half-assed. Looks like it's going to be available for quite a few platforms, console and handheld. Hopefully it will translate well.

As far as the console versions it may be just for the PS3 and 360. Not the Wii.

I thought Sid Meier's Pirates ported very well to the Xbox and PSP so I have high hopes for this Firaxis port as well.

Prepare for an experience nothing like the original Civilization. I'm going to be frank here, I don't think console players would enjoy the same kind of experience that the original Civs offer. They are too time consuming.

GunSmith1_basic

It could be great on the DS. The dual screens can be great for that type of game. The top screen being the map, the bottom is the city/unit/terrain info. It would be great to play Civ while on the go.

Not sure about the consoles.

You're right, CIV would make one heck of a roadtrip game.

Gamespot says the learning curve for Civilization IV is '1 and 1/2 hours'.

And this was in the 'Bad' section. '

  • Warning: The highly addictive gameplay will make you lose sleep.

And this is not Civilization's first time on consoles...

I'm not sure if you'er agreeing or disagreeing? That shows that console gamers generally don't like to put the ammount of effort in and time into games as PC games. Thats why the learning curve was put in the bad section.

Even on the PC Civilization has taken a new road, there won't be another Civilization like Civ II. Not that its all bad seeing how great Civ IV is.

that's actually a good idea (although I think you got the screens mixed up- sorry to nit pick). It would of course have to be a ground up title and might be very different from other civilization games in the series.

Wrong the only thing that the ps3 and 360 would have is graphics. Online gaming is starting late this summer on the Wii so by the time this is out , if it is on the Wii, it would be online.

My science teacher is a big fan of this franchise. HE really needs to get a 360. He has a small daughter like 3-4 years old and in a couple of years she might start playing viva pinata .

more on that ds idea. It could use the dual screens pretty interestingly. The touch screen could obviously be the map with the units and cities on it. The top screen could be the city screen, as well as the advisors screen and tax and science etc. screens. But civilization is basically a game of windows, how about you get to assign windows to either screen? So you could have the map screen on the top or bottom, but would obviously bring it to the bottom to move things around. Both screens could be map screens if you wanted, with the ability to send units from on screen to the otherone instead of scrolling to the place. And of course, you could have both screens be advisor screens or have a help screen next to the tax screen or whateverif you dont know what you're doing. (although in doing so you might have to be able to assign the dpad as well)

Faster games? Am I the only one who loves the Marathon speed in CivIV because it's SLOWER? I mean, this game deals with TIME. You don't want to sit down and be done in an hour. At least, that's not Civ to me. A good Civ game can take MONTHS.

Do some read it? It looks like its being built ground up for consules. Meaning its not going to be hurting your PC version. Its seperate.

As its Take Two now...Quality

Firaxis is a great developer. I really loved Railroads! and am currently playing CivCity: Rome. It's no Caesar IV but I kind of like it.

Whatever. They should bring Master of Magic or Age of Wonders to consoles. No need to dumb those down.
