Playstation 1 - Launched in Dec.94 in Japan and Sept.95 in the USA - 100.52 Million units shipped

The controller featured 2 triggers on right and left sides - became the Dual Analog with joysticks - later became the Dual Shock with rumble feature. The console used a memory card for saving game data and ran with the CD format. Homebrew became quite popular with the PS1 - it included mod-chips that took advantage of burned games and region code bypassing. The PS1 evolved into the smaller and more affordable PSone.

The 15 games I would consider important (in no particular order) - Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Wipeout XL, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Gran Turismo, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Silent Hill, Resident Evil 2, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears, Philosoma, Chrono Cross, and PaRappa the Rapper.

(I loved this game actually.)

Playstation 2 - Launched in Mar.2000 in Japan and Oct.2000 in the USA - 113(+) Million units shipped

Same controller design with the addition of pressure sensitive buttons (MGS2). The console used an upgraded memory card, played CDs and DVDs, and had an HDD addon (FFXI). The console was also backwards compatible with the previous PS1 games, memory card, and controller. The PS2 evolved into a slimmer and more affordable version of itself.

The 15 games I would consider important (in no particular order) - God of War, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Zone of The Enders 2, Gran Turismo 3, Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill 3, SOCOM, Tony Hawk 3, Grand Theft Auto 3, Okami, ICO, Twisted Metal Black, Devil May Cry, and Guitar Hero.

What do you think?

PS2 because you can play those PS1 games on the PS2. But I thought during it's time the PS1 was better. I still don't like the PS2 much.

both we're great... but i'd have to give the ps2 the edge. many more games i thought that we're better on the ps2-- it had so many great games i could go on forever. kingdom hearts 1 & 2 sealed the deal for me... becuz those two we're exceptional RPGs but chrono cross is one of my favorites perhapos one of the best games EVER

PS2, b/c it plays PSX games anyway.

I remember getting the PS2 at launch, all I played on it were PSX games until Ring of Red and Shadow Destiny came out.

PS1, you cant argue with some of the great games it had, which really paved the way for the PS2.

Final Fantasy 6-9, Tactics, Metal Gear Solid, Twisted Metal, Resident Evil, Tony Hawk, Crash Bandicoot, Gran Trusimo, Silent Hill and Spyro. Franchises like those are memorable and continue on now, after more then 10 years.

You also left out a whole lot of the PS1 library.

Suikoden 1 and 2

Die Hard Trilogy

Colony Wars

Treasures of the Deep

Syphon Filter

Bushido Blade

PS2 is better imo. The only things that will ever be worth playing later on PS1 are MGS, SOTN, and the RPGs.

Retro wars?? HA. More like... A couple years ago wars....

The PSX had tons of great games.... all the OG REs and Twisted Metals, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro... But PS2 had GTAIII, Twisted Metal Black, Dynasty Warriors...

Not sure :D

EDIT

Ohhhh METAL GEAR!!! Metal Gear Solid 2 was fantastic, but Solid was also great.... agghhh....

PS2 easily.

Pretty much the PS1...If you really favored RPGs. Then it is better.

But overall PS2 really was far more impressive.

For it's time, PS1. Although ps2 is better by todays standards, PS1 had Tekken 3, Spyro, Croc, Crash Bandicoot, Urban Chaos and WipeOut.

PS2 for me since it gave me my favourite series ever, GTA.

PS1 was awesome though, and still holds my favourite game to date: FFVII.

PS2. Had both, PS is a legend but PS2 absolutely blows it away.

OP, how could you leave out Twisted Metal 2 for PS and put in Legacy of Kain? And what about Battle Arena Toshinden? That game rocked.

XL83

Vae victus!

Or whatever the hell Kain said :P  - yes, I loved all of those games you mentioned but I just had to list the 15 most important to me and trust that it was not an easy task. Both consoles, PS1 and PS2 have like 50 amazing games each, but I just had to choose the 15 that were reall special to me.

So far, I have 4 unopened first/second generation NA PS1s, 1 unopened JP PS1, 2 unopened first generation PS2s (with the crappy disc drive I'm afraid). I also have "brand new" controllers and memory cards for each and I've started to collect unopened PS1 games and PS2 games too.

Some day, these consoles and their games might be a nice piece of gaming history... I hope :P

Some neat things I've collected are -

Unopened copy of FF7 EB Games bundle with Bradygames Strat Guide and coupons for a 24 pack of Pepsi with FF7 characters on it.

Unopened copy of MGS1.

Unopened copy of PaRappa/Lammy duo pack with PJ Berry cell-phone adapter (JP).

Unopened first gen PS1 bundle (black box with big red E on it) with demo disc (X-games, Wipeout1, Battle Arena Toshinden 1, Warhawk, etc).

And lots more but forgot about it hahaha! None it is for sale... yet ; ; hopefully never.

PS2 easily, PS1 was driven by JRPG's, PS2 had a much better library in terms of varation it had games like SOTC, God of War, ICO, Okami, Devil May Cry and it had the best Racing games, the best platformers(N64 was the console for platformers back then) the best action games and the best sports games.

PS2 is the greatest console ever made. I dont care what anyone says, if there is any game machine that compare to the PS2, it is either PS1 or the original Gameboy.

Don't forget about Tomb Raider,  Resident evil, and Crash Bandicoot on PS1 and Final Fantasy X on PS2!  I'd say both systems.  Man, that is a tough one.  Maybe PS2 has the edge because it's more recent.

Wow, I just remembered the N64 vs PS1 "system war". Going out with my buds playing Perfect Dark and then playing FF7 when I got back home at night. Good times ^^
