Playstation 1 - Launched in Dec.94 in Japan and Sept.95 in the USA - 100.52 Million units shipped
The controller featured 2 triggers on right and left sides - became the Dual Analog with joysticks - later became the Dual Shock with rumble feature. The console used a memory card for saving game data and ran with the CD format. Homebrew became quite popular with the PS1 - it included mod-chips that took advantage of burned games and region code bypassing. The PS1 evolved into the smaller and more affordable PSone.
The 15 games I would consider important (in no particular order) - Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Wipeout XL, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Gran Turismo, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Silent Hill, Resident Evil 2, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears, Philosoma, Chrono Cross, and PaRappa the Rapper.
(I loved this game actually.)

Same controller design with the addition of pressure sensitive buttons (MGS2). The console used an upgraded memory card, played CDs and DVDs, and had an HDD addon (FFXI). The console was also backwards compatible with the previous PS1 games, memory card, and controller. The PS2 evolved into a slimmer and more affordable version of itself.
The 15 games I would consider important (in no particular order) - God of War, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Zone of The Enders 2, Gran Turismo 3, Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill 3, SOCOM, Tony Hawk 3, Grand Theft Auto 3, Okami, ICO, Twisted Metal Black, Devil May Cry, and Guitar Hero.
