Cliff Bleszinski has said time and time again that he really loves Heavy Rain. The developer has gone as far as to say Heavy Rain has created a new genre. But there are certain elements in the game he thinks could have been down better.

Especially the way the children in the game act, according to Bleszinski, David Cage and his Quantic Dream team didn't do enough to avoid the "uncanny valley".

"Yes, it really grows on me," he said when asked by Gamereactor if he was enjoying Heavy Rain. "But, even if I feel it's a really good game, I don't think they have done enough to avoid the "uncanny valley" problems. The children in the game are some of the most hideous I have seen. Ever."

Besides Fahrenheit which is developed by QD also you'll be hard pressed to find a game developed before Fahrenheit similar to Heavy Rain.

He is right, though. The characters in his games are deliberately exaggerated in order to avoid the uncanny valley effect. Heavy Rain, whilst it wouldnt suit distorted faces, had some problems with overcoming the effect.

Some of the models were repulsive, and some of the things on screen were just uncomfortable to watch.

I agree, but not only the children. that game is a miserable imitation of a movie, while I think that games should just stay games. shaking the fruit juice with your joypad.. :S unexpressive people, the characters looked all retarded. but of course you CAN'T transform reality into a videogame, it's just NOT possible, it's data, not some sort of life that lives in a bluray disc.

I don't know you guys, but I have like zero interest in wannabe movies, I'd rather enjoy myself a real movie then. I don't understand this hysterical pursue to turn games into something that wants to replicate the reality, life, which is characterized by infinitesimal events and casualties that will never ever be imitated in a videogame, as it's simply impossible. No wonder that we see lots of flaws in games like Heavy Rain then, because we automatically compare reality with that part of the game that is trying to show us something "realistic", hence we see all the defects.

When people tell me that games should become like movies, I say NO, I can be an old-fashioned gamer, but I don't want games to lose their main role of videogames.

If anyone else had said this, no one would have cared, but since Young Clifford is on "the other side" and therefore must be launching an attack on HR, plus the fact that everyone hates him, this is now an issue.

Whilst I am often inclined to agree with your sentiment, I have played Heavy Rain and see it as something of an exception. Hollywood Blockbuster games are one thing, but Heavy Rain is a completely different beast entirely. It is born not just out of movies, but also out of pick-your-own-adventure novels, text based adventure games and point-and-click games. It does well to marry together linear narrative in a videogame setting, something which most games fail at. Everything in Heavy Rain made sense - most of the time, narrative runs contrary to gameplay. As long as it remains a balanced genre, there is no harm in games like Heavy Rain existing.

apropos of photorealism.. there's an interesting article that every gamer should read

I think the following is a good point:

"Imagine you were to look at a painting of a person. You know it's not real, hence there are various errors that might subconsciously bother you, even though you wouldn't have noticed them if those same apparent errors were edited into a photo. You might not be able to pinpoint what's wrong with it, but instinctively your mind noticed something wasn't right. Video game worlds are by their very nature artificial. There's all sorts of factors that we would normally not be bothered by that will simply feel wrong when seen in a video game. A very clean hallway will look unfinished and a perfectly straight edge will look like it lacks detail."

I suppose that's why many games are kinda cartoony these days. I think it's difficult when you aim for a realistic artstyle, you can't make single character too stylized or it will stick out from the rest of the game, but the technology isn't there to render humans naturally either, so you end up with a freak.

What does Gears's and Heavy Rain's characters have anything to do with eachother? Do you guys even know what the uncanny valley means? Heavy Rain is supposed to be as realistic as possible, whilst Gears is definitely not.

He's right, they are awful. It's not just how they look, but the voice acting as well. They act and sound like robots. Extremely stupid robots. That Jason kid earned a Darwin Award in that game. His death wasn't tragic, and it didn't affect me in any way except to make me rage at how incredibly dumb he was. Honestly, I thought he actually had it coming. Hell, by the end of the opening tutorial sequence section, I wanted to kill him myself.

He's never really tried, to my knowledge. Most of the games Epic makes have characters that have deliberately exaggerated unrealistic features. But even then, I never looked into the eyes of any character in Gears of War and felt like I was staring into the cold soulless eyes of the anti-Christ, as I did when look at the kids in Heavy Rain.
