Cliffy B's response to Guitar Hero's fall (which makes a good point for all IP).

From his Twitter (although shown on other sites such as CVG)

"You can have an IP that you lovingly care for and release every so often that can last forever, or one you ride hard into the ground."

You know, Cliff does have a point and I don't think this quote not only applies to just Activision here. This quote can also applies to EVERY other company that keeps an IP with a lot of games.

Thoughts?

He's pretty much spot on. They've milked those games to hell and back and now nobody cares for them. I just wish that would happen to the CoD and WoW franchise. I wish Activision would crash and burn.

COD is next. It's all activision has now. When they start releasing 2 every year maybe the masses will get fed up.

Very True! I believe Nintendo is a great example of that. They dont ruin their franchises by releasing games once a year for them. We get the occasional Zelda or Mario game. That remain high quality and are a treat to people when they are released.

Sports games dont count lol

Games shouldn't release yearly aside from maybe sports games but even still there is a better way of handling them. Even Assassin Creed 2 and Brotherhood was a little too much for me. I still really enjoyed both of them, but the idea of playing a 3rd one this Fall isnn't too appealing. Publishers just seem to want their money ASAP and are putting quantity over quality

Disagree, with the exception to the NES there has only been one true Mario game for each console, which works in Cliff's first point. Pokemon on the other hand is just a phenomenon, I'm not sure how its worked out as well as it has. Even thought I love the games. :P

There isn't a new Pokemon every year and Mario does have a game released every year, but they all feel different. Every Guitar Hero is EXACTLY the same as the previous. There's absolutely no reason to spend another $60 on a game which has worse songs than the previous version.

Mario and Pokemon hardly have yearly launches that change nothing from the previous entry. Mario Galaxy to Galaxy 2, A lot more polish, various new gameplay ideas and Yoshi Pokemon R/S/E to Pokemon D/P/Pl, Tons of new monsters, huge updates to the metagame, new world to explore. hell D/P/Pl to HG/SS saw a huge improvement in user interface Either of those examples is leaps and bounds ahead of the "Innovation" from GH5 to Warriors of Rock

After the collapse of the CoD franchise Acti will have nothing left for cash cows. The only three game to ever make Acti tons of money were Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero and CoD. None of their other franchise really preformed well yeah some were successful but not in terms of what these three made. Blizzard needs to sever ties and go on their own again. Acti and its mismanagement are a sicking ship that only now is starting to show signs of stress and wear after years of bad decisions. Bobby's arrogance will be the death of Acti. If I was a shareholder I would be extremely weary of how the business is being run right now. Yeah their still making money right now. But doesn't everyone feel that they have no real plans for longevity as a company???

The next AC will probably have Ezio join the Spanish Conquestators and ravage a Mayan village and change their calenders to have the world in in 2015 so Ubisoft can still crank out a few more games :P

This man speaks the truth. Activision have sadly become like this, they haven't squeezed most franchises as hard as they did with Guitar Hero (they released what, 4 or 5 games in one year in 2009) but it wouldn't surprise me if they started doing it soon, especially with CoD.

The've already said they were heading in this direction. Remember the rumors of a TPS CoD, I don't think its hard to imagine two CoD releases a year one being a FPS the other a TPS. Not only that but it's only a matter of time before they start creating different teirs for online game play.

The problem wasn't that they released a new GH every year the problem was they released the same game, with the same graphics, and basically charged you sixty dollars for new songs. With little reason to update what else did they expect from consumers? To shell out the same amount of cash for just a new list of songs? I skipped GH3 and purchased World Tour and that was my last GH game. I'm glad that it's dead. COD is next.

It's quite funny actually because they saturated the market themselves. There were only two major players, Rock Band, Guitar Hero. All the other insignificant crappy rip offs weren't hurting anybody, but then for some reason they managed to self implode.

Well, to be honest, I would have thought that Call of Duty would have hit the ground first, but with the way they made them GH games, its PATHETIC. I said basically the same thing, Thanks activision, for not knowing how to keep a game strong without over saturating the market. No one bought the GH games because no one wanted to pay another 50 dollars for another 5 hour experience. One they get that figured.... you know what. I hope acti hits the ground harder than GH. THAT would be funny.

I hope now that Rock Band is the only band game on the market, they'll have more success since the customer base will be consolidated. I think that as long as Rock Band doesn't have any more wannabes nipping at its heels, they'll be able to maintain a steady franchise that has healthy, only occasional releases. As Cliffy B said, you can love and care for a franchise with only occasional releases and it will last forever, but if you pound it into the dirt until no-one wants it anymore.

Luckily, that incorrect opinion is in the minority. You do realize that the series from Guitar Hero 3 onward was the leftover scraps from the franchise Harmonix created, right?

Give it a few years and the'll reboot the series so they can start to milk the franchise all over again. I'm worried what fate will be fall NeverSoft??? They were forced to spend all their time on GH when Acti removed them from the series they created Tony Hawk. Are they going to be forced in to developing CoD game's now??? Maybe after Acti kills of CoD they'll can bring back all their dead milked franchise into one super mutated game and create a completely new genre, Call of Tony the Guitar Hero's pro skating duty and then milk that to death for five more years!!!

I'd say majority of people enjoy Guitar Hero, maybe not here though, Rock Band just feels awful to play, the guitar is terrible, and the song selection is bad.

There is a reason why Nintendo still has their core franchises still around
