What red-blooded American male has never wanted to pick up a lightsaber and go at it?! LOL

When Wii announced this game I was stoked. This is really the ultimate game for a Wii-Mote. Isn't this what they promised? Didn't they release a promo video of the Wii before its launch with quick shots of several different people playing baseball, platformers, conducting music, and all the exciting styles available with a Wii-Mote?

Star Wars Jedi Knight on the PC is a blast. (Haven't played Xbox versions) If you're even a distant fan of the Star Wars movies you would have loved fighting lightsaber battles and using your force powers.

But somehow.... this game has managed to flop miserably.

  • 6.5 review score
  • It uses animated versions of classic Star Wars characters instead of realistic HD graphics. Yes, I know Clone Wars is a cartoon, but this is the epitome of Wii. Instead of gritty realistic HD graphics, cartoony teh kiddy graphics substitute.
  • Lightsaber controls are crummy. Movement not what you would think. Not intuitive. How can you screw up a basic sword battle with a few force powers? It doesnt' get any easier. Just more proof of how much the Wii-Mote has not lived up to its promises.
  • No advanced combo moves. Very simple formulas. Again, this is what the Wii loves to develop for its audience.
  • Even Gamespot admits this game is geared towards a younger audience. Very G rated. Very teh kiddy.
  • No suitable online play. Again, Wii has screwed up while Xbox and PS3 have rapidly improved their online gaming services.

This game was the perfect formula for success. The constraints replaced by what nintendo wants to do with its Wii killed this game. And will kill many, many games while Xbox and PS3 continue to deliver what gamers really want.

.....oh dear, I knew this would happen. There is no way a lightsaber game would do well on the wii. Especially, since it will get tiring after a while, the gfx will suck, and the gameplay will be sloppy.

 I remember when people said games like this will do good on the wii, even games like Okami where better on the PS2. So you see folks games like Star Wars which require some finess to the lightsaber wielding  will look stupid and gimmicky on the wii.

flop... was it even hyped???

This is aimed for a younger gamer read the reviews?!?!?!?

Lucasarts have become casualised company(well err not as good as they once were).... The DarkForces/Jedi Knight are miles better than the feeble Force Unleashed(liked the story mind you) They are no where near what they doing in the 90's e.g Monkey Island Series, Loom, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Full Throttle, The Dig, Grim Fandago, Dark Forces e.t.c

The Clone Wars aminated cartoon is aimed at a younger audience hence why the game is ?!?!?!?

Yes I agree with you the Wii-Mote has not lived to hype... but that is not the Wii Mote's fault as Zack and Wiki, MOH Heroes2, MP3 have excellent controls... lazy dev's maybe?????

Wii was supposed to be the FPS console of this gen. It was also supposed to have a sleu of 1 to 1 sword fighting games and this mythological star wars light saber game. Talk about epic fail.

If you recall the promise of a light saber duel game then you would understand why these attempts are so dissapointing. Just another broken promise on the Wii.

1. Sales will = more third party development.

2. Nintendo will create brand new IPs

3. Returning favorites will be "enhanced" by the Wii's remote

4. FPS on the Wii is where it's at!

5. Lightsaber Duel games for all!

6. Wii will have games to play in the fall of 2008

Sigh.

Wii took advantage of the imagination of people!

We all heard about how the Wiimote would be before it came out and we all imagined something about how cool it was going to be, but it's just not quite what we all imagined i guess.

You do know it is based off of a cartoon for kids. Even the cartoon is kiddy the only thing they would have done by making the game gritty was make it look nothing like the cartoon that the game is based on. Which is yes a G rated cartoon for kids.

Man some people try to find ownage everywhere

2. wii sports, wii play, disaster, excite truck, wii music, wii fit, rotohex, cubello, orbient and so on.. (and a lot new IP comming 2009)

3. Zelda TP, Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Pikmin 1 and 2 Remake, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid Prime 1 and 2 Remake, Donkey Kong Jungle beat remake, mario tennis remake

4. yep MP3 is the best FPS i played this gen.. too bad that most of the western developers are playing it safe with the 360

5. Wario Ware Shake, De blob, Shaun White, Chocobos Dungeon, Tales of Symphonia 2, hopefully Dead Creatures, World of Goo, Wii Music, Animal Crossing CF, Desaster Day of Crisis

people always say how the 360 has the most amazing lineup and the wii sucks but its all fanboy talk.. i think both platforms have unique games and both platforms have their shortcommings...

outside of shooters and racers (arguably RPGs) the 360 lineup is pretty dull... the wii of course does not have a lot of FPS games but is brilliant at point and click adventures, platformers and adventure games..

the first half of 2008 was not so strong for the 360 and strong for the wii.. the second half is looking better for the 360 .. and both look to have a great 2009 lineup

i dont see how any platform has failed anything.. (saleswise of course the 360 totally failed in europe and japan though)

excite truck..? are you kidding me.. its a wonderful game.. i still play it a lot with my friends.. cant say that to PGR3 which got a lot of great reviews because of the shiny graphics but in the core is very flawed (especially the atrocious loading times,,, ugh..)

wii music is a great game too if you are actually into music.. if you only like rock songs it wont attract you but i like the focus on harmony of this game and not rythm alone...

so yeah.. i think both are unique games that you wont get in other platforms.. too bad there is no excite truck 2 comming soon

Was that actually promised by  nintendo, or did media and fans hype that?  seriously, i'm interested to know as i cannot remember.  Anyways, it's not fair to say that it's a broken promise(if it was promised) given that the wii is only just now turning 2 years old.  It's lifespan is not run yet.  Though you could say you're disapointed that a 1 to 1 lightsaber game isn't out yet.  The real disapointement imo is the lack of developers interest in the wii.  The best the wii can get is this for a lightsaber game and a cheap poorly done multiplat of a poor game(from the star wars universe).. hardly first rate A team efforts.

Broken promises aren't exclusive to the Wii.  Where was halo to counter the ps3's launch?  What about the entire ps3 launch itself?  Perhaps you think the wii has underdelivered the most on it's promises though.. fair enough.  I'm just making sure we're not saying this isn't common practice.  Oh, but don't get me wrong.  It's not excusable; it's just that all companies are arses, and not just nintendo.

Outside of gamespots review, didn't alot of other people(reviwers and gamers) find excite truck to be very enjoyable?

In the video I mention in the original thread, there is also a person swinging a sword battling someone. Wii was advertisd as everything. And one of them was the first console that allowed you to fight melee games with your motion sensor controller instead of the a-typical controller. Phail.

And Lair and Too Human are examples of why the 360 and PS3 failed

No. One dev misusing or not using a console's whole potential doesn't mean a console has failed.

I loved the old Star Wars fighter on the PS1. I forget the long name right now. I never understood why there was so much hate they even had Mara Jade in the game. Which being the Star Wars fan I am, I feel in love with that.

If you recall the promise of a light saber duel game then you would understand why these attempts are so dissapointing. Just another broken promise on the Wii.

1. Sales will = more third party development. wii has more exclusive third party games 99% of it is crap. What are you bragging about again? excluding the shovel ware, theres a large amount of good third parties coming out in 2009 on the wii, the third party exclusives is growing more and more. unlike xbox and ps3, the wii doesnt have to share a large list of third party games. this in the end are deciding factors as to why you will want to own a second console next to your wii.

2. Nintendo will create brand new IPs Nintendo already prove to have new ip's in the works That's nice unfortunately I cannot play "good intentions". Last I checked thats not yet available on the Wii. well a lot of ps3 games and xbox 360 games arent out for them, yet that doesnt stop cows and lemmings from hyping them, or letting it be known they exsist.

3. Returning favorites will be "enhanced" by the Wii's remote the wii still does first person shooting better than both xbox 360 and ps3, its been proven and reported by many sourcesAnd yet this genre is dead on the Wii. Funny. the genre is dead on the wii? world at war just came out, the condiet is coming.

theres other unannounced first person shooters coming for it. for the genre to be dead, then the system should not have anything on the harizon.

4. FPS on the Wii is where it's at! no one claimedthat, but a lot of people perfer it over the dual analog set up

why dont you read reviews of metroid prime corruption, hell even read reviews of metal of honor heroes. its been claimed from reviewers. if you wanna do better than that, then actually play these games yourself.

5. Lightsaber Duel games for all! a true light saber game hasn't arrived yet, but if one does, its going to use the wii motion +More empty promises.

why dont you watch the youtube tech demo of wii motion +. this might actually help you understand why it can bring to the table of lightsaber games, or sword play games.

6. Wii will have games to play in the fall of 2008 wii does have games to play this fall 2008, unless youre one of them people that likes to nitpic and look for the same kind of generic first person shooter, killing spree game, thats poluting the market now.

if you love those kinds of games, why dont you try a recent wii game, that came out. why dont you try de blob. this is one of these wii games, that came out and got good reviews, and went under the radar by gamers.

Sigh.

Bread_or_Decide
you flaim with no awareness of what the wii is about, for someone who claim to own one.

you can do better than that. for someone who own a wii, you really dont seem to do research on it. it seems like you own it, to bash it. you cant bash something, you own. that only shows how intelligent you are.

Wii was supposed to be the FPS console of this gen.Bread_or_Decide

lol remember in the very first promo video for the Wii there was this guy playing Metroid and hiding and jumping behind his couch...

You won't be able to win this argument though, because once again sheep are playing the "we are the only ones who know what gaming and the Wii are about".

Yeah 'cause bashing something you don't own is a lot smarter. Duh uh.

1 to 1 lightsaber game on the Wii was promised. Didn't happen. Just another broken promise on the Wii.

I'll just LOLZ at the list of games you mentioned. You pretty must just pwn yourself mentioning Excite Truck and Wii Music as good games.

The__MCP

Phail.

i seriously dont remember any of these 'advertisements' that you speak of...

I remember how sheep were bragging how the controls would be so revolutionary and so innovative that gameplay would fundamentally be changed forever. I also remember how they bragged that they could beable to wield a lightsaber and swords and stuff...

Funny how it all never actually happened.

It's amazing how even something as fool proof as a lightsaber game on Wii can get botched up. 1:1 controls for Wii are looking more and more like a pipe dream, so long as developers keep botching things up. And the fact that this is tied to that POS new Clone Wars cartoon doesn't help, I'm sure.

Well that did happen, but the cows didn't show the arrogence that the sheep did with their whole "innovative" argument. They were dead set that the 360 and PS3 would fail horribly because the Wii would compleltely change how we play games.

Also so you know, only a small amount of cows believed that whole 2x 1080p at 120fps crap that Sony was saying. They knew that wasn't going to happen but they had good reason to believe that the PS3 would be by far the most powerful console. That never did happen however...

Oh,okay, one game caused the Wii to fail.Because clearly,it's impossible for another developer to make a proper,high-quality lightsaber game.

i would think the Wii IS innovative, the motion-sensing and IR pointing parts specifically. they may not have been implemented well on alot of games, but it is a relatively new approach to gaming.

people always say how the 360 has the most amazing lineup and the wii sucks but its all fanboy talk.. i think both platforms have unique games and both platforms have their shortcommings...

outside of shooters and racers (arguably RPGs) the 360 lineup is pretty dull... the wii of course does not have a lot of FPS games but is brilliant at point and click adventures, platformers and adventure games..

the first half of 2008 was not so strong for the 360 and strong for the wii.. the second half is looking better for the 360 .. and both look to have a great 2009 lineup

i dont see how any platform has failed anything.. (saleswise of course the 360 totally failed in europe and japan though)

The__MCP

HD? Lol. just tells how much your logic is flawed.

its basically a hand-held mouse equivelant with a joy-pod in the form of the nunchuck. one you get past the whole "OMG i can wve it about and do things like lighsabre and stuff wow!!!" stage you begin to realise you can't do that much particulally new with it that wii sports hasn't already shown you. we get it you can play golf with it but in terms of every other trype of game a KM+M or controler is as good or even preferable (see SSBB)
